Road Trip & Things to do in Lapland, Finland
In search for the best winter spots Kristin & I went on a road trip through Lapland in Finland and checked out all the things to do in Lapland and it was magical!

I know it took a while to finish editing this video as I had to struggle with the 4k video data I got from my new toy: the drone. I'm now able to shoot lovely aerial footage to give you an even broader picture of the destination.
Our trip to finnish Lapland started in Rovaniemi with the visit of the Santa Claus village where we said hi to Santa himself and had some fun tubing and drinking at the ice bar in Snowman World.
Snowmobiling was a great way to start our second day & I would say it's one of the must dos in Lapland for sure!
Next stop was the area of Ylläs where we spent most of our time: ice sculpturing, snowshoeing, skiing, dog sledding, a reindeer safari, sauna and northern light sightings made this trip to once in a lifetime winter experience!

We are visiting the beautiful capital of Finland, Helsinki, with a look at my favorite top-five visitor attractions. Of course, there are many more things to see and do here,
Be sure to see our other Helsinki movie Esplanade Park and shopping district, Market Square with its food and crafts on the waterfront, number three, Senate Square with its historic buildings and cathedral, four, you'll want to do some shopping and people-watching in the vibrant downtown center. The streets here are mostly for locals. It can get pretty busy, but has a relaxed pace and authentic atmosphere. Finland is located between Scandinavia and Russia. And you'll see a lot of blond hair in this city, which is the second-most northerly capital in the world, after Ridgeview in Iceland, And rounding out our top-five activities -- It's fun to take a boat ride out to the nearby islands, including an old fortress called Suomenlinna where we'll get off the boat and take a walk around.
Helsinki's downtown is rather compact, making it quite easy to walk to each of our main sites in just a few minutes. we'll start out with the Esplanade, then the food market and Senate Square, saving the shopping and boat ride for later.
The Esplanade is one of those great city parks. In English, it's pronounced Esplanade. In Finnish, Esplanadi. But the locals just say espa, and it runs from the market and waterfront all the way to the busy commercial streets of town. There's beautiful greenery all around you, especially in the summertime, and you can bring your own food into the park if you like, have a picnic on the lawn.
And there's some very comfortable benches here. The park was designed in 1818 by Carl Engel, and it took a few decades to develop with extensive landfill and landscaping. You could even take a horse carriage ride, if you like, or just pet the horses. This park is very much the heart of town, and it's not just for tourists.
This is one of the favorite spots for locals to come and relax and enjoy the environment. There are many fine restaurants around the outside of the park, and an excellent choice inside, the famous Kapelli cafe. Kapelli has a dining terrace that faces a stage and outdoor performance area popular with musicians, and today, a gymnastics family, who also put on a performance with their trained cats. Can you believe that? Is it possible for cats to perform an orchestrated routine. Just watch. Well, yes.
The cats can jump through a hoop, climb a pole, fly through the air, jump into a basket with her young daughters supporting the action. It's very common to run into the street musicians playing rock or classical, all kinds of music. But to see a family performing with trained cats is most unusual. This video was photographed during several different tours, all of them in the month of July.
July is a great time to be here because the weather is very mild. It doesn't get hot or cold, and the town is not crowded because locals tend to leave to go on vacation. The streets on each side of Esplanade host a main concentration of stores selling Finnish-made goods such as wooden toys for the kids and Marimekko fabrics, especially along the North Esplanade. These shops are all noted for their world-famous Finish design, a sleek, modern functionalist look.
The Marimekko shop is part of the stylish Kamp Galleria. This upscale shopping mall, right in the middle of Helsinki, brings top international brands and high quality Finnish fashion designs, providing a luxurious shopping experience in this unique center.
The Finns are proud to be a major creative force in the development of the Scandinavian design movement, whose roots stretch back to the Art Nouveau period of the early 1900s and have continued evolving into our postmodern world.
There are several stylish restaurants on this block, including Brasserie Kemp, whose food philosophy is a combination of French cuisine and Finnish food culture. My friends enjoyed a deluxe seafood platter The restaurant is open for breakfast right through late dinner, located right along the Esplanade, with seating indoors and outside. Another popular and more casual restaurant here is the Cafe Strindberg.
Great spot for a pot of tea. Maybe some pastries or a light meal, perhaps sitting at an outdoor table watching the passing parade of people. At the top of the Esplanade there is an interesting restaurant complex, the territory, and includes the Theater Gril, Theater Bar, a Clock Bar, club and a deli. Walking back through the lower end of the Esplanade, which will bring us down to the food market at the South Harbor Market Square.

Parkanon asema avattiin Parkano-Seinäjoki -radan avaamisen yhteydessä 1.1.1970, alun perin se ei siis ollut Mierontien (Pori-Haapamäki-radan) liikennepaikka. Radan rakennusvaiheessa Parkanon kohdalla sijaitsi jo Uusi-Parkano-niminen radanrakennusajan vaihde. Kilometrit Tampereen kautta 262+483.
00:07:35 Käenkosken ratasilta ja maantiesilta
Käenkosken maantiesilta valmistui 1971 ja on nyt peruskorjauksen alla. Silta on malliltaan betonikaarisilta. Rautatiesilta on alkuperäinen teräspalkkisilta vuodelta 1935. Käenkoski yhdistää Kairojärven ja Riuttasjärven.
00:10:35 Kairokoski KKO - ratakm 423+184
Kairokosken liikennepaikka oli vuoden 1969 loppuun asti nimeltään Parkano, kunnes uusi oikoradan asema avautui. Asemarakennus sekä muut rakennukset ovat noin vuodelta 1935. Liikennepaikka on lakkautettu verrattain lähiaikoina, vasta 7.5.2020.
00:16:15 Vatunen - ratakm 420+755
Vatusen seisake palveli kahta läheistä tilaa, seisakkeen paikka näkyy selkeästi maastossa vaikka seisake lakkautettiin jo 1.12.1955.
00:17:30 Jokiharju JKH - ratakm 420+333
Vaikuttaisi siltä, että Vatusen seisakkeen tilalle on myöhemmin perustettu Jokiharjun seisake. Tämä seisake on ollut käytössä 1.12.1964 - 31.5.1984.
00:19:40 Niemenperä ppl - ratakm 419+175
Niemenperän puolipuomilaitos on yksi tämän rataosan neljästä vartioidusta tasoristeyksestä, muiden ollessa Pihnari, Taulunkylä ja Jämijärvi-Sydänmaa.
00:20:20 Rautamo RMO - ratakm 418+805
Aiempi nimi Mekes MES. Palvellut läheisen Mekeksen kokoonpanotehtaan tarpeita sekä henkilöliikenteen seisakkeena. Käytössä 7.10.1963-6/1988. Myös sivuraide näkyvillä! Sivuraide johti Mekes Oy:n tehtaalle, joka toimi tässä vuosina 1963-1967.
00:26:35 Lapinneva LPN - ratakm 415+618
Lapinnevan asema avattiin 1.1.1935 ja liikennepaikka lakkautettiin 1.1.1999. Asemarakennus on radalle tyypillinen Thure Hellströmin tyyppipiirustuksin, valmistunut 1933. Asemarakennus on yksityiskäytössä.
00:39:30 Pihnari - ratakm 409+752 (tasoristeys 409+961)
Pihnarin puolipuomilaitos sekä entisen seisakevaihteen paikka. Seisake on ollut henkilöliikenteen käytössä 7.6.1935 - 31.5.1970. Pihnarissa on ollut Jarl Ungernin seisakerakennus vuodesta 1951 eteenpäin. Kuva: Seisakkeen alkuperäinen ratavahdin tupa on vielä jäljellä radan oikealla puolella, sekä resiinavaja vasemmalla.
00:47:50 Paloviita - ratakm 405+680
Paloviidan seisake on palvellut matkustajia tässä vuosina 1936-1955 sekä 1962-1972.
00:48:?? Kovesjoki KOV - ratakm 403+369
Kovesjoen pysäkki oli käytössä radan alusta asti henkilöliikenteen loppuun 31.5.1981 saakka. Kovesjoen asemarakennus oli samanlainen kuin esim. Niinisalossa, vuodelta 1933 ja purettiin todennäköisesti 1970-luvun alussa. Kovesjoen kohdalla video on hetkellisesti jumittunut.
00:53:20 Välisalo - ratakm 400+190
Välisalon tasoristeys ja seisakkeen paikka. Seisake on ollut käytössä 1.2.1936 - 28.5.1972.
00:59:25 Jämijärvi JMJ - ratakm 397+133
Jämijärven liikennepaikan kohta. Jämijärven liikennepaikka avattiin 22.5.1937 ja se toimi henkilöliikenteen loppumiseen saakka. Paikalla näkyy sivuraiteiden penkkaa, lisäksi jäljellä on ratavahdin asuinrakennus sivurakennuksineen.
Vuodelta 1933 peräisin oleva asemarakennus on siirretty 1990-luvulla lähistölle. Hellströmin suunnittelemaa rakennusta on muokattu rajusti ja se toimii nykyisin navettana.

Jämijärvi-Sydänmaa-niminen valo- ja äänivaroituslaitos. Tie on nimeltään Tykkööntie ja se yhdistää Jämijärven ja Sydänmaan kylät. Laitos on eräs Suomen vanhimmista tasoristeyslaitoksista, joko vuodelta 1962 tai -63.

Henkilöliikenteen seisake 7.12.1937 - 31.5.1981.

Tässä on ollut nimensä mukainen seisake (huomaa hetkeä aiempi joen ylittävä silta) vuosina 1935-1970. Seisakkeesta ei näkyvissä jälkiä.

Taulunkylän puolipuomilaitos on 1970-luvulta tai 1980-luvun alusta.
01:22:00 Niinisalo NNS - ratakm 386+215
Niinisalon liikennepaikka palvelee nykyään Puolustusvoimien junakuljetuksia. Liikennepaikka on radan alkuperäisiä, eli se on avattu rakennuksineen 1.1.1935. Asema-alue sisältää mm. alkuperäisen Hellströmin suunnitteleman asemarakennuksen sekä useita sivurakennuksia. Liikennepaikan henkilöliikenne loppui koko radan henkilöliikenteen loppuessa 31.5.1981. Asemarakennus on yksityiskäytössä.
01:25:15 Laituri tsr - ratakm 385+446
Niinisalon radan päätepuskinta ennen viimeinen radan nykyisistä tasoristeyksistä on Laituri-niminen kevyen liikenteen väylän tasoristeys. Radan päälle 2001 rakennettu Puolustusvoimien lastauslaituri näkyy vasemmalla. Se korvasi v. 1953 rakennetun Pv:n pistoraiteen.
