In this video, I want to highlight the incredible work of Birds Canada volunteers in protecting nesting birds, as well as show photographers how to improve their practices and demonstrate how to photograph birds with the least amount of impact possible, keeping the interests of the birds first. For example, all videography and photography in this video was shot at 700mm focal length and usually cropped, so I'm not as close as I appear.

THE MOST MISUNDERSTOOD BIRD IN AUSTRALIA

If you live in the United States or Europe, you may think that plovers are merely a harmless wading bird. You may even have positive thoughts associated with them, such as the beginning of the warm seasons. If you are an Australian, you’ll beg to differ.
Plovers have had a reputation for being an aggressive swooping bird that will stop at nothing to defend their territory. Some would say that they are even worse than magpies. But do they really deserve the reputation that they have? In this video, we’ll discover the truth about plovers.

10 Most Beautiful Beaches in Florida [Beware of #5... Because its too good]

✅Best-Selling travel gear
????Booking.com Deals

Beaches along the Atlantic coast are more popular with surfers and water sports enthusiasts but tend to be slightly less crowded than their gulf counterparts. Tourists can find every type of beach environment in Florida, from palm-lined, activity-filled boardwalks to secluded state parks with diverse plant and animal life.

Welcome to ThingsToDo Channel, we publish new content everyday so be sure to subscribe to our channel and ring the bell to get notified about our latest videos.

Here are 10 beaches in the state of Florida you shouldn’t miss.

Bahia Honda.

Bahia Honda State Park is located at mile marker 37 in the Florida Keys, near Marathon. This park offers one of Florida's most spectacular beaches and, since it is in a state park, it is left in a natural state.

Miami Beach.

Miami Beach may be one of the more crowded areas, but for those looking for a complete city beach scene, this is the place to be. Miami Beach covers more than seven miles of shoreline, and on hot days, the sand is packed with sunbathers, and onlookers cruise slowly past in their cars to see what's happening..

Fort DeSoto.

A naturalist's favorite, Fort DeSoto State Park offers an exceptional stretch of beach, which has been preserved as a county park. The park consists of five keys (islands), which total more than 1,100 acres, home to not only white-sand beaches but also a myriad of vital ecological zones, including delicate mangrove swamps.

Clearwater Beach.

On the Gulf Coast, Clearwater Beach offers an excellent escape from the city rush of nearby Tampa and is one of the best beaches along the western shores of Florida. This wide band of soft sand is excellent for walking, parking a beach chair, and swimming.

Cocoa Beach.

Cocoa Beach sits on Florida's Atlantic shore just south of Cape Canaveral, nicknamed the space coast. Just an hour drive from the theme park capital of the state and the closest beach, Cocoa Beach is a popular day trip for families staying in one of Orlando's many resorts.

Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Fort Lauderdale Beach in some ways resembles Miami Beach, backed by a boardwalk lined with hotels and restaurants. The beach is the center of the tourist area in Fort Lauderdale, where people come to soak up the sun, walk or rollerblade along the boardwalk, play games, and enjoy the view. The beach and boardwalk are also host to various events and entertainment, from street performances to concerts. Two of the beach's seven miles is heavily staffed with lifeguards, which are on duty year-round.

Venice Beach.

Venice Beach is well-known for small prehistoric sharks' teeth that can be found in the fine sand. Many people come here to search for these teeth, which come from ancient sharks and have decomposed on the seafloor. Beachgoers can also catch sight of wildlife here, including dolphins, turtles, and various shorebirds. Beach amenities include concessions and a picnic area, volleyball courts, and boardwalks, as well as conveniences like free parking. Venice Beach is also a popular family beach, and Venice Public Fishing Pier is a great place to stroll for a fantastic view.

Fort Myers.

Fort Myers Beach is for people who are looking for a true beach town atmosphere. It is located on the shores of Estero island, which is connected to the mainland by bridges. Fort Myers beach is full of excellent resorts, which are popular with couples and families alike, and it is known for being one of the best beaches in Florida for dolphin-watching. The soft sand stretches on for miles, but the most popular area is by the pier, where beachgoers sit under umbrellas or enjoy a game of beach volleyball.

St. George Island State Park.

