Today we are going to take a look at Arkansas and the mess that it is.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the national poverty rate was 11.8% percent or 38.1 million Americans in 2018. These states have the highest percentages of poverty in the country: Mississippi, New Mexico, Louisiana, West Virginia, Arkansas, Kentucky, Alabama, District of Colombia, Oklahoma, South Carolina and the territory of Puerto Rico.
So why are we starting with Arkansas? Last month I got an email from a guy named Glen in Little Rock who said
I best not put Arkansas in my mouth again. He said he’d find me and pull me out of my electric car and crush my head.
I replied: Dude how did you watch my video, you are using AOL dial-up service.
He replied. What’s wrong with that.
I replied “Nothing if it were 1997.
He never replied again. So, in Glen's honor, I am putting Arkansas back in my mouth and we are going to look at the poorest towns in Arkansas.

There are a few old homes we passed by while driving around. A few house looked like Victorian homes at first glance. The town is about seven miles from the Mississippi River.

Perryville Civil War Battlefield. One of the most important battles of the war that's overlooked!
Cool Places Across America with C&L visited the Perryville Civil War Battlefield in Kentucky.
This is probably one of the most important battles fought in the Civil War because it was one of three northern victories that gave President Lincoln enough leverage to make the Emancipation Proclamation. Shortly after this victory, the Emancipation Proclamation was declared.
But, yet, it's probably the most overlooked piece of American history.
And, there's some interesting other historical trivia as well including
1) This battle was considered the High Water Mark for the Confederacy in the Western Theatre.
2) This was the largest battle in Kentucky with about 72,000 soldiers in the area.
3) We all remember WWII's General Douglas McArthur who won the Medal of Honor. Well, it turns out that his father, Arthur McArthur, a young officer from Wisconsin, was involved in this battle ... and later in the Civil War would win the Medal of Honor. The McArthurs are one of only two fathers-sons who would do so.
While visiting, we did a walking tour of the battlefield, reading many historical markers.

Founded in 1758 Perryville, Kentucky was originally known as Harbeson's Station. In 1862 Perryville became the site of the most destructive Civil War battle in the state which left more than 7,600 killed, wounded or missing during a 4 hour battle. Today the village is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Arkansas Highway 9: Perryville to Williams Junction | Drive America's Highways ????
???? Drive America's Highways for 10 miles south along Arkansas Highway 9 from Perryville to Williams Junction.
We start the video crossing the intersection with AR-60 west in downtown Perryville. Driving south, we soon leave Perryville as we cross the Fouche La Fave river, slowly gaining altitude as we cross over the low foothills of the Ouachita Mountains. Passing through the community of Thornburg, we begin to descend down the south side of one of the ranges of the Ouachita Mountains, passing the intersection with Arkansas Highway 324, to enter the community of Williams Junction, where we end the video continuing east on Arkansas Highway 10 as Highway 9 continues south.
