The temple marks one end of the Ancient Khmer Highway from Angkor. As the enclosed area of 1020x580m is comparable with that of Angkor Wat, Phimai must have been an important city in the Khmer Empire. Most buildings are from the late 11th to the late 12th century, built in the Baphuon, Bayon and Angkor Wat style. However, even though the Khmer at that time were Hindu, the temple was built as a Buddhist temple,[1] since the inhabitants of the Khorat area had been Buddhists as far back as the 7th century. Inscriptions name the site Vimayapura (which means city of Vimaya), which developed into the Thai name Phimai.

The first inventory of the ruins was done in 1901 by the French geographer Etienne Aymonier. The site was put under Thai governmental protection by announcement in the Government Gazette, Volume 53, section 34, on September 27, 1936. Most of the restorations were done from 1964 to 1969 as a joint Thai-French project. The historical park, now managed by the Fine Arts Department, was officially opened by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on April 12, 1989.

In the aftermath of the fall of the Ayutthaya Kingdom in 1767, attempts were made to set up five separate states, with Prince Teppipit, a son of King Boromakot, attempting to establish Phimai as one, ruling over eastern provinces including Nakhon Ratchasima. As the weakest of the five, Prince Teppipit was the first to be defeated and was executed in 1768. Phimai had previously been an important town at the time of the Khom. The temple Prasat Hin Phimai, located in the center of the town, was one of the major Khom temples in ancient Thailand, connected with Angkor by an ancient Khom Highway, and oriented to face Angkor as its cardinal direction. The site is now protected as the Phimai Historical Park

Journey to Phimai Historical Park

On our way to the ancient city of Sukhothai we stopped at Phimai Historical Park located in the Nakhon Ratchasima province in Thailand. Phimai Temple was once connected with Angkor Wat in Cambodia by an ancient Khmer Highway. Most of the buildings on this site are from the late 11th and late 12th centuries. The site is now a protected historical site, and I definitely recommend you visit it if you're planning a drive north from Bangkok to Sukhothai or Petchabun.

Prasat Phimai - Phimai Historical Park- 11th Century Khmer Temple - Nakhon Ratchasima Thailand 2023

The Khmer Empire was a powerful Kingdom in South-East Asia. Its major architectural works (temples and sculptures) are located in present day Cambodia, where the capital of the empire was located. However, during long periods of time the Khmer ruled over parts of present day Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.

Like other major ethnic groups in the history of South-East Asia (the Thais, the Mons, The Chams) the Khmer are thought to have descended in the prehistoric period from the river valleys in Eastern Tibet and Southwest China. The Khmer appear first on the scene (in Chinese records) in the second half of the 6th century A.D. with the Kingdom known as Chenla.

Since the Khmer reigned for long periods over extended areas of present day Thailand, Thailand has a substantial number of important Khmer monuments on its territory, mainly in its Northeastern Region (such as Phonom Rung and Muang Tam in Buriram Province, Phimai in Nakhon Ratchasima province, Muang Singh in Kanchanaburi province). Any look around the old temples of Sukhothai, Lopburi and Ayutthaya will also reveal strong Khmer architectural influences.

Phimai historical park is the largest of all Khmer temples in Thailand, the rectangular complex measures over 1,000 meters long by almost 600 meters wide. It contains some of the finest examples of Khmer architecture in Thailand.

What makes this temple unique is that is constructed as a Buddhist temple, even though the Khmer who built it were Hindu.

Phimai, which is officially named Prasat Hin Phimai was built during the 11th and 12th century, during which time the area was part of the Khmer empire. It was constructed on the end of the ancient highway connecting it with Angkor (present day Siem Reap), with other Khmer temples like Muang Tum and Phanom Rung in between.

Phimai historical park was renovated during the second half of the 1960’s. It is placed on UNESCO’s tentative list for future listing as a World Heritage Site.

The temple complex is well worth a visit. If you come plan on spending a few hours walking around and marveling at the history and ingenuity of the Khmer.

Phimai Historical Park Korat

The Phimai historical park is the biggest Khmer stone ruin site in the town of Phimai district, Nakhon Ratchasima province (Korat).

I found a bit strange that the relic point is located right in the middle of Phimai medium size town and this made you feel like the inside of this historical compound is really an ancient work of its own.,like someone or something transported you back to the glory time of Khmer era when a big empire build a road system from the famous Angkor Wat to here .

Phimai Night Market Walking Street - The Faith Of Phimai Festival - November 2023

A special night market promoting the Phimai Historical Park. Set up in the old town of Phimai this night market has a little bit of everything.

Near the entrance to Prasat Phimai it offers a great activity for the whole family after seeing the 11th century Khmer temple. Every year in November the historical park lights up with a sound and dance show to promote the park and area.

The market has hundreds of food and clothing vendors as well as countless other activities for the whole family. This market is very popular for the locals as well as tourists and offers a huge variety of local street foods and snacks.

I show you what to expect from this market. It is part of what life is like in Thailand and what makes every day an adventure. In this market there are treats from noodles to sweet deserts.

Khorat | Phi Mai | Thailand

Nakhon Ratchasima (Thai: นครราชสีมา) is one of the four major cities of Isan, known as the big four of Isan. The city is commonly known as Khorat a shortened form of its name.

Khorat is at the western edge of the Korat Plateau. Historically, it once marked the boundary between Lao and Siamese territory. It is the gateway to the Lao-speaking northeast (Isan).

The Phimai historical park (Thai: ปราสาทหินพิมาย,Khmer: ប្រាសាទពិមាយ ) is one of the largest Khmer temples of Thailand. It is located in the town of Phimai, Nakhon Ratchasima province.

Day Trip to Korat and Phimai Historical Park

Prasat Phanom Wan 10th Century Khmer Temple - Nakhon Ratchasima Thailand 2023

The Khmer Empire was a powerful Kingdom in South-East Asia. Its major architectural works (temples and sculptures) are located in present day Cambodia, where the capital of the empire was located. However, during long periods of time the Khmer ruled over parts of present day Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.

Prasat Phanom Wan was built during the 10-11th century. As most other Khmer sanctuaries (but not Phimai), its main entrance and temple structures face east.

While in the past it was dedicated to Lord Shiva, later many Buddha Images were placed inside the sanctuary, and now a large Buddha Image is standing in the main tower. Some of its lintels are (again) in place. The grounds are well kept, and it is pleasant to walk around the temple compound. It is not as impressive as Prasat Hin Phimai, Prasat Phanom Rung or Prasat Muang Tam, but is certainly worth a short visit.

The Khmer ruin is currently being restored so when you are there expect to see a bit of work being done but it’s minor and doesn’t distract from the visit. It’s open daily and admission is 50 Baht (10 Baht for Thais). It’s not overly crowded and most tourists don’t know about it.
