Skylands: Pompton Junction, A Brief History of the North Jersey Railways | 4KUHD

Back in the day, people used to refer to certain train routes by nicknames, such as the Twilight, the Phoebe Snow, or Westerner. Each route served from one city to another, often connecting with other routes at a Junction. One such junction is the Pompton Junction in Pompton Lakes.

Pompton Junction was the place where the New York & Greenwood Lake Railway and the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway intersected. These were both parts of the larger Erie Railroad.

Fun Fact: at one time, two competing Railroad Builders were racing to get to Pompton Junction first. They were the Montclair Railway and the Midland Railway, Midland Won, and traveled through Pompton Junction onward to Midvale while Montclair adjusted their route to Greenwood lake instead.

Along the rail line, The New York & Greenwood Lake Railway had stops for Wanaque-Midvale station, Monksville Reservoir, Hewitt, Greenwood Lakes, and Sterling Forest. Many of these towns owe their growth to the railroad, and Pompton Lakes is one example.

Prior to the railroad Pompton Lakes was known as the home of the Yellow Tavern, a famous revolutionary war-era tavern where General George Washington Met Robert Erskin, who later lived in Ringwood Manor and became a cartographer general in George Washington's army. It really wasn't until the Railroad opened in Pompton Junction in the late 1870s that Pompton Lakes really began to really grow.

Did you know that Pompton Lakes was once Home to some surprising famous people? Such as:

Lovell Lawrence Jr., (1915–1971) a Rocket Scientist, credited with breaking the sound barrier

And Joe Louis (May 13, 1914 – April 12, 1981) a boxer and a person of color Nicknamed the Brown Bomber, widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential boxers of all time.

And Twiggy Ramirez (born 1971), bassist and guitarist for Marilyn Manson!

Did you know that: Pompton Junction served more than just leisurely commuters. The New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway is a freight train that was initially used as a way to connect industrial New Jersey to the ports on the Hudson Waterfront at Hoboken. Nowadays, it is not uncommon to see freight trains because the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway is still in operation and can still be seen hauling freight through Pompton Lakes.

Fun fact: the Susquehanna was Once known as the biggest little railroad in the country. The Railroad was formed from a merger of many smaller lines. The rail linked eastern Jersey City to various lines connecting NJ with PA and Upstate New York

By the early 1920s, there was a decline of passenger trains because people could afford their own personal vehicles or taking the bus. The passenger lines to Greenwood Lake were halted and Pompton Junction station fell into ruin. By 1941, the tower that once stood tall at the station burnt to the ground. All that's left are the tracks used by the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway.

What is Boonton NJ famous for?

to submit contest entry, winners get a free t-shirt.

Currently called Boonton, this quirky town owes its name to a Thomas Boone, a Colonial Governor, in the 1700's. Boone-Towne was established around the ironworks industry and grew under a man named Obadiah Baldwin.

During the American Revolutionary War, the Booneton Iron Works produced iron for the military. Later, with the construction of the Morris Canal, the New Jersey Iron Company was formed and the town grew.

Speaking of wars, Boonton Citizens proudly served in WWII

During WWII, people flew a flag with a blue star in their front window so everyone in town knew that a family member was serving in the military. If the star was gold however, it indicated that a soldier had died in the line of duty.

Welcome to Boonton Reservoir. During the 18th Century this area was Called Boonetown Falls, and the center of town was around where the reservoir sits today.

In 1908, John Leal with the help of George Fuller constructed a chlorination plant at Boonton Reservoir which became the first of its kind in the nation. Around the same time Boonton's Loanda Hard Rubber Company became famous for producing a type of early plastic used in kitchens worldwide.

Did you know that Grace Lorde Park sits on Boonton Gorge. A Gorge is defined as a narrow valley between hills or mountains, typically with steep rocky walls and a stream running through it.

Created in 1829 the time the morris canal was used to transport coal to the ironworks and then products to markets. The Morris canal was a complex series of locks and planes that allowed water and boats to connect industry to markets and harbors. After just under 100 years of service the rail road came and the morris canal was mostly broken apart.

This is also the site of the original Booton, which was flooded to create the Booton Reservoir. This reservoir provides drinking water to the residents of Jersey City, NJ

I'm at the The United Railroad Historical Society of New Jersey, Inc. a non-profit educational organization which supports the preservation of historic railroad equipment in New Jersey. Check out all these train cars!

