Morbihan is an administrative département on the southern coast of Brittany, France’s northwestern-most region. Many, even those who have traveled to France before, have never heard of Morbihan. It’s the only French department whose name, meaning “little sea”, comes from the Breton language. Although few residents still speak Breton, the traditional language has left its mark on geographic terms, town and city names, and first and last names of the Breton people.
The Morbihan is made up of 261 cities and towns, and there are many more villages and hamlets in between. Your experience will be different depending on whether you choose to live in one of the larger cities of the region or in a small town. As well, the Gulf of Morbihan is home to 42 islands.
Morbihan has a rich history, spanning thousands of years, that has left visible vestiges of the region’s inhabitants from the Stone Age to the Celts to the Romans to various groups coming from the British Isles and most recently from throughout France. Along with these multiple political influences has come a variety of architectural, linguistic and cultural inspirations.
The architecture of Morbihan’s cities offers numerous half-timbered medieval buildings, while the countryside brings numerous thatched-roof stone houses, reminders of British and Irish architecture. It’s also very well known for its Neolithic sites.
As for the music produced in Brittany, the Celtic roots are the most audible. In recent decades, traditional Celtic music and modern variations of this traditional style have seen a resurgence in popularity. Especially in summertime, on any given evening you rarely have to drive more than thirty minutes to find a Celtic music concert.
You’ll live like a king in Morbihan. A 4-bedroom, 3-level home with an enclosed yard in the center of Baden is only 600 euros per month. Baden is one of the more expensive towns you could choose in Morbihan.
Morbihan is a largely rural region of France that offers an excellent quality of life compared the cost of living. If you thrive on big city excitement and cosmopolitan offerings, this may not be the ideal spot for you. It’s tough to get around all but the larger cities without a car. Although the community is generally very accepting of foreigners, it will be difficult to feel as though you fully belong with such a small (in some towns non-existent) expat presence, at least if you are not proficient in French. But Morbihan is a fantastic base for anyone enamored with the outdoors: water sports, walking, cycling. You will have the benefits of living in France (safety, exceptional health care and infrastructure, a range of cultural options) without the costs of the capital city or other more touristic areas. Morbihan is a seafood lover’s paradise. It offers a unique blend of the French and Breton-brand Celtic cultures. The climate is mild. Morbihan may be an ideal retirement destination for French speakers who prefer a more relaxed lifestyle.

????This village is Rochefort-en-Terre located in the department of Morbihan, region of Brittany, France.
????It was voted as the most beautiful village in France (Les Plus Beaux Villages de France)
????It is also labeled as Petite Cité de Caractère (Small Cities of Character) thanks to its well preserved architecture and cultural heritage.
????It is included in the list of villages with the best floral and green spaces (Villes et Villages Fleuris). They have won the competition several times and were awarded the Golden Flower.
????In 2016, Rochefort-en-Terre was elected Le Village préféré des Français (Favorite village of the French).
The best time to visit is in summer when everything is in full bloom but it can get quite busy.????

Travel in France: Ploërmel - The Best of Brittany? Is it Worth a Visit? It's Outdoor Market is WOW!
Looking for top travel tips? Is Ploërmel, France one of the best places in Brittany to visit?? It may not be the most common place to vacation - some French people might even say, You're going WHERE?? - but this Breton town has a lot more to offer than meets the eye. And it makes an excellent home base from which to explore the region. Whether you are staying for a short visit or a long one. And yes - you can see a lot even without a car.
Ploërmel has one of the best weekly outdoor farmer's markets I've ever been to. So plan a stay that includes a kitchen. You are going to want to cook for sure. It's a foodie's paradise! There are several boulangeries/patisseries (bakeries/pastry shops), several BIG supermarkets and many great places to eat out (even aside from Kebab Chez Tonton 56 ????) but that Friday market will make your little eyes go WOW I guarantee you.
If you like the outdoors, Ploërmel has one of the biggest lakes in Brittany and thus lots of watersports to enjoy as well as miles of phenomenal bike and walking trails and places to hike around. There are great museums, a bowling alley, a movie theater, local soccer/football games and great sites, towns and villages close by to explore.
I spent a month in Ploërmel and wrote a blog post about it for my website, Reganland.com. I wanted to see what it would be like to put together a video version of that post so I used it as a voice-over script and then assembled photos, video and web page content to create the video.
I won't be doing that again. ????
It was fun - a lot of work, but fun - however, based on what I learned through that process - next time, I'll use a different process! If I'd taken more photos and videos, that would have helped, but next time my whole approach will be different.
In any case - I hope you enjoy the video and even more so, I hope you make it out to Ploërmel sometime if you've not already been.

The Golfe Du Morbihan is situated on the south coast of Brittany and protects the region from the strong currents of the Atlantic Ocean. It is a fascinating coastal landscape with huge castles and extensive sand dunes.Influential and wealthy ship owners once settled here. They ran the East India Trading Company that earned high taxes for the French monarchy. The present day harbor makes it difficult to believe that it was once a busy centre of trade with the distant Orient. The town’s well preserved buildings indicate its former wealth and ferryboats travel to the village on the opposite side of the Lorient, which still boasts a splendid array of huge warehouses.The megaliths of Carnac are stone relics that are 1,000 years old and date back to the middle of the Neolithic Period. Although they have been analysed by scientists, they are nonetheless full of mystique as four long avenues of mighty stone known as ‘Alignments’ extend across 8 kilometres of scenic terrain.The enchanting medieval city of Auray is situated on a bend of the Rivière d'Auray that flows into the Golfe Du Morbihan. The city has earned its place in the history books of Brittany. Here, two families once fought to rule this land and a battle decided which one!The attractive charm of the Brittany landscape owes much of its allure to its picturesque old stone houses and idyllic bays. The Golfe Du Morbihan, with its numerous islands both large and small, is a French paradise set along the rugged Atlantic coast.
