Atlanta, GA 4K (DJI Mavic Air 2 Footage) Downtown & Midtown / Buckhead - Cool Aerial Shots !!

Atlanta, Georgia is the capital of the state of Georgia and is the 37th most populous city in the United States with a little less than 507,000 residents. Atlanta is situated among the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and has the highest elevation of any major city east of the Mississippi River.
Atlanta or what some refer as The City in the Forest is part of the 9th largest metropolitan area in the nation with more than 6 million residents in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Atlanta is also the county seat of the county of Fulton County but the city extends into Dekalb County.

Atlanta was first named Terminus. Later it was named Thrasherville. Then in 1842 - when Thrasherville had 6 buildings and 30 residents - the residents renamed the city Marthasville in honor of Governor Wilson Lumpkin's daughter. Later John Edgar Thompson, Chief Engineer of the Georgia Railroad suggested that the city be renamed Atlanta. Atlanta was named because it represented the Atlantic in the Western & Atlantic Railroad. The residents approved the name and the town was incorporated in 1847.

The Gate City or Hollywood of the South was founded as the terminus of a major state sponsored railroad in 1837. The city was almost burnt completely down during the civil war. But it rose up quickly and now has become one of the 50 largest cities in the United States. Atlanta ranks in the top 20 among the world and 10th in the United States with a gross domestic product of $385 billion.

Sage Creek Campground in the Pryor Mountains

Nestled at the base of the north side of the Pryor Mountains, along the Montana and Wyoming border, Sage Creek Campground is the only campground in these mountains. It's a small 12 spot campground with difficult access. But it is in a prime location, and has the beautiful Sage Creek running right through it.

Check out this site for more details on the campground:

Sage Creek campground - Pryor Mountains, Montana

We took Jack on his first camping trip and he did great!

I (Shane) had always wanted to check out the Pryor mountains, because it's such an interesting looking range from Carbon County. I was glad that we were able to take some time and get up into the high country.

It was really much more lush than I had expected it to be. A lot of that area is in the rain shadow of the Beartooth Mountains - the highest mountains in Montana, and so there is a lot of dry land out there. Well, Sage Creek campground did not disappoint!

While we were up there, we checked out this big ice cave called... Big Ice Cave, lol.

Thanks for checking out the video. Let us know if you have suggestions for areas around Montana that you would like to see us feature here on Adventures of Shane and Laura!

Exploring Backroads of Montana's Pryor Mountains: Big Ice Cave, Wildflowers, Chief Plenty Coups SP

Come along for a drive through the backroads of Montana's Pryor Mountains! We're taking the back way from Billings and heading to the Big Ice Cave via Pryor Gap Road.

You'll see why we download Google maps for offline use whenever we are heading into off-grid country like this for exploring. This is one of the best hacks we've ever discovered. It is really nice to be able to pull up a GPS satellite image of where you are at any time... especially when the road turns out to not be where you expected!

Along the way, we do a little exploring, as always. ????Montana is amazing during in June / early July. The wildflowers are going absolutely nuts! This doesn't last long. Soon the drought of summer is going to set in so we soak up all this color while we can. We also stop off at Chief Plenty Coups State Park for a little side trip. On days like today, it is more about the journey than the destination.

Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic SIte

Today, the Arcadia Valley in Iron County is a peaceful setting in one of Missouri’s most scenic areas. But in September 1864, the valley was the scene of one of the largest and most hard-fought battles waged on the state’s soil—the Battle of Pilot Knob. During the battle, Confederate Maj. Gen. Sterling Price led an army of 8,000 men against the Union post of Fort Davidson at Pilot Knob.

Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site preserves Fort Davidson and the battlefield where so many Confederate and Union soldiers lost their lives. A visitor center and museum interprets the conflict with exhibits, audiovisual presentations and a fiber optics diorama of the battle. The site’s playground, picnic area and hiking trail provide relaxing ways to spend the afternoon.

Montana Moments: Bear Canyon Trail- Pryor Mountains

The Pryors are filled with trails for hiking, UTV/ATV use, and even horseback riding. Bear Canyon is one of these trails. Just 2.7 miles down Helt Road and you'll find Bear Canyon Route 1014. This hike is full of breathtaking views. Remember to take lots of water with you when you hike, especially during the hotter months of the year.

Mouth of the Canyon Trail

The Mouth of the Canyon Trail in Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area is easily accessible from the B Loop of Horseshoe Bend Campground. This trail offers views of the canyon and the Recreation Area's gravity fed water system, as well as opportunities to see Pryor Mountain wild horses. Mouth of the Canyon is listed as a moderate, 1.8 mile round trip hike.

Pryor Mountain Wild Horses & Bighorn Recreation Area.

A day trip through the Bighorn Recreation Area in Northern Wyoming just outside of Lovell, Wyoming. We were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the Pryor wild Horses and a few Bighorn sheep. The walk through the Two Eagles Interpretive Trail was informative. There are more than 140 stones that were used by tribal families to hold down Tipi edges.
If you are in Wyoming this is a must see.

map of Montana

Montana is a state in the Mountain West subregion of the Western United States. It is bordered by Idaho to the west; North Dakota and South Dakota to the east; Wyoming to the south; and by the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan to the north. It is the fourth-largest state by area, the seventh-least populous state, and the third-least densely populated state. Its state capital is Helena. The western half of Montana contains numerous mountain ranges, while the eastern half is characterized by western prairie terrain and badlands, with smaller mountain ranges found throughout the state. In all, 77 named ranges are part of the Rocky Mountains.

Montana has no official nickname but several unofficial ones, most notably Big Sky Country, The Treasure State, Land of the Shining Mountains, and The Last Best Place. The economy is primarily based on agriculture, including ranching and cereal grain farming. Other significant economic resources include oil, gas, coal, mining, and lumber. The health care, service, and government sectors are also significant to the state's economy. Montana's fastest-growing sector is tourism; nearly 13 million annual tourists visit Glacier National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Beartooth Highway, Flathead Lake, Big Sky Resort, and other attractions. mapa de Montana Montana is one of the eight Mountain States, located in the north of the region known as the Western United States. It borders North Dakota and South Dakota to the east. Wyoming is to the south, Idaho is to the west and southwest, and the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan are to the north, making it the only state to border three Canadian provinces.

With an area of 147,040 square miles (380,800 km2), Montana is slightly larger than Japan. It is the fourth-largest state in the United States after Alaska, Texas, and California,[75] and the largest landlocked state.

Topography

Relief map of Montana
The state's topography is roughly defined by the Continental Divide, which splits Most of Montana's hundred or more named mountain ranges are in the state's western half, most of which is geologically and geographically part of the northern Rocky Mountains. The Absaroka and Beartooth ranges in the state's south-central part are technically part of the Central Rocky Mountains. The Rocky Mountain Front is a significant feature in the state's north-central portion, and isolated island ranges that interrupt the prairie landscape common in the central and eastern parts of the state. About 60 percent of the state is prairie, part of the northern Great Plains.

The Bitterroot Mountains—one of the longest continuous ranges in the Rocky Mountain chain from Alaska to Mexico—along with smaller ranges, including the Coeur d'Alene Mountains and the Cabinet Mountains, divide the state from Idaho. The southern third of the Bitterroot range blends into the Continental Divide. Other major mountain ranges west of the divide include the Cabinet Mountains, the Anaconda Range, the Missions, the Garnet Range, the Sapphire Mountains, and the Flint Creek Range The divide's northern section, where the mountains rapidly give way to prairie, is part of the Rocky Mountain Front. The front is most pronounced in the Lewis Range, located primarily in Glacier National Park. Due to the configuration of mountain ranges in Glacier National Park, the Northern Divide (which begins in Alaska's Seward Peninsula) crosses this region and turns east in Montana at Triple Divide Peak. It causes the Waterton River, Belly, and Saint Mary rivers to flow north into Alberta, Canada. There they join the Saskatchewan River, which ultimately empties into Hudson Bay.

East of the divide, several roughly parallel ranges cover the state's southern part, including the Gravelly Range, Madison Range, Gallatin Range, Absaroka Mountains, and Beartooth Mountains.[92] The Beartooth Plateau is the largest continuous land mass over 10,000 feet (3,000 m) high in the continental United States. It contains the state's highest point, Granite Peak, 12,799 feet (3,901 m) high. North of these ranges are the Big Belt Mountains, Bridger Mountains, Tobacco Roots, and several island ranges, including the Crazy Mountains and Little Belt Mountains.

