Wabakimi - Reflections from the Water...10 Day / 200km Canoeing Story

At the end of the summer of 2022, I had the opportunity to canoe across one of Ontario's premier canoeing destinations.... Wabakimi.

I had previously visited Wabakimi on a fly in fishing trip, but this would be my first time paddling through this enormous park. With millions of acres to explore, you could spend a lifetime traveling this land and not even scratch the surface.

For this trip, I focused on a few specific locations on the eastern side. These locations had been on my bucket list for years!

Wendall Beckwiths’ cabins in the heart of Wabakimi were a top priority. This eccentric scientist moved to Wabakimi in the 1960's and believed Whitewater Lake to be the centre of the universe. I had heard the cabins were rapidly deteriorating, so I wanted to see what remained before it’s too late.

I also took time to paddle the incredible Cliff Lake, which is possibly the most beautiful lake I've ever paddled in Ontario! There must be a couple hundred pictographs along the sheer granite walls of this iconic wilderness lake!

This was an amazing trip where everything seemed to go my way, including the northern lights (aurora borealis) coming out to light up the night sky on two separate evenings.

Paddling though Wabakimi was a very special experience for me and I'm in the process of planning another bigger, longer trip though this immense wilderness in 2023. I hope you enjoy the video.

I also wanted to make a mention of Wabakimi Canoe and Fishing Outfitters. Bruce, Margaret, and Lindsey were all extremely easy to deal with, including a last minute shuttle reservation and some inside information about the park. If you are considering heading to Wabakimi next year I would recommend talking to Bruce and the team as they certainly offer some great services and Im sure could make your trip easier and more enjoyable.

Top 10 Places In Minnesota

Top 10 Places In Minnesota

Minnesota is in the middle of the United States. It is known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes. In fact, there are even more lakes in Minnesota. Water sports fans can't deny that Minnesota is a great place to be. Also, Minnesota has many beautiful national parks, cute cities, and some of the best shopping in the whole country. Here are the top ten places in Minnesota to visit.

Our first time on Minnesota’s North Shore: Grand Portage State Park & National Monument!

We have made it to our first NEW state of 2021: Minnesota! And what a GEM this state is!

For our short time in the state, we decided to focus on one particular area, the North Shore, which is a 145 mile stretch of land along the shore of Lake Superior, the largest of the 5 Great Lakes.

And for the first adventure of our North Shore road trip we drove up to the US/Canada Border to explore the Grand Portage area, including the state park, which is home to the highest falls in Minnesota, an incredible national monument nearby, and see some beautiful views. We also had a VERY exciting wildlife sighting, which was the cherry on top of a beautiful day!

Fascinating Grand Portage National Monument | Northern Minnesota

Fascinating Grand Portage National Monument located in Northern Minnesota. Located on the Northern Shores of Lake Superior, the Grand Portage is an 8.5-mile (13.7 km) footpath which bypasses a set of waterfalls and rapids on the last 20 miles (32 km) of the Pigeon River before it flows into Lake Superior. This path is part of the historic trade route of the French-Canadian voyageurs and coureur des bois between their wintering grounds and their depots to the east.
