Check out this link of a 1970 Film of this exact location to see how coke was manufactured! Today Enjoy a tour of the last great coke oven operations located in Shoaf Pennsylvania, south of Uniontown. This 200 oven operation closed for good in 1972 due to not meeting EPA standards. So ended a 100 year history of coke manufacturing in Southwestern PA. This operation could be a wonderful walking tour if not for the fact that what is under it is too valuable for the owners to turn over to tourism (a coal seam) Too Bad. Enjoy the best examples of complete coke ovens, with rails still in place for larry cars to load the coal through a trunnel hole in the top, rails running along the front of the ovens to allow the mud car to assist the mudders who would block up the opening for a 36 or 72 hour coke charge, the Railroad Wharf still intact between two banks of ovens that allowed the workers to easily deposit the cooked coke and send north to Pittsburgh. To realize what workers did for so little (often a $1 a day or worse--paid in company store scrip), a dirty, life shortening existance, which supported their families, is quite a humbling experience. Visit and the Coal and Coke Heritage Museum, located at Penn State University, Fayette Campus US 119 South, Uniontown, PA.

Arkansas City is located at the confluence of the Arkansas and Walnut rivers on the southern-most boundary of the beautiful Flint Hills in south-central Kansas and was the starting line for the Cherokee Strip land rush of 1893.
At the turn of the century, Arkansas City was a rival to Wichita in size and enterprise, boasting several busy rail lines, an elegant opera house, numerous fine hotels, a manufacturing base and a bustling agricultural economy. A popular swimming hole called Paris Lake was located west of downtown; the lake – and the hot springs at Geuda as well – was mired with silt in a flood about 1919. Nearly 20 years later the WPA would build the Paris Park pool in the same spot. African Americans were not allowed to swim in the Paris Park pool during the era of segregation and used a separate facility colloquially referred to as the black pool by local residents.
The Kirkwood Wind Engine Company, a former windmill manufacturer, was headquartered in Arkansas City near the turn of the 20th century;[citation needed] the now-defunct Kanotex Refining Company established a refinery and headquarters in the city in 1917.[14]
During the 1920s, Arkansas City had an active group of Ku Klux Klan. The group was mostly concentrated in south-central and south-east Kansas. The state took action to shut down the group, and most Klans disbanded by 1927.
In 1928, the city's official fall festival, Arkalalah, was inaugurated. This annual event still draws thousands of visitors each October, and features a queen, a carnival, dozens of homegrown fair food vendors and a spectacular parade typically lasting two hours or more. During the 1955 Arkalalah celebration, retired Santa Fe steam locomotive 2542 was dedicated in Wilson Park, where it remains today.
The city prospered through much of the 20th century, but by the 1980s, the community was facing economic challenges.

Its award-winning theater, music and art programs not only prepare students for significant advancement in their liberal arts careers, but also add to the culture of the community. The school’s expanding sports complex in south Ark City has transformed a former unsightly industrial strip into a highly functional and impressive arena of athletic activity.

Fast Ferry service outlined in Woodbridge
A proposed project could help take cars off Northern Virginia roads.
Details of the Fast Ferry project were unveiled at a town hall Supervisor Frank Principi hosted on Wednesday.
The meeting, held at Harbour View, also focused on the revitalization of North Woodbridge.
Dan Hardy from the Renaissance Planning Group presented on the North Woodbridge Small Area Plan.
Community leaders are hoping to establish a North Woodbridge Town Center and offer multiple modes of transportation.
Fast Ferry is one transportation project that’s being considered.
Launching the commuter service would require “substantial investment,” according to Michael Stevens from Urban Land Institute (ULI).