Like all Florida state parks, St. George Island is left undisturbed and undeveloped. This long stretch of white-sand beach offers a stunning location for sunbathing and swimming, as well as miles of pristine beach for shelling and beachcombing. There are also camping facilities, boat ramps, and picnicking areas. Facing Apalachicola Bay, this is also a fantastic place for dolphin-spotting, as well as enjoying the wildlife that nests in the sand, including sea turtles and birds like the black skimmer, least tern, and snowy plover.

Panama City Beach.

Located in the Florida Panhandle, Panama City Beach is a popular destination during the warmer months. The incredible white-sand beach runs on for 27 miles, providing a playground for all kinds of activities. There are many local businesses that offer exciting things to do, including Jet Ski and boat rentals, paddle-boarding, diving, fishing charters, and sightseeing cruises.

Sorry I did not see any of the adorable little birds on this visit to the site but the beach scenes are nice

Highway 101 snowy plover habitat Oregon Dunes National Recreation area

The western snowy plover, a subspecies of the widely distributed snowy plover, is a small shore bird that winters and breeds along the pacific coast of the United States. Pale brown on top with a white underside, these plovers blend in well with their sandy habitat, and have dark black patches on their head and sides during the breeding season. To attract a mate, males dig a shallow nest in the sand and bow to the female they are trying to impress. Snowy plover pairs typically raise 3 young per nest, and within a week of hatching the female finds a new mate, leaving the male to care for the young hatchlings, though females will usually help the male with the last brood of the season. Almost as soon as they hatch, they are foraging on their own for small beach invertebrates such as sand fleas. Western snowy plovers hunt by sight, running along the beach and stopping to peck around in the wet sand or tide-cast kelp.
In recent years, much of the beach habitat that is so important for nesting western snowy plovers has been degraded, resulting in a decline in numbers. These birds require bare beaches with unstable sand and pebble substrate to build their nests on, but the introduction of non-native European beach grass to many western beaches has significantly changed the habitat for the worse. In addition to reduced nesting habitat, increased flow of human visitors to beaches can result in smashed or abandoned nests. Future threats include the projected rising of sea levels due to global warming, which will further reduce plover nesting habitat. In order to preserve these vulnerable birds, it’s vital that humans try to lessen their impact on sensitive beach habitats, and that we protect the untouched habitat that is left.
When a predator approaches the nest, adult western snowy plovers will feign an injury to distract the predator from their hatchlings.
Adult western snowy plovers never feed their young, but instead teach them to forage just hours after hatching.

IAT: Plover River Segment

We hiked this segment out and back. The video is of the way out, starting at the southern parking lot and heading north, about 6.1 miles. WE LOVE THIS SEGMENT! Different terrains, water, some good hills, wildflowers popping up… Lovely!

The GoPro Time Warp video was shot at 10x speed, hence the longer video. I paired it with relaxing music because, well, that’s what I like to hear when watching these vids. For years I was looking for videos of trails we wanted to hike. I didn’t want the step-by-step saga of someone’s trail hiking, but a general overview. Now I’m watching these and loving them, reliving the gorgeous trails we’ve hiked.

Years ago I wanted to see trails like these before heading out, and now we’re actually making the videos. Hope you enjoys them, a small, relaxing break in your day. Maybe a preview of trails you want to hike. Or just something to inspire you to get outside and explore in your own neck of the woods. All good!

Enjoy!

North Dakota Birding Road Trip - Follow Along!

Birding Road Trip Adventure to North Dakota!
On Saturday, June 24th, I plan to leave and head north to the upper peninsula and take Highway 2 west all the way to western North Dakota. North Dakota is one of two states I have never visited, and I’ve always wanted to go birding in the grasslands. I plan to visit, lost Wood, national wildlife refuge, and Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Target lifers include Chestnut-collared Longspur, and Baird’s Sparrow along with possible Sage Grouse and if I venture into Wyoming, maybe a Mountain Plover. Of course, there are many other interesting birds along the way that are not life for us for me, but our ones I still want to see, including Long-billed Curlew!
In my travels, I plan to stop in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and at Sax-Zim bog north of Duluth, Minnesota. On the way back, I plan to stop at the Black Hills of South Dakota.
