Download the Bronx map!

Let's explore the Bronx! The Bronx, one of the five boroughs of New York City, is located in the northern part of the city. Known for its rich history, diverse culture, and vibrant communities, it has played a significant role in various aspects of American culture.

Notable landmarks include Yankee Stadium, home of the New York Yankees; the Bronx Zoo, one of the largest zoos in the United States; and the New York Botanical Garden, which is a National Historic Landmark.

The borough hosts several education institutions, including The Bronx High School of Science (think Spider Man movie), Fordham University, and CUNY’s Lehman College and Bronx Community College.

The Bronx also offers ample green spaces, including Pelham Bay Park (with Orchard Beach), which is the city's largest park, and Van Cortlandt Park.

But what are the different neighborhoods of The Bronx? Where are they situated and how do they relate to each other? Let’s learn the geographical map breakdown of The Bronx in NYC in this video!

Riding a Fishbowl to Parkchester - 1998 NY Bus Service

The only better way to ride a fishbowl than sticking your elbow out the rear most side window was to ride in the front seat of an 8 cylinder express coach through scenic cityscape. Enjoy this ride as if you were an actual passenger on this last relic of the most recognizable 20th century North American diesel powered transit bus. The new look remained in production into the early 1980s in Canada. Some of these were imported by NYC private bus carriers. New York Bus Service was able to keep these running long after all the others let them go, and I believe, without extensive body rebuilding. Wear and tear was at a minimum since many coaches were only required for two rush hour trips per day. The Madison Avenue bus lane is the only dual bus lane in NYC and was introduced just before the 1982 delivery of this coach. As you can can see, it was well enforced in 1998 and provides substantial time savings. The NYC express bus system grew very rapidly in the late 1960s and early 1970s coinciding with both a decline in the quality of local bus and rail service plus and increased expectation of comfort such as air conditioning. Later in the video I move to the back of the bus where you can really hear the engine as well as the synchronized hum of the rear mounted A/C unit. I believe the model number is T8H-5308A based on my reading of on-line equipment rosters. It is definitely a 96 width with 8 cyinders and no center door and delivered in 1982.

The route begins at Madison Square Park and proceeds up Madison Ave, cuts over to Third Ave somewhere in the Upper East Side, goes up Third Ave to E124th Street in East Harlem, then over the Triboro Bridge, Bruckner Expressway and the entire 1+ miles of the Sheridan Expressway (I-895) then on to Hugh Grant Circle and Metropolitan Oval at the heart of one of the largest private housing developments, Parkchester (built and operated at the time by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.) There are a few shots of Parkchester as well. Casement windows (the standard in thousands of mid-century NYC apartment houses) are still there. Note the lack of window air-conditioners. The 1930s designed wiring could not handle the load, so they were forbidden. The windows and wiring were upgraded a few years ago, after Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village in Manhattan were similarly upgraded by Met Life.

The song at 12:57 is Roberto Pregadio Claudia In Motoretta by Roberto Pregadio (Italy 1976)
My favorite 3 minutes of this video start 15:24, Madison and 3rd Avenues scenery floating by.

At 7:13 there is a discussion about one of the sealed beams not working.

By the way, you cowboys can learn a thing or two from the young bro at this big wheel!

Belden Point

Belden Point is at the southernmost section of City Island is Belden Point, named for William Belden, a developer who opened an amusement park and resort in the area in 1887. In the early part of the 20th century, the area was a favored recreation location for business tycoons including Vincent Astor, J.P. Morgan and William Randolph Hearst. Today, Belden Point is home to a number of popular seafood restaurants. A new public greenspace was dedicated in 2016 at its waterfront tip.

***
City Island

City Island is a neighborhood in the northeastern Bronx in New York City, located on an island of the same name approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long[3] by 0.5 miles (0.80 km) wide. City Island is located at the extreme western end of Long Island Sound,[3] south of Pelham Bay and east of Eastchester Bay.

At one time the island was incorporated within the boundaries of Pelham, Westchester County, New York, but the island is now part of New York City. City Island is part of the Pelham Islands, a group of islands that once belonged to Thomas Pell. The body of water between City Island and the even smaller, uninhabited Hart Island to the east is known as City Island Harbor. The small island adjacent to the northeast is High Island. The Stepping Stones Light, marking the main shipping channel into New York, is off the southern tip of City Island, near the Long Island shore.

