Sospel is a commune (municipality) and former schismatic episcopal seat (1381-1418) in the Alpes-Maritimes department in southeastern France near the Italian border and not far from Monte Carlo.
The town dates back to the 5th century, when it served as an important staging post on the royal road from Nice to Turin. Its main monument is the former cathedral. The old toll bridge used by travellers to cross the Bévéra, built in the 13th century, still stands. It was bombed by the Germans during World War II to prevent contact between the French Resistance (The Maquis) and the Italians. Much of the town was destroyed. Renovated after World War II it now houses the tourist office.
The ruins of a tower, part of a château (residential castle) belonging to the counts of Provence, are all that remain of the 14th century city walls.

Rooms in the original Mas Candille have 25 square meters, while rooms in La Bastide have 38 square meters. Each room has a separate bathroom, and 31 rooms have private balconies or terraces looking out onto the Pre-Alps or up towards Mougins' historic village.
In July 2009, six new contemporary suites were added to Le Mas Candille. These new suites are located in a new extension, La Villa, just below Le Mas Candille's main terrace. La Villa offers magnificent mountain views and a superb planted rooftop. The new suites introduce a more contemporary interior design and larger and brighter living space, including a spacious lounge, large bathrooms, state-of-the-art technology, floor-to-ceiling windows, and large private terraces.
All suites have individual heating and air-conditioning, complimentary Wi-Fi internet access, two flat-screen TVs, an iPod docking station, a Nespresso coffee machine, and a walk-in closet. Mougins is a village full of charm located about six kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea, north of Cannes and Le Cannet, and south of Grasse. It is one of the five cities that created Sophia-Antipolis with Valbonne, Biot, Antibes, and Vallauris. The major cities of Grasse, Antibes, and Nice are close to Mougins.
Pablo Picasso became famous thanks to Pablo Picasso. In the summer of 1936, he stayed at the Vaste Horizon hotel in the village. He returned to Mougins several times over a period of two years, but it was not until much later, in 1961, that he settled there permanently, buying the mas Notre-Dame de Vie where he ended his life on April 8, 1973.
