Which cities to see in Sicily - My itinerary

MY 8 DAYS ITINERARY AROUND SICILY AND AEOLIAN ISLANDS or a list of BEST CITIES TO VISIT IN SICILY

Day 1: Landing in Palermo, rent a car and spend the day in Cefalu (distance: 73km, 1h 13min). In the evening continue to Milazzo (135km, 1h 35min) which is right next to the ferry boat leaving for the Aeolian islands the following morning.
Day 2: Ferry trip from Milazzo to Vulcano. It’s the closest of the Aeolian Islands to mainland Sicily and makes an ideal day trip location.
Day 3: Start early from Milazzo to Taormina, spend the day getting lost in the medieval streets and admiring the Greek-Roman amphitheatre that overlooks volcano Etna. Continue your drive to Catania (duration: 54km, 50min) and spend the night there.
Day 4: Early morning for coffee in the main square and a glimpse of a typical Sicilian fish market in Catania. You won’t be disappointed! Continue to Syracuse (distance: 67km, 52min) and enjoy one of the most beautiful Sicilian cities!
Day 5: Syracuse to Piazza Armerina (distance: 147km, 1h 43min) walk around the small city-rain or sun, you won’t be disappointed. Don’t forget to visit Villa Romana in the suburbs.
Day 6: Piazza Armerina to Palermo or Monreale
Day 7-8: Visit the iconic sights of Palermo. Also if you haven't jet - eat, breathe, live pizza and pasta!

I wish you all a fabulous trip!

This is the Itinerary I created for our road trip around Sicily last November and it turned out perfect!
Nevertheless Sicily has so much more to offer than we squeezed in this short 8 days vacation. If you plan to visit in the Summer, I strongly suggest to go see the Turkish steps (Scala dei Turci) and if you're all about temples don't miss out on the southwest of the Island.

If you'd like to see more about the cities we've visited, the places we stayed at and the food we ate, let me know in the comments :)

Piazza Armerina , Caltagirone

Two small towns in the mountains of Sicily. Piazza Armerina - the town itself nestles on hills and was built in two parts - first by the Saracens in the 10th century and then developed to the southeast in the 15th and then again the 17th centuries.
Caltagirone - Virtually all buildings in the old town are decorated with ceramic tiles, shops spill their delightfully crafted wares onto the pavements and the effect is one of multichromatic vivacity.
The highlight is undoubtedly the 142 steps of the Scalinata di Santa Maria del Monte that connect the lower town with the older upper town. The upright of each step is decorated with ceramic tiles, offering a colourful alternative to the grey lava stone of the horizontal parts

The Charming Center of Sicily! Enna & Piazza Armerina (Villa Romana del Casale)

In our FINAL Sicilian episode, we visit Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina and the gorgeous city of Enna! Villa Romana del Casale is a 4th century AD Roman Villa that houses some of the most incredible – and compelling – series of Roman mosaics anywhere in Europe. Right in the center of Sicily lies Enna, known until 1926 as Castrogiovanni, and towering above the surrounding countryside, it has earned the nicknames ‘Belvedere’ and ‘Ombelico di Sicilia’, which literally translates to the Navel of Sicily!

PIAZZA ARMERINA, SICILY

The next stop in our Sicily tour was Piazza Armerina, which was just about 15 min drive away from Villa Romana del Casale. This event occurred on a nice weather of September 6, 2019, Day#7. Most travelers skipped this town after the Villa, but we stayed on for the night out of curiosity. Thank goodness we did as we had one of the most memorable moments in this visit. Although there were not a whole lot of tourist attractions to see here, we ventured on a surreal walk around the neighborhood. We climbed the narrow streets up to the charming medieval back alleys and found its beautiful cathedral, a Spanish castle, old buildings and some great views over the city. Friendly locals, esp. seniors, congregated in cafes or parks. Toward the evening, this place turned eerie and dark. Bags of garbage hanging on the wall and/or from a balcony waiting for routine pickup. The night was an absolute joy where we sat with the locals in watching a free street concert. Next stop - hopping small towns - Caltagirone, Vizzini, Monterosso Almo

#PiazzaArmerina #Sicily

Piazza Armerina (Ciazza in the local Gallo-Italian language, Chiazza in Sicilian) is an Italian municipality in the free municipal consortium of Enna in Sicily. The territory of Piazza Armerina rises on a hill in the southern Erei mountains, in the central-eastern part of Sicily, at an altitude of 697 m. Until 1927 it was the capital of an extensive district and sub-prefecture seat, when the province of Enna had not yet been established, to which it was incorporated.
It is an ancient medieval town with a valuable Baroque and Norman historical center. On its territory there is the Roman Villa del Casale with its famous mosaics, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. City of art, already called Urbs Opulentissima, with a strong tourist attraction for its important archaeological, historical, artistic and natural heritage, known as the City of Mosaics and the Palio dei Normanni.

Ferries to Sicily:

Piazza Armerina is an Italian comune in the province of Enna of the autonomous island region of Sicily. The city of Piazza (as it was called before 1862) originated during the Norman domination in Sicily (11th century), but the area was inhabited since prehistoric times. The city was flourishing also during Roman times, as showed by the notable mosaics at the patrician Villa Romana del Casale.
Cathedral of Piazza Armerina.
[edit] Main sights

The town is famous chiefly for its Roman mosaics in the Villa Romana del Casale, about 3 km to the southwest. It has a range of significant architecture dating from medieval through the 18th century. The discovery and excavation of the well-preserved, highly refined mosaics has helped attract tourists.

The medieval history of the city is manifest in some of its houses, which show Norman or Gothic architecture. The main landmarks include a range of architectural styles:

* The massive Baroque Cathedral (17th-18th century), built on the 15th-century foundations of a former church, from which the bell tower was taken and reused.[1]. Also original to the 15th c. church are the Catalan-Gothic style windows on the left side. The dome dates from 1768. The façade has a notable portal with spiral columns by Leonardo De Luca. The interior, with a single large nave, houses the Madonna della Vittoria (Madonna of the Victory). The Byzantine icon is traditionally associated with the banner donated by the Pope to Roger I of Sicily during the Council of Melfi. The cathedral has an unusual two-sided crucifix by an unknown artist. The Diocesan Museum holds reliquiaries, articles of silverware, monstrances and other religious art works.
* The nearby Palazzo Trigona, house of the wealthy family who commissioned the church.
* The Church of Fundrò, known also as St. Roch, with a carved tufa portal.
* The nearby Palazzo di Città (1613), characterized by a fresco ceiling by Salvatore Martorana.
* The massive Aragonese Castle (1392-96). It is square in shape, with square towers.
* The church of San Giovanni Evangelista (14th century), with an interior covered with frescos by Guglielmo Borremans and assistants.
* The baroque church of Sant'Anna (18th century), with its original sinuos facade inspired by the buildings of Borromini.
* The church of St. Martin of Tours (1163).
* The church of Santa Maria di Gesù (16th century), now abandoned.

Outside the city is the ancient church of the Priorato di Sant'Andrea (1096), founded by Count Simon of Butera, a nephew of Roger I of Sicily. It has important medieval frescoes.

Italy’s Best Piazza?

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
Begin your day in the center of Rome at Campo de Fiori outdoor fruit and vegetable market, one of Italy’s best piazzas -- maybe the best! Campo de Fiori is teeming with friendly people, tasty fruits, vibrant colors, animated conversations, varieties of vegetables, sweet smells, energetic vendors, local shoppers, and atmosphere galore. This setting is perfect, surrounded by very old buildings with cobbled pedestrian lanes leading off in all directions into a great neighborhood we shall explore next. This friendly and lively piazza is one of the major focal points of the city, just three blocks south of Piazza Navona.
Arriving any time in the morning is good, but earlier is better. Campo de Fiori makes a great start for our walk: it is the only main attraction opening by 6am and it is simply a wonderful morning scene. This magical Campo has multiple personalities, changing character throughout the day: Rome’s main veggie market in the morning, a ring of busy restaurants at lunch, peaceful in the afternoon, and a party scene at night.
Nearly all the vendors have worked here for years and know each other like family, making for a cooperative, communal attitude. Ladies traditionally do most of the trimming to get the produce ready for display, so watching their deft moves might give you a few ideas for speeding up your own food-prep techniques.
A special item that comes into season during the fall, usually October and September, is the truffle, the wonderful truffle of Italy. It’s quite expensive, perhaps $200 for a little piece, but more affordable as an ingredient of your meal in a good restaurant. The classic presentation is served freshly sliced onto a simple pasta dish with a plain oil or butter sauce, which allows the pungent, earthy truffle aroma to explode in your mouth. The finest truffles are the white variety from Piedmont, tastier than the more famous black French version.
Porcini mushroom is another specialty at the market, one of Italy’s unique wild foods offered primarily in the fall. These big fungi don’t travel well, so you generally don’t find them served fresh outside Italy. Most good restaurants in Rome will offer them in season, and the porcini mushroom is absolutely worth tasting, either as an ingredient in the pasta sauce or as a dish unto itself grilled to firm perfection. They have become so famous that some have been marginally cultivated in other parts of the world, and dried packets are widely available – but dried is nothing like the real thing.
The morning market is what makes the campo unique, so if you are an early bird trying to squeeze the max out of your Rome hours or someone waking up early from jet lag at the start of a trip, do consider coming here first thing in the morning, even as early as 6:00am when the vendors are just starting to set up their stands. In this pre-dawn bonus hour you will see all manner of oddball, wheeled devices being pushed, pedaled and driven into the still-dark piazza as merchants bring stands from their overnight storage in nearby warehouses. Crates of produce stacked high are delivered by tiny three-wheel trucks (more like overgrown mopeds). Umbrellas are raised, peaches arranged, white-smocked fish-vendors march in, conversations ring loud in the air with the fountains burbling and the antique lamp posts still shining in the dark blue, pre-dawn sky above. It is quite a free show.
It’s fun to just hang out and watch everybody getting set up for their morning’s work. By seven o’clock the vendors are fully open for business and the second act of this street theater has begun.
Don’t come too late because by mid-day most food stands have shut down -- the merchants have packed up their goods and pushed them back into the nearby warehouses for overnight storage. The center is clear, ready for the next act. Around noon it transforms into a popular luncheon piazza, encircled by a dozen outdoor restaurants which are fascinating to observe, and tasty, if rather touristic: fine for simple pizza, salad, pasta or drinks, and ideal for its people-watching atmosphere from an al fresco table. If you are hungry for excellent food, the adjacent lanes are sprinkled with better choices, such as Ditirambo, Costanza and Teatro di Pompeo.
The Campo de Fiore becomes a lively party scene in the evening when wine and beer flows like water and hundreds of people gather at the tables and stand in the plaza, chattering and laughing. It is beautifully lit, the fountains are going, restaurants are open, people are friendly and talkative, music is in the air, young and old share the space, and tourists are hard to find. It’s a very hip gathering spot for locals, hanging out, seeing and being seen. There are terrific cafés and bars all around the square -- drop in for just a drink or a complete meal at one of these busy spots, especially lively on weekend nights.

Roman Villa near Piazza Armerina, Sicily.

Our visit to the Villa Romana del Casale near Piazza Armerina Sicily.
13th May 2015 with Riviera Travel.

Roman Villa of the Casale, Piazza Armerina, Sicily

The Roman Villa in Piazza Armerina has the best preserved Roman floor tiles (mosaics) in the world. There are 63 rooms, 42 of which have extensively designed floor tiles. Most of the villa is under cover and you can't, for obvious reasons, walk on the tile floors. They have an extensive network of connecting walkways for us tourists. If you are facinated by floor tiles, this is the place to visit in Sicily.