As of the 2010 Census, the island had a population of 4,362.[3][4] Its land area is 0.395 square miles (1.02 km2). The island is part of Bronx Community District 10, and its ZIP Code is 10464.

In 1960 City Island became the last community in New York City to get dial telephone service. Until then eight operators in a private home on Schofield Street connected all calls. The dial exchange began as TT5, then 212, and now 885.

Bronx

The Bronx is one of the five boroughs of New York City, in the U.S. state of New York. It has the same boundaries as Bronx County, the third-most-densely populated county in the United States. The Bronx is south of Westchester County; north and east of the New York City borough of Manhattan, across the Harlem River; and north of the New York City borough of Queens, across the East River. The Bronx has a land area of 42 square miles (109 km2) and a population of 1,418,207 in 2019. Of the five boroughs, it has the fourth-largest area, fourth-highest population, and third-highest population density. It is the only borough of New York City not primarily on an island.

***
The Bronx Name

The borough (The Bronx) is named after The Bronx River which was named 200 years before the borough, this river was named after Swedish farmer Jonas Bronck who lived in Mott Haven BX.

The Bronx has a “the” because it’s named after the Bronx River, which runs through the borough. The Bronx River, in turn, was named after Jonas Bronck ( Sweden ) the first European settler in the area.

Jonas Bronck's farmstead consisted of approximately 274 (680 acres), The site is in present-day Mott Haven, about 1,000 feet south of Bruckner Boulevard and 500 feet east of the Willis Avenue Bridge

There’s a capital “T” in the official name of the borough, it should be The Bronx, not the Bronx

***
Hart Island

Hart Island aka Potter's Field is the largest tax-funded cemetery in the world.

Hart Island, sometimes referred to as Hart's Island, is located at the western end of Long Island Sound, in the northeastern Bronx in New York City. Measuring approximately 1 mile long by 0.33 miles wide, Hart Island is part of the Pelham Islands archipelago, to the east of City Island.

The city is able to recycle graves after 25 years. So after a body decompresses to skeletal remains, it’s legal for those graves to be recycled. That’s the reason New York City has never run out of burial space,

***
Long Island Sound

Long Island Sound is a tidal estuary of the Atlantic Ocean, lying predominantly between the U.S. state of Connecticut to the north, and Long Island in New York to the south.

***
New York City

New York City comprises 5 boroughs (Manhattan - The Bronx - Queens - Brooklyn - Staten Island ) sitting where the Hudson River meets the Atlantic Ocean.

The Bronx NY at Night. Chill Nightlife and Migrant Culture In The Bronx

The Bronx NY at night has a different vibe from what you would normally see (Manhattan) on TV. The chill nightlife of the locals in The Bronx is exciting and bears traces of migrant culture. I have been walking in The Bronx for this video and the question I get asked is, is The Bronx safe? This place is comparable to most major cities. It is as safe as you being at the right place at the right time.

Bronx Co op City Walk NYC - Exploring Baychester Ave, Bartow Ave & More, August 2021

This Co-op City walk exploration was done through the request of a subscriber who lives and go to school in the neighborhood. It is my second time exploring Co-op City. The exploration emphasis is more on H. S. Truman High School. You can see on the images I took of the school. If anyone else have a reasonable request like this subscriber, I will be glad to explore the neighborhood. I hope you enjoy this exciting neighborhood walk exploration just as I did. Please subscribe if you are new. Do not forget to like and comment. Have a wonderful day. Thanks. TEchi World Walk.

Harry S. Truman High School is a public high school at 750 Baychester Avenue, in the Co-op City section of the Bronx, New York City, United States. The school is designated as an Empowerment School by the New York City Department of Education, which allows it more autonomy in choosing a curriculum. Truman shares a uniquely designed and interconnected campus with two middle schools, MS 180 and 181, and two elementary schools, PS 178 and 153.[2][3] The campus was designed to be a one-stop and close-to-home solution for students and families in the Co-op City neighborhood, although many of the students commute to school from other parts of the city. The main Truman building is also home to the Bronx Health Sciences High School, which occupies a portion of the third floor, and PS 176X, a special education school for autistic students, which shares a small portion of the first and second floors.

