Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the #travel bug! We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. Lathrop State Park | Pinon Campground | Site 79 | Colorado
We headed south to Pinon Campground in Lathrop State Park - don't get this campground confused with Pinon Flats Campground located near Great Sand Dunes National Park. This state park has a lot of activities for everyone - playgrounds, swimming, boating, fishing, golf, mini golf, wildlife watching. It was a bit windy at times!
This campground/state park is located just a couple miles to the west of Walsenburg.
Approximate Elevation: 6,400 feet (1,950 meters)

Another highlight of the region is the Pont du Gard, a Roman aqueduct and UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is located near Nîmes in the Gard. The city of Nîmes is also a well-known tourist destination and is famous for its well-preserved Roman ruins, including the Maison Carrée and the Arena.

Coming Down Heart Attack Hill - Pinyon Mountain
How hard is Heart Attack Hill? About THIS hard.. Actually, Heartattack Hill (located on the Pinyon Mountain Trail in the Anza Borrego Springs area) is VERY intimidating. The top part of the hill is very steep (watch the spotter struggling to keep his footing for an idea of how steep) and to make it more interesting there are a couple of drop-offs and deep ruts. The hill is much worse for a two-door Jeep than 4-doors.
The key is going down SLOW and articulation. You MUST be in low-gear and your swaybar should be disconnected (or you should have an Antirock).. Jeeps or trucks with little/no articulation will pop-up the rear into the air when the front slides off the first ledge.
There are a couple of spots where no matter how slow you go or how hard you mash on the brake pedal, you just slide/go..
With some skill and a good spotter, it's no problem but it WILL keep your heart-rate up! Actually looks far worse standing at the bottom of the hill looking up than it does from behind the wheel looking down.

The Tijeras Pueblo Archeological Site, Tijeras New Mexico
In this weeks video we visit the Tijeras Pueblo Archeological site. I have passed by this location for years, and never stopped in to take a look.
Tijeras, New Mexico is located in Albuquerque's East Mountains, and this is the beginning of the scenic drive known as the Turquoise Trail that goes all the way to Santa Fe.
I was surprised to learn that there were no visible dwellings at this site, they are all located under the existing mound, or are buried in the dirt. The museum was closed during our visit.
It's a nice walk among the piñon trees, but your time is better spent visiting other ruins in and around Central New Mexico.
