Day Trip to Port Isabel ???? (FULL EPISODE) S10 E11

Port Isabel has one of the best beaches in Texas -- and it's not even on the coast! Dive into all the tropical fun you need for a coastal getaway in one of the oldest towns in South Texas.

At the center of the city, this lighthouse shines like a beacon to all those who travel to Port Isabel. And though it’s light stopped glowing in 1905, it’s still one of the best spots to get an incredible view of town.

In the historic general store is a museum with artifacts that prove that this town has been a summer resort destination since the 1800s. Next door at the Treasures of the Gulf museum, you can also wander through exhibits full of treasures from sunken Spanish Ships.

One of the most diverse habitats in Texas, this 98,000 acre wilderness is home to over 400 bird species and rare animals, like the endangered ocelot. Grab your binoculars and start exploring!

Sadly, since filming, Manuel’s has permanently closed after 37 years of business.

Eating seafood on the coast is a must, and there’s no better place than at a fish market like Los Tortugo’s where the seafood dishes are served as fresh as they come. While they will cook whatever you catch, I highly suggest ordering their famous ceviche that’s made with a recipe so secret, that only a chosen few are allowed to make it.

Since the water in the Port Isabel bay is saltier than the ocean, the bayfishing here is world-class. But to truly catch a whopper, you need Captain Curry to show you the sweet spots where you’ll find the biggest fish in the bay.

TOP 10 Reasons why CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS is the WORST city in the US!

Don’t move to Corpus Christ, Texas. Seriously. Let us tell you why.. In this series we tell you the WORST places to live in the United States. Our TOP 10 Lists tell you where NOT to move and why we think you should avoid it.

Corpus Christi is a Texas city on the Gulf of Mexico. It’s tucked into a bay and its beaches are sheltered by Padre and Mustang islands. The Padre Island National Seashore is home to migratory birds and endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles. The harborfront Texas State Aquarium has touch pools, an aquatic nursery and a shark exhibit. Nearby, a WWII aircraft carrier, USS Lexington, now houses a naval aviation museum. ― Google

#CORPUSCHRISTI #TEXAS #SELENA I don’t know if you need to hear this, but:

These lists are not intended to be used for making life changing decisions. They are just another look at the city. I present both good and bad points of view on this channel. I don’t just make videos that are negative. There are positive videos on the channel too, check them out. They are made from statistical sources made available by government agencies as well as first hand resident experiences. If you are happy living here, I am happy for you. No need to send me death threats.

Our First Boondocking Experience - Magnolia Beach - Port Lavaca, Texas

2/14/2020 - Our plans took us down to the Gulf Coast, and we stopped for our first boondocking experience. Free camping at its finest. It was an awesome experience and so nice to fall asleep listening to the gentle waves hitting the beach just outside of our bedroom window.

We did park incorrectly. If you park parallel to the beach a not-so-friendly resident of the area will take your license number, let you know you are parked incorrectly, and call the city building on you. We'll let you figure out how we found that out. We only stayed a couple of nights and the beach was pretty vacant so I didn't have to move. We recommend if you visit to make sure you park perpendicular to the beach so you don't get the visit and have to move your RV. There is a sign that we did not see when we first got there that lists some of the rules for the beach.

We will be staying here again!

Day Trip to Port Lavaca ???? (FULL EPISODE) S6 E4

THROWBACK EPISODE - This episode originally aired on PBS on October 20, 2014. Some of the locations may have changed. Check for the most up-to-date information.

EPISODE OVERVIEW -

Just about halfway between the well-traveled waters of Galveston Bay and Corpus Christi Bay sits Matagorda Bay. A lesser known body of water that’s surrounded by charming towns, full of abundant wildlife and rife with amazing history.

On the northwest side of the bay is Port Lavaca, the county seat of Calhoun County which has been a VERY important place in Texas history. To learn about it all, head to the Calhoun County Museum which can fill you in on everything that happened here from the Native Indians, to the Frenchman La Salle, up to Indianola which was one of the biggest cities in Texas in the late 1800’s. The museum has a number of great artifacts, including items recovered from La Salle’s ship the La Belle.

This historic lighthouse was once located in the middle of the bay, but now it’s landlocked so trippers like you and I can explore it. Check out this piece of history and get a cool view of town from the top.

