Places to see in ( Elba Island - Italy ) Portoferraio

Places to see in ( Elba Island - Italy ) Portoferraio

Portoferraio is usually the first town you see when arriving on Elba island. Nothing seems to have changed since the times of the Argonauts, as it still remains the most popular arrival destination for all those visitors arriving to this pearl of the Mediterranean. At first sight, Portoferraio, the capital of the island under Napoleonic times, may be considered a sort of Elba in miniature, due to the rare beauty of the natural treasures the island has been safeguarding for ages.

Even if the ferry from mainland doesn’t take very long, I’ve always had the impression of finally arriving at my destination after a long trip, as the Argonauts in Greek mythology might have felt. I feel a strange excitement before getting off the ferry (while still on board, I try to imagine the exact point where the ferry will be anchored) that I can’t wait to literally touch the ground, as if each time might be my last on the island. You might think I’m a little hydrophobic, but I actually really love water and swimming. I just imagine myself playing a pirate during those foolish instants just before my long-awaited holidays (the only excuse I’m able to find is that I’m really stressed from daily life and need that vacation!).

The name of Portoferraio (meaning “Iron Port” in Italian) comes from the iron mills which allowed the city quick growth during the XIXth century: it became, in fact, the main shipping port of profitable iron ore towards the mainland. Thanks to Napoleon's stay, as he was exiled in Elba in 1814 after his defeats in Europe and his forced abdication, Portoferraio and the entire island enjoyed an age of glory. He set up the infrastructure for the exploitation of the iron mills (which constituted the main economic industry of the island even after the end of Napoleonic era when Elba returned to the Gran Duchy of Tuscany), and carried out a series of economic reforms to improve the quality of life and set up a modernization of existing society. Actually, the island became a constantly evolving open-air building site, but mainly, a place worthy of an Emperor’s presence. Like a magnet, he attracted to the island all those people who were respectfully curious to meet that person who had been able to play a skillful game with Europe to achieve his goals. Without plan, they turned the island into a melting pot of different cultures and modern schools of thought as it had never been before.

Portoferraio was chosen by Napoleon as capital of the island and his place of residence. Today we still may visit the two villas where he lived, San Martino and Villa dei Mulini. So here are a few suggestions about the best period for visiting Portoferraio (and the island in general) and what you shouldn’t absolutely miss out on... Elba is a wonderful place to discover all year round, except July and August, when the island gets too crowded. You could take advantage of some interesting events for dropping by Elba a few days, like the international festival of jazz and classical music “Elba Isola musicale d’Europa” – Elba, music island of Europe, which usually takes place in different locations of the island in September. In Portoferraio, events are held in the “Vigilanti Theatre”, an ancient church turned into theatre by Paolina Bonaparte, Napoleon's sister.

As regards cooking events, instead, what you shouldn’t absolutely miss out on in mid April is “Polpando e gli antichi sapori”, where octopus is the main protagonist of a really delicious food event!
To all those who are thirsty for culture, I recommend visiting the Archaeological Civic Museumin addition to the various architectural religious sites: an interesting and easy way of jumping back into the past of the island.

Places to see in ( Elba Island - Italy )

Places to see in ( Elba Island - Italy )

Elba is an Italian island in the Tyrrhenian Sea’s Tuscan Archipelago National Park. It’s known for its beaches, and as Napoleon’s place of exile in 1814–15. In the northern town of Portoferraio, displays at the National Museum of Napoleonic Residences trace the French emperor’s time on the island. In the east, Rio Marina’s Elban Minerals Museum includes reconstructions of mining environments.

Elba is the biggest island of the Tuscan Archipelago and the third largest in Italy after Sardinia and Sicily. Together with eight other islands, including Giglio, Giannutri and Montecristo, it is part of the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago, the largest marine park in Europe.