The Boonton Branch was a rail road built in 1870 and ran 34 miles from Hoboken to East Dover Junction. The railroad passed through Lyndhurst, Passaic, Clifton, Paterson, Wayne, Lincoln Park, Mountain Lakes, and its namesake, Boonton. Originally formed as a Freight Line carrying materials, the rail line currently run by New Jersey Transit, has been serving commuters and travelers alike ever since.

Parsippany NJ

This video looks best in 4K.

- Parsippany-Troy Hills Township, commonly known as Parsippany, is a township in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 53,238, reflecting an increase of 2,589 (+5.1%) from the 50,649 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 2,171 (+4.5%) from the 48,478 counted in the 1990 Census.

The name Parsippany comes from the Lenape Native American sub-tribe, which comes from the word parsipanong, which means the place where the river winds through the valley. Parsippany-Troy Hills is the most populous municipality in Morris County. The name Troy Hills was changed from Troy, to avoid confusion of mail being sent erroneously to Troy, New York.

Parsippany-Troy Hills was incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 12, 1928, from portions of Hanover Township, based on the results of a referendum held on May 9, 1928, that split off both East Hanover Township and Parsippany-Troy Hills from Hanover Township.

Since 2006, Parsippany-Troy Hills has been consistently recognized by Money magazine as one of the Best Places to Live in the United States. That year Parsippany was ranked 17th on the list, the highest-ranked location in New Jersey. In 2008, it moved up to 13th position. Parsippany returned to Money magazine's Best Places list in 2012, in the 15th position, and again in 2014, where it ranked 16th with Money citing its Arts and leisure. Parsippany's ranking improved to the 5th-ranked position on the Best Places list in 2016, but in 2017 dropped to 33rd. In 2018, Parsippany again made the list, at the 23rd-ranked position.

Exploring the Scenic Drive from Ringwood, NJ to Sloatsburg, NY: A Journey Through History and Nature

County Road 697, also known as Sloatsburg Road, is a historic road located in Ringwood, New Jersey. The road dates back to the colonial era when it was originally a Native American trail that connected the Hudson River with the Delaware River.

During the American Revolution, Sloatsburg Road played an important role in the war effort. It was used by both the British and American armies to transport troops and supplies between New York City and the Hudson River. The road was also used by George Washington and his troops during their retreat from the Battle of Brooklyn in 1776.

In the 19th century, Sloatsburg Road became an important route for transportation and commerce, connecting the iron mines of northern New Jersey with the markets of New York City. The road was widened and improved to accommodate the increasing traffic, and several stagecoach stops and taverns were established along the route.

Today, Sloatsburg Road is a scenic byway that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. It is also home to several historic landmarks, including the Ringwood Manor House and the New Jersey State Botanical Garden. The road remains an important transportation route, connecting Ringwood with neighboring towns and providing access to the nearby Ramapo Mountains and Harriman State Park

Kayaking near Pompton Lake

“See the TURTLE of enormous girth! On his shell, he holds the earth.
― Stephen King

Welcome to Pompton lake, a man-made lake nestled between the townships of Oakland and Wayne. The borough of Pompton Lakes was based around the Pompton Iron Works, German Artistic Weaving Company, and then later the DuPont Company. From 1800 to the early 1900s Pompton Lakes was served by the New York and Susquehanna Railroad at the Pompton Junction, bringing business, industry, and at one point tourism to the borough.

Before America was Founded, before the Dutch even came to settle these lands, the Ramapo River was home to various native tribes. The Lenne Lenape, Munsee, Ramapo, and the Pompton People have all lived in this region. Speaking two different dialects Munsee and Unami, the tribes often met, traded, or clashed throughout the ages.

The largest grouping is the Lenne Lenape, which fell into 3 different groups, each following a different totem animal. The people, on whose land I am currently on, were of the turtle. Northwest of here where the people of the Wolf and along the coast was the turkey. In addition to the totemic animal, The Lenape worships the Sun, Fire, and the Four Winds. The four winds were the bringers of rain and sunshine and rulers of the weather, while the fire was considered the Grandfather of all Indian nations.

Did you know that The missionaries often referred to the native priests as medicine men? These men were not only healers but also oracles.

Fun Fact the Lenne Lenape had a Piece time and Wartime chief, shifting the power when the situation arises. Both of which were separate from the so-called Medicine Men

Let's talk a bit about the legends. Originally passed down verbally then painted as pictographs, one of the most famous of the Lenne Lenape tales is that told in The Walam Olum. *

It was believed that in the beginning there were two forces, one good and one bad. The good one created the turtle, and out of the turtles' shell grew a massive tree which sprouted the first people. The evil one created the snake. The snake brought sickness, droughts, and hated the people, so he flooded the land forcing them to retreat into canoes. The people sailed until they found a small dry spot on the back of the great turtle. Eventually, the waters calmed, dried up, and receded, and as it did the turtle shell exposed more land and vegetation started to grow, giving the people a new home and starting the legend that the world rests on the back of a turtle.