As you move down the west side of the bay you can still visit the place where La Salle first sat foot in Texas claiming it all for France. He established Fort St. Louis nearby which failed to be a long term settlement which is why we don’t speak French in Texas. Today, the spot where he landed is marked with a statue of the great French explorer.

Keep walking down the bay and you’ll arrive at Indianola, which is just a shadow of what it used to be as a series of hurricanes reduced this bustling port city to a remote fishing village. The only remnants left of Old Indianola are a few patches of concrete and the old cemetery. Folks say it is haunted, but we didn’t stick around to find out.

If you really want to hit the bay waters right, then head to Port O’Connor and schedule a charted fishing trip. We went with Capt. Mike Bohac at Fishing Tales Guide Service, but he has retired since we filmed this segment. On the Coastal Conservation Association website, you can find an expert on the middle coast area that will land you a keeper or two of Texas red, trout, flounder, or whatever you might be looking for.

The adventure in Port O’Connor doesn’t stop with fishing. I recommend getting a charter boat to Matagorda Island which holds the Matagorda Island Lighthouse. This cast iron beauty towering almost 100 feet tall is well worth the 2.5 mile bike ride or hike to get there.

While you’re in town and hungry, grab some amazing Texas-style BBQ that’s made the Texas Monthly’s Top BBQ list.

If you do catch some fish in the bay, take it to Josie’s Mexican Food, where they’ll cook it up right with onions, tomatoes, and spice. They also make some mean Mexican food if you don’t land the fish you want or would rather take your’s home and cook it yourself.

Dash cam: Port Lavaca, Texas

A driving tour of the town of Port Lavaca, Texas. Port Lavaca is located in northern Calhoun County on the west side of Lavaca Bay, an arm of Matagorda Bay. Port Lavaca holds the state record of the highest wind speed ever reached. During Hurricane Carla in September 1961, the winds were recorded to gust up to 170 miles per hour (270 km/h).

The video is created using a DJI Pocket 2 camera. It is filmed and edited at 4K Ultra HD. This area is a beautiful tourist destination in South Texas. Our videos provide you with an easy way to explore and discover Texas, and help decide if it's worth the trip to see it in person.

We really enjoyed our time at the Port Lavaca KOA. Here are a few of our thoughts about it.

❤️What we loved:
Close to the water.

The waterfront site was worth the extra money for us and the staggered sites were awesome. For a resort like this the sites were pretty roomy

The pool is heated to 87 degrees (though there was some trouble with it here and there while we were here)

????????Things They Do Really Well:
This is a very new campground and you can tell they’re working hard to make it awesome. They’re constantly working to keep it clean and well maintained.

They are very friendly and their service was amazing.

We didn’t get to feature it in the video, but the cabins were really nice as well.

????Things to Know:
It was windy. That’s great for flying kites!

It’s not much of a “beach”. If you want to play in the sand and build sand castles, we’d recommend going to an actual beach. We liked the one in Port O’Connor best. ????

Groceries are a little over 20 minutes away. There’s an H‑E‑B and a Walmart in Port Lavaca!

BONUS VIDEO:
We searched and searched for a Port Lavaca sticker with no success. It’s not as much of a tourist town as somewhere like South Padre Island, so we weren’t too surprised. We did get some shakes, though, so it wasn’t all bad. ????

Port Lavaca Texas!

A pictorial vid of one of my trips to Port Lavaca Texas, just south of Houston and just north of Corpus Christi along the gulf coast! We also went to Magnolia Beach and down to Corpus Christi. The last few pics are Corpus. The beach with the blue shelters is at Magnolia Beach. The beach where you see the most people was at Port O' Conner. Port Lavaca also has a small beach area on the end of town right before the bridge, as seen in the beginning of the video. Enjoy!

Lighthouse Beach in Port Lavaca, TX | Who Will Win the Sand Castle Battle?

In this video we visit a beach in Port Lavaca called Lighthouse Beach. We were all ready for a beach day after the cold temperatures in Dallas! The boys really enjoyed building sand castles and then decided to battle it out to see who could destroy the other’s castle first.

We also had a lot of fun with the water being very shallow. It was fun to be able to run around in it.

We’re a family of four with two boys and a labradoodle. In October 2021, we sold and gave away just about everything.

NOW we’re traveling the country in our 42 foot fifth wheel with our family. Everyday is a journey and there have already been so many adventures along the way…