The island of Elba is famous around the world for harboring French Emperor Napoleon in 1814 during his exile. But its history goes back to prehistory, with the Ilvati tribe from Liguria who named the island Ilva. It was then inhabited first by the Etruscans and later by the Romans, who really appreciated the island and its rich deposits of iron and its mud baths.

There are several memories of its glorious past as we visit the island, from the archaeological findings in its museums to the impressive fortresses and military constructions such as Castello del Volterraio and then on to the beautiful Napoleonic residences of the 1800s such as Palazzina dei Mulini.

What really makes Elba famous and renowned are its clear and blue sea and beautiful beaches. The extraordinary richness of its landscapes, both land and marine, turns the island of Elba into a unique destination in Tuscany. We can say that is a heaven on earth, with nothing to envy of more exotic Caribbean destinations.

In addition, Elba is the perfect place for outdoor sports and activities. Among the most appreciated sports, there is diving and snorkeling in Elba, thanks to its rich seabeds housing lots of different species of fish. But outdoors lovers can also enjoy spending time on land hiking and mountain biking, enjoying a round of golf, a day of sailing or enjoying days of complete relaxation at the thermal baths of San Giovanni. Here's another excellent resource on the Elba island and what you can see and do on the island of Elba

The historic center’s streets - full of interesting places to visit - stretch and wind inside the fortress walls. Despite the seemingly-infinite examples we can find of Florentine rule – who called Portoferraio “Cosmopolis” in those days – others also conquered the scene from time to time, including the Romans. Their influence here is documented by sites like Villa della Linguella, lying along the sea, and Villa delle Grotte, which sits along the provincial road connecting Portoferraio Porto Azzurro.

Signs of French Emperor Napoleon also dot the Province; the Napoleonic Museums inside Villa dei Mulini and Villa San Martino in the historic center narrate his exile on Elba. Another excellent symbol of Elba’s past is the Castello del Volterraio, on the same-named street linking the Commune of Rio Elba to Magazzini. The Castle was constructed by the Pisani during their rule, intended as a lookout point; trekkers should certainly make the visit, as the panoramic view over the central part of the Island is stupendous.

Elba Island, Italy's Secret Paradise: Amazing Cities And Beautiful Beaches

Today we dedicate a little time to Elba Island, Italy's Secret Paradise Elba. We will take a day cruise around the island in the company of the cheerful Captain Silviero and we will see Amazing Cities And Beautiful Beaches.

Greetings from your guide Irina and «TuscanyWalkTour * ITALY».
Sit back, relax, and enjoy the journey.
The island of Elba is the largest of the Tuscan islands and embodies the charm and exclusivity of an area rich in nature, history, and civilization from the ancient Etruscan, Roman and medieval people.
Portoferraio, the capital, and almost mandatory docking for those arriving on Elba. This town is the most populated on the island and holds great treasures of Elban culture.

Remembrance of the ancient Romans is the remains of Villa della Linguella, at the end of the seafront, and of Villa delle Grotte, on the provincial road that connects Portoferraio with Porto Azzurro.
From the Middle Ages, all the charm of the domination of the De 'Medici family remained. Cosimo I de 'Medici had an impregnable fortress built which is still perfectly visible today.

To commemorate the presence of the Emperor of France, Napoleon, who was forced into a long exile on Elba, there are the Napoleonic museums in the Villa Dei Mulini, inside the historic center, and in Villa San Martino, just outside the city.
Another place rich in history is the Volterraio Castle, on the homonymous road that connects the municipality of Rio Elba with Magazzini. Built by the Pisans, during their domination, as a sighting place, today it is an essential destination for trekking lovers and for those who want to admire a magnificent view over the central part of the island.
It seems incredible but a few meters away there are realities so different from each other that Elba is like made up of many small worlds. Eight municipalities: Portoferraio, Marciana, Marciana Marina, Campo Nell Elba, Porto Azzurro, Rio Marina, Capoliveri, Rio Elba seem to be small worlds apart from each one with its culture, traditions, and also the linguistic and architectural cadence of the historic centers.
