Day 6 of The Cammino del Salento, Puglia, Italy 10 May 2022
The final day of the walk was mostly along the coastal road or the rocky coastal paths. A day of more adventures along the way. I saw beautiful rocky coastal scenes with natural pools, caves and geological structures carved by the sea and weather.
The day was sunny and hot and was strenuous at times but knowing I was coming to the end of my pilgrimage energised my whole being. Each step was taking me closer to my final destination, Santa Maria di Leuca.
This pilgrimage has taught me many things. I have been inspired by the determination of persons of advanced age (an 81 years young man) who had started his track from Rome having walked hundreds of kilometers carrying his backpack and stick; a couple accompanied by a dog; groups of friends who encouraged each other to venture out of their comfort zone and experience another way of living for a few days. Each had their own story to tell and their reason for participating in a pilgrimage to the end of the ancient world. From S. Maria di Leuca people started their pilgrimage to Rome or to Jerusalem in the ancient times. Now the modern times is rediscovering the joy of participating in such sacred pilgrimages to rediscover one's innate strength and qualities. At the end of the journey we find out our true hidden self which had waited for the right time to reveal itself.
Thank you for sharing my journey and I hope you will also be inspired to find your own pilgrimage to self discovery.

LocalEyes Abroad | Northern Italy - Sirmione (GR SUBS)
In this first episode of LocalEyes Abroad, we make a quick weekend escape to neighboring Italy! More specifically, the northern part of the country in the Lago di Garda region and the picturesque town of Sirmione. Lago di Garda is Italy's largest lake and is surrounded by a plethora of truly beautiful destinations, but Sirmione stands out and for good reason. The medieval 13th century Scaligero Castle, the Roman antiquities, the winding roads of its old town and the traditional Italian (and Michelin level) food scene make for a very special combination of experiences offered only 2 hours away from Milan. I hope all of this gets you as excited for joining me in this video, as I was heading into this awesome journey away from Athens.

A day in Sirmione, Italy I Living in Italy I Vlog 20
Since I moved to Italy, I didn't had time to travel so when I finally can, I'm trying my best to discover new places like always !
Located on Garda lake, Sirmione is a really nice place to visit when you are in the North of Itlay. You can reach it easily by bus and with a nice weather, the beautiful color of the lake and your friends and family you will spend a very good moment there !

Places to see in ( Sirmione - Italy ) Scaliger Castle
The famous castle of Sirmione, which dates back to the Scaliger Lords of Verona, and its small port (still perfectly preserved) are an uncommon example of a fortress used as a port. The dungeon tower was erected in the thirteenth century by Mastino I della Scala. The massive fortress is totally surrounded by water and has an inner porch which houses a Roman and Medieval lapidary. From the drawbridge, a staircase leads to the walkways above the walls, providing a marvellous view of the harbour that once sheltered the Scaliger fleet.
The doors were fitted with a variety of locking systems, including a drawbridge for horses, carriages and pedestrians, a metal grate and, more recently, double hinged doors. Thanks to its strategical geographical location as a border outpost, Sirmione became a crucial defence and control garrison for the ruling nobles, retaining this function until the sixteenth century, when its role was taken up by Peschiera del Garda. Venice included Sirmione in its Republic in 1405, immediately adopting provisions to render the fortress even more secure, fortifying its outer walls and widening the harbour.
The Scaliger Fortress in Sirmione is located at the end of a long strip of land that juts out into the hinterland of Lake Garda. Here, for the length of a drawbridge, a stretch of water separates the mainland from an island defended by the Scaliger Castle. The castle and its dock, still in perfect condition, are rare examples of a fortification used to defend a dock. Upon entering the fortress, you will find yourself in the main rectangular courtyard, surrounded by high walls and corner towers. The watchtower stands to the left of the courtyard.
The castle reached the height of its splendour towards the end of the 14th century. Although it was an extremely important fortress, it was never used as the seat of the court. In addition to the entrance to the underground rooms, you can still see the remains of the walls of the Monastery of San Salvatore from the Lombard period .
A large arched doorway leads to a first lunette and a first drawbridge, both of which are connected by a corridor that leads to the second drawbridge. On both side of the corridor you will find the entrances of the courtyard of the dock and the second courtyard, where a staircase of 146 steps leads to a long rampart, up to a guard station. Further ahead you will reach the inside of the Corner Tower that leads to the trenches, with characteristic Ghibelline dovetail battlements.
