PIROT by TRAIN (subtitled)

Pirot is a town in southeastern Serbia and it dates from Roman era. The river Nisava divides it into two districts: Tijabara and Pazar, but three bridges connect them, named as Gazela, Golemi and the Bridge of Love. The Bridge of Love will be filmed next time when we go to Pirot.

Museum of Ponisavlje is in old part of the town. It is placed in family house of far-famed merchant from Pirot, Hristo Jovanovic who lived in the 19th century there and he was very respectfull in that time, even among Turks. In that time, this part of Serbia was under the rule of Otomans.

The interior of the museum is filled with items from the collections of the Museum of Ponisavlje, as well as Pirot kilims (traditional rugs) and other antiquities that Hristo Jovanovic left to the museum. Serbian movie “Zona Zamfirova” was partly shot there.

Since we were on Sunday in Pirot, the only day when the museum does not work, we will film it next time when we go to Pirot.

Official web site of the museum and facebook page:

The hard cheese from Pirot is famous all over the world. It is hand made, following the traditional recipe and in the authentic way. On every day bases, experienced people in Dairy school of Pirot work on its production supported by the hard working pupils of the school who are trying to perfect their knowledge of cheese making. Specific taste, quality and the way it is made are some of the features of this specialty, which found its place on the list of intangible cultural heritage of The Republic of Serbia thus becoming the product protected by geographical indication.

The web site of Dairy school of Pirot:

Pirot kilim is another famous product of this area, sought for around the world and it is not just a simple rung. It is often refferred as one of the National symbols of Serbia, and not just because of abundance of beautiful motifs and ornaments, the fact that they have two identical sides, various symbols that carry different meanings and diverse purposes of use, as well as the long and complex making process. Kilims are concidered with magical features, with their patterns, colors and a way of their making. They are made for good health, well being of the owner, happiness and luck in love, business success, against bad spells, negative energy and magic. Women of Pirot have been making these kilims from the ancient times, and the knowledge of how to make them was transferred from one generation to another. Kilims are exclusively made in a traditional way and only those kind of kilims are considered to be authentic products that find its place, along with Pirotski kackavalj (hard cheese from Pirot), on the list of intangible cultural heritage of The Republic of Serbia.

Here is the web address of the cooperative for carpet making and souvenirs from Pirot if you need more information:

Pirotsko kale or Momchilo’s Fortress is a fort made in the 14th century, which is thought to have been built during the reign of Prince Lazar.

This is how we experienced the Fortress:

Archaeological research of the Middle part of the city of Pirot revealed that there was a settlement, on the same place, 5000 years ago. There were discovered traces from Eneolithic and Iron Age, Antiquity, Early Byzantium and the Middle Ages. Ever since the Middle Ages to the first half of the 20th century this fortress has always been used for military purposes. It is declared as Monument of Culture of Great Importance and it is protected by the Republic of Serbia. Some sequences of the movie “Battle of Kosovo” were shot there. It is open every day from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. and the entrance is free.

On this page you may virtualy tour the Fortress, under the title “Panorama”:

EUROVELO 13 - Ep1- Romania to Turkey series starts here! ○ Drobeta Turnu, Romania to Pirot, Serbia

THIS EPISODE (We leave the Eurovelo 6 to join EV13!)
We leave Drobeta Turnu Severin, Romania, and head over the border to Negotin in Serbia, home to our fave accommodation yet. So good that we stayed for another night and had a recovery/admin day off! From here we cycled to Zajecar via forgotten in time little villages with zero places to eat. Then we tackled the toughest cycling conditions of the entire cycle tour en route to Knjazevac, mostly off road and very hilly. Plus with a slight hangover...
From here it was a beautiful smooth ride mostly downhill to Pirot, our last night in Serbia before Bulgaria.

DETAILS
Drobeta Turnu Severin (Rom) - Hotel Corona €35 bb (treat night!) 8 - excellent but bad breakfast
Negotin (Serbia) - Campsite for Cyclists and Adventurers (we stayed in one of their studio rooms with kitchen) - €16 no bb -10. Simply the best. Hospitality was unreal, great value, free tennis!
Zajecar - Hotel Serbija - €23 bb - 7. Very run down rooms but great restaurant and food although too many smokers at breakfast and dinner.
Knjazevac - Hotel Timock bb - €26 bb - 7. Clean tidy quiet room, bad breakfast. Forgetful, good for a big rest which was needed...!
Pirot- Booking.com apartment with kitchen €20 - 5/10 - only a hob, no other kitchen appliances i.e kettle!

The FORTESS in PIROT - PIROTSKO KALE (MOMCHILO's TOWN) - subtitled

Momchil's fortress is a medieval castle situated in Pirot, Serbia and belongs among 10 most beautiful Serbian military fortifications. This fortification was built during the rule of Prince Lazar in the 14th century.

We went to Pirot by the train and here is our view of that town's offer:

In that time Pirot was a strategically important city on the eastern frontier of the state, located on the way of Ottoman raids, so the fortification was built by Prince Lazar by the right bank of Bistrica River on an isolated rock, by Sarlah Hill. In the Fortress were based the army, nobles, and administration as well as refugee civilians.

Relatively small, the Fortress comprises of 3 parts: Upper, Mid, and Lower city. The Upper city is built under Lazar. Donzon tower and the entry gate are incorporated in this part. The Mid city was built under Despot Stefan Lazarevic and is of an ellipsoid shape, descending in a stepwise manner towards the foothill. The Lower city was built by Turks in the 18th century, towards the plain which descends stepwise from southern, eastern, and northern sides of the Upper city. River, acting as a natural defender, is flowing there, which made entering the city available from one side only.

The fort was used for military purposed until the first half of the 20th century. This fortification has been wrongly called Momchilo’s Town, according to the belief that the city was built by the duke of Southern Rhodope, Momchilo. But, he lived in the first half of the 14th century, he participated in Byzantine civil wars during which he was awarded the title of a despot, and he was killed in 1345 in the siege of Greek city Peritheorion. Recent archeological excavations proved that the city was built in the second half of the 14th century, which disqualifies Momchilo as its founder.

Archeological excavations in the area of The Pirot Fortress discovered that a settlement predating Antiquity existed there.

Researchers have discovered that during the reign of Emperor Constantine in the 2nd and the 3rd century a settlement back then known as Turres was the main stop on route to Nis (Naisus) to Sofia (Serdik). This was not only a tower or a station for changing the wagons, but a serious settlement serving as a market between the two cities. In the radius of circa 500 meters there was an ancient suburb with a necropolis where the remains of pottery and coins were found.

The Pirot Fortress is registered as a cultural monument of great value. Through its restoration, the visitors will be able to learn about the complete history of this place, spanning across two millennia.

INTERESTING FACT: One part of the movie “Battle of Kosovo” was shot in this fortress.

On this page you may virtualy tour the Fortress, under the title “Panorama”:
