Poitiers is a classic French provincial city. Capital of the Poitou area of western France, and county-town of the Vienne department, it is a historic city that has conserved much of its old world charm. A traditional stopping spot on the route from Paris to Bordeaux, southwest France and Spain, it is a city that has catered for passing travellers since Roman times.
Defensively located on a hilltop beside a main route, Roman Poitiers, known as Limonum, was one of the major cities in western Gaul, and possibly the capital of the area; however little remains of classical Roman Poitiers. On the other hand, Poitiers is home to one of the oldest churches in Europe, the fourth century Baptistry, built during the Gallo-Roman period. Today a small archaeological museum, the Baptistry is decorated inside with some of the earliest mural paintings in France.
It was in the Middle Ages that Poitiers really came into its own again; and there are several impressive buildings dating from this time. Most important is the church of Notre Dame la Grande, which was consecrated in the year 1086. With its ornately decorated facade, Notre Dame la Grande is one of the finest examples of western French Romanesque architecture.
Poitiers also has a fine early gothic cathedral, built in the 12th century on the instigation of King Henry II of England and his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine. The cathedral has some beautiful mediaeval stained glass windows. There are two other interesting mediaeval churches in Poitiers, the church of Saint Hilaire, a classic but unusual 11th century Romanesque church, and the church of Sainte Radegonde, which has an interesting crypt
Poitiers' main museum is the Musée Sainte Croix, close to the town centre. Housed in a modern building from the 1970s, the museum has a collection of historic and archaeological artefacts, as well as an art gallery with a collection of mostly French paintings and sculpture from the 19th and 20th centuries, including works by Rodin, Bonnard and Sisley.
While the sights and monuments of old Poitiers illustrate the city's historic past, the same cannot be said for the most popular tourist attraction just ourside Poitiers. This is the Futuroscope, a future-themed hi-tech theme park located at Jaunay Clan, one of the northern suburbs of Poitiers. Opened in 1984, the Futuroscope has grown from a few futuristic pavillions round an Imax cinema, to become the world's most sophisticated cinema theme park. It has giant screens, IMAX and 3-D and 4-D shows, some of them using technology that is unique in the world, all in all over twenty future-themed attractions. Among the latest attractions is a high-tech aquatic evening show by Cirque du Soleil, that started in Feb 2016.

Places to see in ( Poitiers - France ) Church of Notre Dame la Grande
Notre-Dame la Grande is a Roman Catholic church in Poitiers, France. Having a double status, collegial and parochial, it forms part of the Catholic diocese of Poitiers. The west front adorned with statuary is recognised as a masterpiece of Romanesque religious art. The walls inside the church are painted.
The district was already populated in Roman times. The ancient vestiges of a brick and rectangular stone construction can be located near the gutter on the northern wall of the current church.
The church is mentioned in the 10th century, under the name of Sancta Maria Maior, referring to the Romanesque church of the same name. Its position next to the Palace of the Counts of Poitou-Dukes of Aquitaine (current law courts of Poitiers), is certainly significant as from the political point of view, the bishops of Poitiers were barons of Poitou.
The whole of the building was rebuilt in the second half of the 11th century, in the period of High Romanesque, and inaugurated in 1086 by the future Pope Urban II. The plan of the church is composed of a central nave with aisles according to a frequent plan in Romanesque architecture of Poitou. The interior has the effect of a church agora on just one plane. The barrel vault has a slightly flattened silhouette, whereas the aisles are covered with a groined vault. Outside, the aisles were covered with a terrace punt
The Romanesque frescoes do not survive apart from those in the apse vault above the choir and in the crypt. Above the choir one can see an uncommon portrayal of the apocalypse: the Virgin and Child are shown in a mandorla, Christ is in majesty on the vault, between a circle and a square, then the Lamb of God is shown in a circle. All around, under the arches are the Twelve Apostles seated, as on the facade.
The church was refurnished after the Revolution. Thus, one finds there a Baroque pulpit carved from wood in the 17th century, coming from the convent, two bronze lecterns of the 16th century. The statue of Our Lady of the Keys dated from the end of the 16th or beginning of the 17th century. The tradition says that it is a copy of the miraculous statue, destroyed by the Huguenots in 1562.
Adam, Eve and Nebuchadnezzar II: above the door, a panel of high reliefs can be seen: this illustrates passages from the Bible. The selected scenes, taken from both Testaments, tell the Annunciation and the Incarnation of God on earth in the person of Jesus Christ to save humanity. From left to right may be seen the original sin, Nabuchodonosor King of Babylon, the prophets Daniel, Moses, Isaiah and Jeremiah.
In the year 1202, the English besieged the city of Poitiers. The mayor's clerk promised to deliver the city to them, on Easter Day, by providing them with the keys to the city in exchange for a large sum of money. In the night, the clerk went to the room of the mayor to steal the keys, but they had disappeared.

Poitiers in Frankreich (Region Nouvelle Aquitaine) ist eine junge Stadt, aber auch eine Stadt mit viel Geschichte. Gerde einmal eine Stunde und 16 Minuten benötigen die schnellsten TGV-Züge von Paris nach Poitiers. Somit ist Poitiers ein ideales Ausflugsziel ab Paris. Außerdem ist Poitiers bei einer Reise von Paris nach Bordeaux oder an den Atlantik auf jeden Fall einen Zwischenstopp wert.
Für mich ist Poitiers einer der Geheimtipps für eine Frankreich Reise. Die Stadt mit ihrem historischen Stadtkern ist ein wenig bekanntes Reiseziel, aber ein wahres Schmuckkasterl. Poitiers besticht durch seine besonderen historischen Sehenswürdigkeiten, allen voran die vielen Kirchen und der Herzogspalast. Die Geschichte der Stadt ist eng mit Eleonore von Aquitanien verbunden.
Zugleich ist Poitiers auch eine lebenswerte und lebendige Studentenstadt. In den Altstadtgassen und auf den Plätzen kannst Du in Cafés, Restaurants und Bars das Leben genießen. Der Parc de Blossac und die Îlot Tison sind beliebte Treffpunkte im Grünen. Und in der Guinguette Pictave kommt Urlaubsstimmung auf.

The town hall of Poitiers is a municipal building of Second Empire style in Poitiers . It is located on the Place du Maréchal-Leclerc , former Place d'Armes. Built between 1869 and 1875 , the town hall of Poitiers is the end point of a vast project of urbanization of the city center, started with the arrival of the train in 1851 and the construction of the prefecture between 1864 and 1869 . The decision was also made to build a broad boulevard of Haussmann inspiration , connecting the new departmental building to the Place d'Armes: this new axis, now rue Victor Hugo , was to act as a triumphal way opening onto the new town hall.
Previously, the town hall was installed at the échevinage. Antoine-Gaétan Guérinot is chosen as architect. Work begun in 1869 , interrupted during the War of 1870 , will not be completed until 1875. By order of 29 October 1975, the facades, roofs and the grand staircase are inscribed as historical monuments.
Due to lack of funding, the sets planned in the project were not fully completed. The building remains a major monument representative of the tastes of the Second Empire . The majestic facade is in neo-renaissance style , according to the style Napoleon III , lover of architectural pastiches (a neo-Gothic project was also proposed and rejected). This neo-renaissance style implicitly refers to the city hall of Paris , and is frequently found in city halls of the same period (for example Niort or Saint-Jean d'Angély ). In Poitiersthe building was to house not only the city administration, but also the municipal museum of fine arts that left in 1974 . The main façade presents a theatrical composition, according to an organization inspired by the xviii th century , which opposes the side walls and the back cover, much more austere. Breakthrough wide windows with double horizontal rails, it is punctuated by columns and pilasters ringed in the manner of the architect of the xvi th century , Philibert de l'Orme .
This theatrical staircase depicts the visitor's ascent to the loggia. From this balcony, it can in turn see and be seen ... Thus, the shape of the building has as many social meanings as its decor. Several sculptures adorn the staircase: two allegorical caryatids by Louis-Ernest Barrias : Science and the Fine Arts , as well as the busts of the mayors of the city of Poitiers, contemporaries of the construction: Olivier Bourbeau and Arsène Orillard, both due to the sculptor Pierre-Amédée Brouillet.
The hall of honor, former ballroom, retains an inlaid parquet with the coat of arms of the city. The stained glass is the work of Steinheil and represents Aliénor d'Aquitaine confirming the charter of commune in 1199. Among the aldermen on the right, we recognize another portrait: that of the architect Antoine-Gaétan Guérinot who looks at the viewer. The ceiling is adorned by a painting by Jean-Baptiste Brunet : Du Guesclin delivering Poitiers of the English in 1372 (1885).
The former hall of the municipal council, today called hall of the coat of arms, is adorned with a ceiling painted by Emile Bin . It represents the city of Poitiers , in the guise of a woman rewarding Labor, accompanied by the Force, Justice, Charity and Peace. On both sides, the allegories of the Poitou rivers are painted: La Boivre and Le Clain (1881-1882). These two figures are placed in relation to the central table, according to the real topography of the rivers: Clain in the east and Boivre in the west.

The ancient capital of Poitou
Poitiers has been known since ancient Roman times as the capital of the Pictons, a Gallic people, called Limonum. Christianized early in Roman times, it was a stronghold of orthodoxy under its first bishop, St. Hilary of Poitiers (4th cent.), and became a great religious center of Gaul. The city was a residence of Visigoth kings. Later on it was captured (507) by the Franks led by king Clovis I. In 732, one of the pivotal battle was held between Poitiers and Tours when Charles Martel defeted the Muslim Saracens army and ceased their further invasion in Europe. Poitiers was often sacked by the Normans in the 9th century.
Poitiers fell twice under English rule (1152–1204, 1360–72). In this magnificent city Eleanor of Aquitaine had her brilliant court and In 1152 she married the future King Henry II of England in the Saint-Pierre Cathedral. It was here, in Poitiers in 1356, Edward the Black Prince defeated and captured John II of France and his son, Philip the Bold of Burgundy. King Charles VII had his court in Poitiers from 1423 to 1436 while Paris was kept under English rule between 1418 and 1436. In the Wars of Religion (1562–98) the city was besieged (1568) by the Huguenots without any success. In 1577 the Edict of Poitiers was issued to guarantee religious freedom in France.
Nowadays Poitiers is known as an industrial, agricultural, educational and communication center including metallurgy, machine building, printing, and the manufacture of chemicals and electrical equipment. The university of Poitiers, founded by Charles VII in 1431 is one of the finest educational centres in the world keeping memories about great authors and scientists such as René Descartes, Joachim du Bellay and François Rabelais and many others.
