The Botanical Garden Pamplemousses - Mauritius (????????)
Named after Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the SSR Botanical Garden, or Pamplemousses Botanical Garden for short, is a tourist attraction located near the village of Pamplemousses, eight kilometers north of the capital, Port Louis, in Mauritius. It was originally much smaller and the private garden of French settler Pierre Barmond, who acquired it in 1729 and named it Mon Plaisir ('my joy'). In 1735 the governor Mahé de Labourdonnais acquired the land and first grew spices on it. The actual creator of the garden was Pierre Poivre, a French horticulturist around 1770. He imported exotic plants and laid out the garden as it can still be seen today. In 1772 he sold the park to the royal government as he was returning to France himself. The garden is populated with more than 650 species of plants, including the famous baobabs, dozens of medicinal plants, a large spice garden and much more. There are 85 different species of palm trees that come from different parts of the world. The facility is best known for the giant water lilies. Unfortunately, these were not in bloom when we visited at the end of October 2019. Nevertheless, the visit was worth it.

Fruit and vegetable market - Pamplemousses, Mauritius
Pamplemousses market is a great beginner market. It doesn't have the huge hustle and bustle of some of the other markets, but it really is worth a visit. The street food section has some great food, a lot of which were new to us. Prepare to queue if you want a good dhal puri and when you get one they are very good. The veg section is all laid out under kiosks, giving it a great open-air feel. Down the side are all the clothes and assorted knickknacks. Come early on a Sunday morning it is open from 4am to 11am.

We have a great day out in the north of Mauritius. Starting with the botanical garden. It is a great place to enjoy some nature and we even found something to snack on. Our next stop was Dodo's Den for a great meal of crispy chicken, octopus salad, and lamb curry. We walked off the huge meal at the old church and Paul and Virginie statute. The day is a must-do if you are in the north of Mauritius.
