Calaveras became a State Park in 1931 to preserve the North Grove of giant sequoias. This grove includes the Discovery Tree, the first Sierra redwood noted by Augustus T. Dowd in 1852. This area has been a major tourist attraction ever since, and is considered the longest continuously operated tourist facility in California.

Over the years, other parcels of mixed conifer forests have been added to the park.

The Park also houses two main campgrounds with a total of 129 campsites, six picnic areas and hundreds of miles of established trails.

Activities include cross-country skiing, evening ranger talks, numerous interpretive programs, environmental educational programs, junior ranger programs, hiking, mountain biking, bird watching and summer school activities for school children.Dogs: Dogs are welcome in the park on leash in developed areas like picnic sites, campgrounds, roads and fire roads (dirt). Dogs are not allowed on the designated trails, nor in the woods in general.

Calaveras Big Trees State Park is a state park of California, United States, preserving two groves of giant sequoia trees. It is located 4 miles (6.4 km) northeast of Arnold, California in the middle elevations of the Sierra Nevada. It has been a major tourist attraction since 1852, when the existence of the trees was first widely reported, and is considered the longest continuously operated tourist facility in California

They also had lots of small gas engines many of which were Hit & Miss Engines and most were running. During the video you will see many tractors driving around and even see some steam tractors driving around. They also had some farming demonstrations. It was a fun tractor show. Pyramid State Park (10 Mile Loop)

This is scenic walk through of Pyramid State Park in Pinckneyville Illinois. It’s one of the few parks that allow hike-in camping which is great for backpacking adventures. The park is almost entirely made up of land that was strip mined for coal. This was my first time through this park and my first hike after winter hibernation. The undulating terrain (small peaks and valleys) was brutal in the latter part of the hike, but it was mostly due to me being out of shape. The scenery is a bit bland (season) but I can tell it will be exploding with green in the next few weeks. I wanted to document this hike since there is not many videos of the trails online. At the end of this video I posted the site map. There are a few more trails I want to hit in this park so stay tuned.

Tour of Small Town Petersburg, Illinois in 360° Video

Filmed on Monday, October 10th, 2022, I drive around the small town of Petersburg, Illinois. I drive through the town square and a few of the neighborhood streets.

Petersburg is a city in and the county seat of Menard County, Illinois, United States, on the bluffs and part of the floodplain overlooking the Sangamon River. It is part of the Springfield, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 2,260 at the 2010 census, and 2,226 at a 2018 estimate. Petersburg is located approximately two miles north of New Salem, the original settlement where Abraham Lincoln first settled, as he started his career.

The town began as a planned community organized by real estate speculators Peter Lukins (for whom the town is named) and George Warburton. Abraham Lincoln worked as the surveyor who first mapped, measured and help to divide lots on the land. Petersburg quickly grew, due to an advantageous placement on the river, becoming the county seat in the 1830s and eventually drawing off the population of New Salem, which was abandoned in 1840.

Many of the lush Victorian-era homes built by early wealthy inhabitants still stand on the bluffs of Petersburg. The town itself takes great pride in these structures, which has even preserved some of the original cobblestone streets to complement the classical architecture.

Local legend has it that town's name came about when Peter Lukins and George Warburton, two notorious sots, argued over what to call it. The matter was allegedly settled over a game of cards, which Lukins is credited as winning. Most versions of the tale claim that Warburton had it in mind to name the village Georgetown. This story, though often told in the area, has not been historically verified. #driving #travel #drivingtour

Kunz Opera House and Antique Mall, Pinckneyville, IL

Video of The Opera House and Antique Mall in Pinckneyville taken from the 2002 -- 2006 era. During this time the Opera House remained vacant, with few visitors passing through, but it was in the summer of 2004 that the structure received a facelift with a new coat of paint. Here we see the final revitalization that this landmark enjoyed, the way I will remember it, in the better days of its final years.