Along the Ramapo: History of the Cannonball Trail and Federal Hill in New Jersey

The Ramapo river, a beautiful and plentiful river, begins in a small freshwater lake in the Village of Monroe N.Y and flows through Potash Lake in Oakland and then into Pompton Lake in Pompton Lakes.. As we travel these various curves let's look back in time to the early years of american settlement, to the Colonial time of the revolutionary war.

Cannonball Trail:
Cannonball Trail was once a busy yet secretive trail to those on the forefront of the American Revolution. It follows the route of the Ramapo and Passaic Rivers and passes through the Ramapo mountains and the towns Mahwah and Oakland, to name just a few.

This trail was essential because it was the path used to transport food, clothing, intel, ammunition, and other essentials to the soldiers on the front line of then struggling war effort.

Today, some of the historic Cannonball trail is preserved as a hiking trail, part of which crosses I-287 and was once a popular spot for local hikers.

Dey Mansion, located in modern-day Wayne N J. served as a headquarters for General George Washinton during the American Revolutionary War from 1776 to 1781. He camped there with approximately 2000 soldiers. It was the place where Washington learned of the traitorous act of Benedict Arnold; where he betrayed us and informed the British of our plans to seize New York City from their control.

Fun fact: Did you know that the Wayne/ Bloomingdale area was home to Alexander Hamilton, Marquis de LaFayette, and General Anthony Wayne, all of whom joined forces with Washington?

The Mutiny on Federal Hill:
During the early periods of American history, there were many acts that have shaped the character of not only the Army but of the United States as a whole. On January 20th, 1781, a mutiny involving 200-300 soldiers took place on what is now Bloomingdale.

The mutiny started because basic provisions such as blankets and food have been denied to the soldiers that have already gone a year without pay, Two soldiers deflected, enlisted other soldier conspirators, and decided to take their grievances to Trenton. However, with a lack of support, the soldiers were convinced to go back to the area of what is now Union Ave in Bloomingdale, N.J. There, the two original 2 mutiny leaders, were captured, and after a short trial executed by a firing squad made up of their co-conspirators.

Later, General Washington acknowledged those who were part of the mutiny and their grievances. In his letter, he states, “having punished guilt and supported authority-it now becomes proper to do justice.”

Discovering the Beauty of Lafayette Township, New Jersey: A Scenic Drive along Country Route 661

Lafayette Township is located in Sussex County, New Jersey, in the United States. It was first settled by the Dutch in the early 18th century, and was originally part of Newton Township. In 1845, Lafayette was established as a separate township, taking its name from the Marquis de Lafayette, the French military leader who fought in the American Revolution.

During the 19th century, Lafayette Township developed as an agricultural community, with dairy farming and fruit orchards being prominent industries. The township was also home to several mills, which used water power from the Paulins Kill stream to produce flour, lumber, and other products.

In the early 20th century, Lafayette experienced an influx of vacationers and summer residents, who were attracted to the area's natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities. This led to the development of several summer camps and resorts, which became a major part of the local economy.

Today, Lafayette Township remains a rural community, with a population of around 3,900. It is known for its picturesque landscapes, outdoor recreation, and historic landmarks, such as the Lafayette Grist Mill and the Van Campen Inn.

CR 661 is a county road located in Lafayette, New Jersey. The road has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s when it was first constructed.

In the early days, CR 661 was a dirt road used primarily for transportation between neighboring towns. However, as time passed, the road was improved to accommodate the growing number of travelers and businesses in the area.

During the 1900s, CR 661 played a significant role in the growth and development of the region. The road became an essential route for farmers transporting their crops to nearby markets and for commuters traveling to and from work.

In the mid-1900s, the road underwent major renovations and upgrades to improve safety and efficiency. The improvements included widening the road, adding traffic signals and signage, and resurfacing the pavement.

Today, CR 661 remains an important roadway for the residents and businesses of Lafayette and the surrounding areas. It connects several major highways and provides access to many local attractions, including state parks, historical sites, and recreational areas.

Despite the road's long history, it has not been without controversy. In recent years, there have been debates over the road's speed limits, safety features, and overall maintenance. However, local officials and community members continue to work together to ensure that CR 661 remains a safe and reliable route for all who travel on it.