Between many mountain ranges are several rich river valleys. The Big Hole Valley, Bitterroot Valley,[96] Gallatin Valley, Flathead Valley, and Paradise Valley

East and north of this transition zone are the expansive and sparsely populated Northern Plains, with tableland prairies, smaller island mountain ranges, and badlands. The isolated island ranges east of the Divide include the Bear Paw Mountains, Bull Mountains,[ Castle Mountains, Crazy Mountains, Highwood Mountains, Judith Mountains, Little Belt Mountains Little Rocky Mountains, the Pryor Mountains,

Crooked-Creek Rd- Bighorn Canyon (The Pryor Mountain Story) [Ride Along Time-Lapse]

“The Land God Forgot” – Bessie Tillett of Crooked Creek, Montana
The Strong and Tillett families have influenced much of the history of the Pryor Mountains. Bessie Strong Tillett (born November, 1889) and Edna Strong Anderson (July, 1885) came with their parents to the Lovell area in 1894. Their parents opened the successful Strong Hotel and Saloon in Lovell. Frank was also involved in the building of the first irrigation canals in the Lovell area. “In 1903, the Strongs bought the Hugh Kelsey ranch and two others on Crooked Creek.” [1] A few years later, the whole Strong family moved to Crooked Creek to live.
Frank Strong also had contracts with the government to carry the mail to the Dryhead, Crooked Creek and Kane area. Edna carried the mail by horseback for a number of years. Bessie also carried the mail on and off between 1905-1910.
Around 1902, Frank Strong and others were involved in a shooting spree near Medicine Creek (previously known as Davis Creek) in the Dryhead country. It all got started when Frank Strong decided to have the Ewing boys run some of his cattle in the Dryhead. Link Hannen and Marry Mogan, Dryhead ranchers, did not take much to what they considered encroachment of “their” range. So Hannen and Mogan rimrocked 28 of Strong’s cattle in the Big Horn River! Hearing of this, Frank Strong, Lee Ewing and Ed Morse headed toward Hannen’s ranch near Medicine Creek to even the score. A shootout occurred and Ed Morse was slightly wounded. Frank Strong, thinking Morse was dead, and Ewing nowhere to be seen, “got the terrible feeling that he was facing Hannen and his henchmen alone, so he ran for the nearest horse and vacated the area as fast as possible. As the story goes, Hugh Kelsey is supposed to have seen Frank riding toward town and started after him to give him a letter mail. Frank, thinking that he was being pursued by Hannen, nearly killed his horse getting away.” After the shootout, Hannen became paranoid over the fact that maybe Strong and his men would return. So Hannen stayed indoors for a good while. When he had to venture from his cabin to get water, he would disguise himself in his wife's clothes in order not to get shot at.
Bessie Tillett said no one was arrested for rimrocking her father’s cattle. She remembers Hannen being arrested many times in his life, but he was never convicted.
Around the same, time, Edna strong married her first of three husbands, Jim Kelsey. Not too long after, Hugh Kelsey, who had come back to Crooked Creek around the time of the Strong –Hannen incident, asked his brother to hide him from the law. Hugh had been arrested in Livingston, Montana, for cattle rustling, but had jumped bail. Hugh, as mentioned in the Sage Creek chapter, had been involved earlier in cattle rustling around Crooked Creek. Years later, it was reported that cowhides were found in the roof of Hugh Kelsey’s barn! Anyway, Jim hid Hugh down at Frank Sykes’ place, then Edna took Hugh on her horse to Kane to catch the train to escape from the law. As the story goes, Edna complained bitterly about Hugh, because his suitcase wore the hide off her horse! Later, Hugh Kelsey made his way to Canada, “and established a ranch on the Peace River”.
After the turn of the century, most men in the northern Wyoming area did not wear guns, unless they were riding the open range or expecting trouble. Frank Sykes, however, wore his pistol all the time, up until the day he died.” [4] Before Frank Sykes came to Crooked Creek, he lived among the Shoshone Indians in central Wyoming. He was a mountain man and a trapper. In the early 1890s, Sykes and his wife Ann Forsche, “squatted” on Lower Crooked Creek near Sykes Spring, just south of the “ceded strip.“ Sykes’ cabin is near the road that leads into the Dryhead. “He built the cabin on high ground, so as to command all approaches.” Sykes was suspicious of everyone, one reason he wore his pistol all the time. If one crossed Sykes, that person most likely would end up on Sykes” “Death List”. Sykes had no intention of going out and hunting down his “enemies”. But if his “enemies” were wise, he or she would not go near his place. “Mrs. Warren LaRoche, wife of a French-Canadian who had settle on Lower Crook Creek in 1895, had befriended Mrs. Sykes (whom Frank was not on good terms with), possibly siding with her on a dispute with Frank. She earned a place on the ”Death List!”

Texas Ghost Towns Part 2 // Bomarton, Doans, Medicine Mound

For this video I was in the northern part of Texas exploring three really interesting places. The main thing to see in Bomarton is the beautiful Catholic Church, built in the 1930's. Doans is a very historical stop along the Great Western Trail, and there are some nice monuments to check out as well as an 1870's house. We wrap up the trip in Medicine Mound, which takes its name from an area that Native Americans used for their spirital outings. And then in the town there are a couple of incredible old buildings to see. Fun trip!
