Today we leave the hustle and bustle of Bangkok Thailand and head the island of Koh Kret in Nonthaburi province. Now don't worry this island is not far away from the city, only 1 hour or so via car or motorbike. In fact island is created thanks to the Chao Phraya River not actually out to sea.

It's home to many things but by far the coolest for me was the craft beer and sunken temples, all will be revealed in the video!

This traditional earthenware is still produced in potteries along the river. Koh Kret Island - Day Trip in Bangkok - Food, Shopping and More Thailand 2022

Koh Kret เกาะเกร็ด is a small island in the Chao Phraya River in Nonthaburi Province, Thailand. It is around 3 km long and 3 km wide with an area of over 4.2 square kilometers. It has seven main villages, the largest and most populous being Ban Mon. The island is best known for Thai-Mon people who make pottery for a living. The island is only accessed by ferries.

Koh Kret was originally a meander located on the Chao Praya river. Due to Chao Praya river's curvy path, ships would take longer to reach Ayutthaya, Siam's capital at the time. During the reign of King Thaisa, the king wanted to reduce shipping time and improve the kingdom's economy. He planned a canal which would bypass the meander and act as a shortcut for maritime transport. The canal was dug in 1722, requiring around 10,000 men and taking over a month to complete. After the canal was dug, shipping to Ayutthaya became faster and the canal was called Klong Lat Kret by locals. As time passed, the canal became gradually wider due to erosion and became part of the river itself, causing Koh Kret to become an island.

Today Koh Kret is promoted as a cultural tourism destination in Nonthaburi, a suburb of Bangkok. Visitors can experience the way of life of locals and learn about pottery making. You can also rent a bicycle to ride around the island. The food is a mix of thai food and Mon and is the biggest draw for Thais and visitors. Mon food such as khao chae, fried flower and thot man no kala, a variation of Thai fish cake. It is a local food that is not found in other parts of Thailand.

I show you what the island is like now and what to expect if you visit the island. It really is a great side trip for anyone that comes to the city. It’s family friendly and great for all ages.

Pak Kret Pier and River Walk - Ferry to Koh Kret Island Bangkok 2022

In this video we explore the area around Pak Kret Pier and see the new river walk. The river walk allows you to see the sights along the Chaopraya River as well as catch boats to tour the area. The reason for the video was to see how easy it is to get to Koh Kret island now.

Koh Kret is a great weekend get away for people in Bangkok. It’s very popular for people to get out of the city, see a few temple and shop in the market for food and snacks. The river walk and newly built piers allow easy access to the island by longtail or public ferry. The pier at Pak Kret and the surrounding area is worth exploring also with a sprawling market thst goes down the main road and the smaller side streets.

Koh Kret island the best of amazing Thailand

You can contact Khun Ad. 0816328681 for more information about Coconut Bongsai at Koh Kret island.

The island dates only to 1722, when a canal was constructed as a shortcut to bypass a bend in the Om Kret branch of the Chao Phraya river. As the canal was widened several times, the section cut off eventually became a separate island. The island continues to serve as a refuge to the Mon tribes who dominated central Thailand between the 6th and 10th centuries and have retained a distinct identity in their version of Buddhism and, particularly at Koh Kret, their pottery.

Boat tour Koh Kret island Pak kret Chao Phraya river Thailand

The evening of Loy Krathong is one of the most picturesque festivals in Thailand. It’s when people gather around lakes, rivers and canals to pay respects to the goddess of water by releasing beautiful lotus-shaped rafts, decorated with candles, incense and flowers onto the water.

Every year, Loy Krathong falls on the night of the 12th lunar month (usually in November), at the end of the rainy season when the full moon lights up the sky. The sight of thousands of krathongs, their flickering candles sending a thousand pinpoints of light far into the horizon is a truly magical sight, and there are plenty of places in Bangkok where you can get involved with the festivities.
Pak Kret is a city in Nonthaburi province, Thailand. It lies in the Central Thai plains on the east bank of the lower Chao Phraya River, bordering Bangkok to the east, Mueang Nonthaburi district of Nonthaburi province to the south, and Pathum Thani province to the north.

Koh Kret is an isolated island in the middle of Chaopraya river in Nonthaburi. Taking a private Supatra boat is another interesting to see the city from Bangkok to Nonthaburi. Be enchanted by its cultural abundance in Koh Kret where Mon people settled for more than 2 centuries. The style of architecture from Ayutthaya period can be seen in many main temples and the production of earthenware has long been well preserved. Join my video as I will be strolling along the small alley with the enjoyment of tasting endless selections of Thai delicacies. #TomminoZa #Tommino

Ko Kret - The island in the Chaopraya river Thailand

Ko Kret - the island in Chaopraya river, Nontaburi, Thailand

Ko Kret – The Island On Chaopraya River
The island of Ko Kret, is a small island on the Chaopraya River. It is very close to the north bounds of Bangkok, and is formally located inside Pak Kret, which is a district of the Nonthaburi province. The district borders the northwest side of Bangkok and constitutes, together with the city of Bangkok, one giant urban entity. The border between the two is almost unnoticeable.

Ko Kret’s history begins on the year 1722, when it was decided to dig a canal in order to make a shortcut to the local river bend. The canal was widened and eventually created an island, known today as Ko Kret. The island served as a refuge for the people of the Mon Tribe, and they brought with them the art of traditional pottery. Some of the tribe people live on the island to this very day and practice the same traditional art.

The island is square shaped and is not big; it is 2 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide. The population is around 6000, in 6-7 villages. The largest village is called – Ban Mon.

Ko Kret was severely damaged during the floods around Bangkok a few years ago. As you can see in the attached Map, the island is very close to my workplace – the Thai Ministry of Public Health, and I closely followed its restoration.
It took over a year and a half to recover.

On the island you’ll find several temples, the largest and most important one is Wat Poramai Yigawat temple, an ancient temple, built in the style of the Mon, it holds a major part of the tribe’s activities. One of the island’s symbols is the temple’s slanted Chedi (as seen on the photo to the Right).

The island is a total contrast to the atmosphere that prevails upon the giant bubbly urban bloc, found only meters away. Similar to the green lung of Bangkok – Bang Krajao, the feeling is as if you are in a small rural area far away from the capital. Because Ko Kret is much smaller then Bangkok’s green lung (Bang Krajao), it is very easy to get around.

The temples are not the main attraction on the island, but rather these 3 topics – handcrafts, various foods and pottery. All are bound under the name OTOP.

Boat Tour from Bangkok to Koh Kret Island - Great Day Trip - Thailand 2022

This is one of the best daytrips to take when you're staying in Bangkok.

In this video we'll take a boat trip along the Chao Phraya River where we'll see Bangkok from a different vantage point. The boat goes from downtown Bangkok to the pier on the manmade island of Koh Kret. Along the river we pass many of the famous sites in Bangkok; Icon Siam Shopping Mall, Wat Arun and many more places. The boat trip is about 2 hours and then we spend an additional 3 hours shopping and exploring the island.

This island has a great market with fantastic shops and restaurants. There are no cars on the island allowing you to experience the peaceful local life on Koh Kret. Many rent bicycles to explore the island or just walk to sample all of the foods available. The prices are really good and the view of the Chao Phraya River from the island and boat is fantastic.

Enjoy the video!
