Day Trip to Port Arthur ⛴ (FULL EPISODE) S11 E6

This is a day trip in my neck of the woods, the Southeastern border of Texas. It's a gumbo pot of cultures sitting right on the edge of Texas & Louisiana. It may be out of the way, but it's the only way to go for a melting pot of experiences.

The museum in this old bank building covers the town’s history from Jurassic to Janis Joplin. It’s a life-sized textbook, and it’s even got an awesome replica of Janis’s psychedelic Porsche!

This is the site of one of the most significant Civil War battles in Texas, where in 1863, Lt. Dick Dowling and his men fought back an army of Union soldiers 100 times its size at Fort Griffin, preventing Union forces from invading Texas during the war.

This place is just about as Cajun as they come…and you know what that means: BOUDAIN (sausage stuffed with dirty rice). And you can get in just about every form: fried, links, quesadillas, omelets and sandwiches! It’s a truly Southeast Texas experience.

If it swims, they have it. Since 1947, they’ve been serving up all sorts of seafood and Cajun flavors, and everything is made in house. BUT when you visit, you have to get the Sabine Pass Delicacy of barbecue crabs. And don’t be expecting any smoked flavor, these bad boys are all deep fried and all delicious.

Sea Rim is 4000 acres of marshland and 5 miles of beachfront, and it’s one of Texas’s most remote state parks. It’s a beautiful spot of land to slow down and enjoy the coast, or you can do one of my favorite childhood activities: crabbing.

Port Arthur, Texas - United States

Port Arthur is a city in Jefferson County within the Beaumont–Port Arthur metropolitan area of the U.S. state of Texas. A small, uninhabited portion extends into Orange County. It is 90 mi (140 km) east of Houston. The largest oil refinery in the United States, the Motiva Refinery is located in Port Arthur.[5]

The population of Port Arthur was 53,818 at the 2010 census,[6] down from 57,755 at the 2000 census. Early attempts at settlements in the area had all failed. However, in 1895, Arthur Stilwell founded Port Arthur, and the town quickly grew. Port Arthur was incorporated as a city in 1898 and soon developed into a seaport. It eventually became the center of a large oil refinery network.[7] The Rainbow Bridge across the Neches River connects Port Arthur to Bridge City.

Port Arthur is vulnerable to hurricanes and extensive damage to the city has been caused several times.

Day Trip to Port Aransas ???? (FULL EPISODE) S8 E9

On the Northern edge of Mustang Island is this beachy paradise where you'll find tons of history and even more fun in the sun. So grab your swimsuit, jump in a golf cart and get to exploring!

Port A is one of the best places in Texas to ride the waves, and Texas Surf Camps will have you surfing like a pro in no time! So head to the beach and get ready for some gnarly waves!

Take a short boat ride to St. Jo’s Island — which is what the locals call San Jose Island. This remote and uninhabited island is perfect for shelling. For optimal seashell hunting, get out early before the beach is picked over. See if you can find a Lightning Whelk, the state shell of Texas or a whole Sand dollar (which many a Texan has tried, but few have succeeded…) Shirley Fisher at Fisherman’s Wharf will be happy to take you out and show you the ropes.

One of the things you have to do when you’re in Port A is buy all kinds of beachy knick-knacks and Port Aransas-themed junk at a souvenir shop — and you’ll find tons all over the island. I suggest you head to Destination Beach & Surf, where you can get a selfie with the giant shark out front before your shopping spree.

For a sweet island treat, head to Winton’s where you’ll find all your favorite candies! Just make sure you save room for Winton’s homemade caramel– it’s the perfect amount of gooey, chewy and delicious, and comes in different varieties like pecan or chocolate-covered.

Farley Boat Works is the most historic boat shop on the island. They’ve been making Tarpon boats the same way since 1915, and you can stop by to see their classic boats. And if you’re really feeling creative, they’ll even teach you how to make your own boat in a Tarpon building workshop!

Soak in the ocean breeze on the porch of this historic hotel that’s been hosting guests on the island since 1886. While the hotel itself is an architectural beauty, the real treasures are the Tarpon scales all over the walls, signed by the folks who caught them. You’ll even find a Tarpon scale signed by former President Franklin D. Roosevelt from when he visited Port A on a fishing trip in 1937!

For a meal unlike any other on the island, grab some grub at Irie’s. This “island food” is a mixture of American, tropical and Asian street foods that’s all homemade and all amazing! I suggest the Treasure Beef, which is tenderloin in a sweet and hot sauce topped with peanuts and cilantro on steamed rice.

