10 Most Hated Towns in England

What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

Arles, Provence in the south of France

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
videos, transcripts & photos at We are taking you to the beautiful city of Arles, in Provence in the south of France. Arles is most famous for its Roman amphitheater, still intact, and its connections with Van Gogh, who spent one of his final years here painting 200 canvases. Its real appeal, however, is found in the lovely pedestrian promenades, the historic landmarks, museums and tranquil plazas, all of which make Arles one of the most charming places in Europe.
Click to Subscribe
There's a lot of these narrow streets in Arles, there is a small pedestrian zone, there's the various squares and the cafés around it, of course, and historic sites. And we will be showing you those highlights coming up right now as we take a walk through Arles.
The old town of Arles is comfortably small. It's about a square mile. So it's very easy to see the whole thing on foot. You might consider spending a couple of days here.
Or you could visit as a daytrip for example from Avignon which is just 20 miles away and only takes 20 minutes by train to get here. In this program we will show you how you can do everything in one day but certainly if you want to spend more time you decide for yourself. To help you plan your visit we will also present more detailed suggestions about how you could spend a night or two here and still find lots to do.

This is part of a series we’re presenting showing how Avignon makes a very good home base for visiting out to other destinations like Pont du Gard, and St Remy and Nimes along with Aix and Marseille, and especially Arles, the wonderful city of van Gogh and the ancient Romans, with narrow pedestrian lanes weaving throughout the center
The main attractions are the arena, the pedestrian zone and a historic museum. We will show you a good walking route on the map. Of course you can walk anywhere you want, it’s small enough, but this route will take you right through the center and then back to the train station, a route just over 2 miles, or about 3 kilometers, you can do in several hours. But you should also see the history museum while you're here, with its fine collection from the ancient Roman days, an easy detour. So let's assume you're coming in from Avignon on a day trip and you want to see everything.

Pompey’s Pillar | The Only Surviving Whole Ancient Monument in Alexandria | Egypt Travel Vlog |30N19

Pompey’s Pillar & The Temple of Serapeum | Road Trip from Cairo to Alexandria

Egypt Travel Blog: 10 DAYS Egypt Explorer - Felucca Cruise & Red Sea

Pompey's Pillar is a massive 30m column made from red Aswan granite and 2.7m at its base was originally part of the Temple of Serapeum, dedicated to Serapis.

Built in 297 AD, Pompey’s Pillar to celebrate the victory of Roman emperor Diocletian and to support a statue of the emperor.

Underneath the column lies the ruins of the temple of Serapis, the hybrid Greek and Egyptian god of Alexandria, although badly damaged.

Pompey’s Pillar on top is the only ancient monument surviving whole and standing in Alexandria today.

You will also see two other surviving Roman copies of the Sphinx, but much smaller than the Great Sphinx at Giza.

Both Sphinxes, showing the body of a lion and the head of a man, are made from pink granite and of an earlier date than the pillar.

Arles - France - Unesco World Heritage Site

Arles is a city and commune in the south of France, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, of which it is a subprefecture, in the former province of Provence.Geography
The Roman arena in Arles

The Rhône river forks into two branches just upstream of Arles, forming the Camargue delta. Because the Camargue is for a large part administratively part of Arles, the commune as a whole is the largest commune in Metropolitan France in terms of territory, although its population is only slightly more than 50,000. Its area is 758.93 km2 (293.02 sq mi), which is more than seven times the area of Paris.
[edit] History
[ edit ] Ancient era

The Ligurians were in this area from about 800 BC. Later Celtic influences have been discovered. The city became an important Phoenician trading port, before being taken by the Romans.

The Romans took the town in 123 BC and expanded it into an important city, with a canal link to the Mediterranean Sea being constructed in 104 BC. However, it struggled to escape the shadow of Massalia (Marseilles) further along the coast.

Its chance came when it sided with Julius Caesar against Pompey, providing military support. Massalia backed Pompey; when Caesar emerged victorious, Massalia was stripped of its possessions, which were transferred to Arelate as a reward. The town was formally established as a colony for veterans of the Roman legion Legio VI Ferrata, which had its base there. Its full title as a colony was Colonia Iulia Paterna Arelatensium Sextanorum, the ancestral Julian colony of Arles of the soldiers of the Sixth.

Arelate was a city of considerable importance in the province of Gallia Narbonensis. It covered an area of some 99 acres (400,000 m²) and possessed a number of monuments, including an amphitheatre, triumphal arch, Roman circus, theatre, and a full circuit of walls. Ancient Arles was closer to the sea than it is now and served as a major port. It also had (and still has) the southernmost bridge on the Rhone. Very unusually, the Roman bridge was not fixed but consisted of a pontoon-style bridge of boats, with towers and drawbridges at each end. The boats were secured in place by anchors and were tethered to twin towers built just upstream of the bridge. This unusual design was a way of coping with the river's frequent violent floods, which would have made short work of a conventional bridge. Nothing now remains of the Roman bridge, which has been replaced by a more modern bridge near the same spot.

The city reached a peak of influence during the 4th and 5th centuries, when Roman Emperors frequently used it as their headquarters during military campaigns. In 395 it became the seat of the Praetorian Prefecture of the Gauls, governing the western part of the Western Empire: Gaul proper plus Hispania (Spain) and Armorica (Brittany).

It became a favorite city of Emperor Constantine I, who built baths there, substantial remains of which are still standing. His son, Constantine II, was born in Arles. Usurper Constantine III declared himself emperor in the West (407--411) and made Arles his capital in 408. SOURCE :WIKIPEDIA

A large part of the Camargue is located on the territory of the commune, making it the largest commune in Metropolitan France in terms of territory (though Maripasoula, French Guiana is much larger. The city has a long history, and was of considerable importance in the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis. The Roman and Romanesque Monuments of Arles were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1981. The Dutch post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh lived in Arles in 1888-1889 and produced over 300 paintings and drawings during his time there. An international photography festival is held in the city since 1970. ( source Wikipedia )
