????????TOP 10 CITIES TO LIVE IN FRANCE IN 2023

France is a beautiful country with a rich history and culture, and it is known for its world-class cuisine, wine, art, fashion, and architecture.

As a resident of France, you will have access to excellent healthcare and education systems. French healthcare is considered one of the best in the world, and education is also highly valued in the country. French universities are well-respected globally, and there are also many high-quality private schools for children.

However, like any country, France has its unique challenges and quirks that you may encounter while living there. The French language is the official language, and while many people in larger cities speak English, it is still important to learn at least some basic French to communicate effectively.

In terms of finding housing, France has a variety of options, from apartments in the cities to rural homes in the countryside. The cost of living can vary depending on where you live, with cities like Paris being more expensive than smaller towns.

Pau, the resort town's way of life

Explore here the particular way of life in a resort town between the 19th century and the start of the 20th century through this interview with Cécile Devos, a researcher with the cultural heritage inventory for the city of Pau.

This resort town became home to large hotels for travellers, which were scattered around the centre and originally built as luxury accommodation. Such hotels included the Grand Hôtel Gassion, the Grand Hôtel and the Hôtel de France, which were built in the second half of the 19th century for wealthy guests wintering in Pau. The winter season was the busiest on account of the mild climate at this time of year in this part of France.

Pau boasted leisure facilities that the town hall had put in place specifically to attract such tourists: casino, bandstand, theatre, concert hall, ballroom—all designed to welcome this particular social class and offer activities tailored to its way of life. There was also no shortage of places to go for a chat or a stroll. In those days, when you stayed in a resort town, it was important to walk around and be seen.
There were also guest houses that let out apartments and property owners who let out small villas that they had built specifically for letting out in winter.
The most privileged groups, or perhaps those who were most in love with Pau, even built their own villas on their land.
Villas sprang up in the centre as well, with all their attributes: a beautiful building, a park, a garden... though perhaps on a smaller scale compared to villas outside of town.
Villas built in the suburbs, on the outskirts, boasted much vaster grounds, larger parks, more elaborate gardens, a view, and a landscape that was a little different and occasionally amplified through further acquisition of land, or the design of an architect or a landscape gardener.
Most villas had adjacent stables, which made it possible to keep horses at one’s residence, along with the staff to care for them—the grooms. Daily activities included horseback riding and fox hunting, but also rides in horse-drawn carriages, which were seen as a sign of wealth that needed to be shown off. People would bring out their carriage, take it for a spin around town, and then park it back in the garage in front of the villa.

The Château de Pau (Pau's castle), where the story of the city begins

Begin at the start of the city’s history with this video. Pau’s origins go back to the construction of a defence on this rocky crag, which became the residence of the kings of Navarre after undergoing multiple transformations.

Around the 10th century, the viscounts of Béarn built a motte with wooden fortifications on the rocky spur formed by the confluence of the Gave de Pau and the Hédas. Over the 12th and 13th centuries, it was reinforced with stone structures, of which 3 towers still stand today. A small town, or castelnau, developed to the east of these fortifications along a main street, today’s rue du Château.
During the Hundred Years’ War, the viscount of Béarn, Gaston Fébus, wished to conquer this strategic position. He had a brick dungeon built, which bears his name to this day, as well as the Tour de la Monnaie located below. He also ordered the town to be closed off, which was still quite small at the time, with a stone wall.
After it became the official seat of the Kingdom of Navarre in 1512, the castle was completely renovated in the Renaissance style by the royal couple Marguerite d’Angoulême and Henri d’Albret. A grand ceremonial staircase, skylights and sculpted details adorn the palace.
It was here that Jeanne d’Albret gave birth to the future king of France, Henry IV, on 13 December 1553. As the “Prince of the blood”, he was raised in the French court, but he remained attached to his native Béarn. His sister, Catherine de Bourbon, kept the Court of Navarre alive and continued to embellish the castle and its gardens. Later, the governors in charge of the castle struggled to maintain the building, which continued to fall into disarray until the French Revolution.
In 1840, after being listed in the first French official register of historical monuments, the castle underwent extensive restoration works. Most of the furniture and drapery dates from this period. Everything within is designed as a tribute to Henry IV.
A tour of the castle will tell you much more about its history...