Behind the historic Tarpon Inn is this seafood eatery where you can dine on upscale meals in a casual setting. Enjoy fresh seafood like the Oysters ala Roosevelt or the fantastic Coconut Shrimp in the garden out back as the sun sets over the island.

After dinner, hit up the “coolest bar on the Texas Riviera,” the Salty Dog for their namesake drink, which is a refreshing mix of salt, gin and grapefruit. If you’re lucky, you might even come across the friendly dog this place was named after. It’s the best place to end a day on the beach.

Road Trip #288 - US-90 West - I-10 Exit 869: Bridge City through Beaumont, Texas

Road Trip #288 - US Highway 90 - I-10 Exit 869: Bridge City through Beaumont, Texas

Since this video is really about US Highway 90, we continue along the US-90/I-10 concurrency at warp speed until we get to the city of Beaumont, where US-90 travels through town. Here, we slow down and see the town.

At exit 855A, we leave I-10 and head into downtown Beaumont. Beaumont was founded as a town in 1835. The early European-American settlement had an economy based on the development of lumber, farming, and port industries. A big change occurred in 1901 with the Spindletop gusher, which demonstrated the potential of the huge oil field. With Spindletop, several energy companies developed in Beaumont, and some continue. The area rapidly developed as one of the major petro-chemical refining areas in the country. Along with Port Arthur and Orange, Beaumont forms the Golden Triangle, a major industrial area on the Texas Gulf Coast. Beaumont is home of Lamar University, a national Carnegie Doctoral Research university with 14,966 students, including undergraduates and post graduates. Over the years, several corporations have been based in this city, including Gulf States Utilities which had its headquarters in Beaumont until its takeover by Entergy Corporation in 1993. GSU's Edison Plaza headquarters is still the tallest building in Beaumont.

Prior to the birth of the Interstate Highway system in 1956, the US Highways were the main method of cross-country automobile travel, and in Beaumont, some reminders still remain here on the Old Spanish Trail. Vintage motels and gas stations still remain on what was once the most heavily traveled east-west corridor in the southern United States. Of special note is a former Alamo Plaza Hotel Courts on the right, originally opened in 1938, now operating as the Deluxe Inn. This was one of their 29 locations, and it still retains the unique Alamoesque facade. As I've mentioned in other videos, as a child, I spent many summer weekends at the Alamo Plaza in Gulfport, Mississippi, and it's interesting to see that some of these are still standing. We'll see another one later on in this series.
More about the Alamo Plaza and other vintage hotels:

Some points of interest in Beaumont: Since 1907, Beaumont has been home of the South Texas State Fair and Rodeo, held at Ford Park during March. It is the second-largest fair in the state, attracting more than 500,000 visitors in 2009. The fair features a livestock show, a commercial exhibition, a carnival midway and numerous food choices. The Fair moved from the Fair Park Coliseum to Ford Park in 2004, a new, larger facility on the west end of Beaumont. The fair was previously held in the fall but was moved to spring after hurricanes Rita in 2005 and Ike in 2008 caused its cancellation twice within three years. The YMBL Championship Rodeo is held at Ford Park during the South Texas State Fair. The rodeo is an annual event and is sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. Admission to the rodeo is included in fair admission.
The Gusher Marathon, organized in 2010 by the local nonprofit Sports Society for American Health, is the city's first annual marathon. The Gusher takes place in March and includes a 5K, half marathon and full marathon. The course begins at the Montagne Center of Lamar University and tours Downtown and Lamar before returning to the Montagne.
The Beaumont Jazz & Blues Fest is a Jazz festival held in downtown Beaumont since 2005.
The Boomtown Film and Music Festival is a film and music festival that began in 2008 to replace the Spindletop Film Festival.
Dog Jam is a rock concert held annually at Ford Park.
Each year, a July 4th celebration is held in downtown Beaumont. The celebration includes live music in and around Riverfront Park, a concert by the Symphony of Southeast Texas in the Julie Rogers Theatre, followed by a fireworks display viewed from Riverfront Park.
Each Monday starting in March, the City of Beaumont provides live music and seating at the Event Centre in downtown Beaumont. Ten vendors feature a wide choice of food selections.
On the first Saturday of December, downtown hosts the Beaumont Downtown Winter Parade. The parade features floats that travel down Main, College and Pearl streets. In recent years the parade has also featured a lighted boat parade that travels down the Neches River; spectators can watch from Riverfront Park.