Truman High School is one of the remaining large high schools in the Bronx that has not been phased out and broken up into a number of small schools. This trend, which has been popular in the city, has seen other high schools in the borough, such as Evander Childs High School and Roosevelt High School closed and split into a number of smaller schools located in the same building.[4][5] The school does, however, host Bronx Health Sciences High School created as part of the small schools movement, and previously hosted two additional high schools which have since moved to other locations. Truman High School and Bronx Health Sciences compose Harry S. Truman Educational Campus.

NYC Bus: BxM6 Parkchester - Flatiron District with an MCI D4500 series

Come for a ride on the BxM6 from the Parkchester section of the Bronx to the Flatiron District section of Manhattan in New York City. Today's ride is on an MCI D4500 series, among the oldest in the fleet. Despite its age, the ride was very comfortable at a premium price. New York City's Express bus system is among the most extensive intracity express bus networks in the nation and among the most premium using coach buses. Each ride costs more than double the regular bus fare ($2.90 v. $7).

Today's ride starts at Metropolitan Oval in the Parkchester section of the Bronx. Read more about Parkchester at the bottom.

As we drive down Metropolitan Avenue, we see the many shops along the way with fall foliage from the trees. It's really colorful. We get to Hugh Grant Circle where you can catch the 6 train of the New York City Subway. It also goes to the East Side of Manhattan and quite frankly, if it weren't for an experience today, I would've taken the subway. The comfort of the bus does not outweigh the awful traffic along the way along with it's costly price.

After Parkchester, we take the local service road of the Cross Bronx Expressway and eventually get onto the Brick er Expressway via Sheridan Boulevard. On this elevated expressway, we get a nice view of the Manhattan skyline. We slowly get across on the tolled Triboro Bridge into Manhattan.

Once we get into Manhattan, we slowly make it through all the traffic in East Harlem on 2nd Avenue. Then we make a right on 86th Street to 5th Avenue through the Upper East Side. We then head south on 5th Avenue alongside Central Park. By 60th Street, Central Park is over and we are going through Midtown and eventually the Flatiron District where the bus terminates. Enjoy the ride on the bus from the Bronx to Manhattan on a nice fall afternoon.

More about Parkchester
Parkchester is a very nice neighborhood that is within reach for New York City's working-class. In the 1940s the Metropolitan Life insurance company developed a huge swath of land to build apartments around a planned community that would have supermarkets, shopping and offices within the community and all surround the Parkchester - East 177th Street station on the Pelham IRT (6 train). The development is similar to Stuyvesant Town in Manhattan around 14th Street on the East Side.

Although the original development excluded black people, today, the plurality population today is black with a burgeoning community from Bangladesh. The neighborhood is diverse with a significant makeup from Spanish-speaking countries along with a population from the far east.

The neighborhood is known for its treelined roads and red brick buildings with terracotta decorations. Metropolitan Oval serves as the centerpieces of the neighborhood with the a huge fountain and park.

Bronx Walk NYC - Exploring entire Hunts Point Ave to Westchester Ave, September 2021

This exploration started from intersection and t-section of Halleck Street, Food Center Drive, Easy Bay Avenue and Hunts Point Avenue respectively. A YouTube subscriber requested this exploration of Hunts Point Ave. However, since Hunts Point Avenue is not a long thoroughfare, I explored other streets in the same venue. I do hope you enjoy this walk as I did while exploring the streets. Thanks. TEchi World Walk.

Joseph Rodman Drake Park & Enslaved African Burial Ground
The property of Joseph Rodman Drake Park in the Hunts Point area of the Bronx is located in what was once a Weckquaesgeek Indian settlement. In the late 17th century Thomas Hunt--for whom the neighborhood is named--acquired a large estate that encompassed this modest site, and built his stone residence, the Grange, down by the shoreline point.

Although, I have been to the area several times it’s my first time exploring it for public consumption. I was also at a Mobil Gas Station on Metcalf Ave operated by Mr. Elvis. He asked me to highlight his gas station as a part of the walk exploration. So, you will see him and the gas station in this walk exploration video. Please subscribe to the channel and click the bell icon to get a notification on new content. And do not forget to like a lot and comment to help the channel grow.
