Ladoga Fortress is located in the confluence of Volkhov river and Ladozhka river in Staraya Ladoga (Old Ladoga), one of the oldest settlements founded in 753.According to Chronicles, the first wooden fortress was founded in 862 by Rurik and his squad when they came there and founded Russia (Old Rus).
The stone fortress was built on the border of 9th and 10th centuries.
Ladoga Fortress had a very significant strategic meaning for the control of the water way from the Baltic Sea through Volkhov river deeper inside Russia.
