Places to see in ( Burnley - UK )

Places to see in ( Burnley - UK )

Burnley is a market town in Lancashire, England . Burnley is 21 miles north of Manchester and 20 miles east of Preston, at the confluence of the River Calder and River Brun. The town of Burnley is partially surrounded by countryside to the south and east, with the smaller towns of Padiham and Nelson to the west and north respectively. Burnley has a reputation as a regional centre of excellence for the manufacturing and aerospace industries.

Burnley began to develop in the early medieval period as a number of farming hamlets surrounded by manor houses and royal forests, and has held a market for more than 700 years. During the Industrial Revolution Burnley became one of Lancashire's most prominent mill towns; at its peak it was one of the world's largest producers of cotton cloth, and a major centre of engineering.

Burnley has retained a strong manufacturing sector, and has strong economic links with the cities of Manchester and Leeds, as well as neighbouring towns along the M65 corridor. In 2013, in recognition of its success, Burnley received an Enterprising Britain award from the UK Government, for being the Most Enterprising Area in the UK. For the first time in more than fifty years, a direct train service now operates between the town's Manchester Road railway station and Manchester's Victoria station, via the newly restored Todmorden Curve, which opened in May 2015.

Areas in the town include: Burnley Wood, Rose Hill, Harle Syke, Haggate, Daneshouse, Stoneyholme, Burnley Lane, Heasandford, Brunshaw, Pike Hill, Gannow, Ightenhill, Whittlefield, Rose Grove, Habergham, and Lowerhouse. Although Reedley is considered to be a suburb of the town, it is actually part of the neighbouring borough of Pendle.

Along the Burnley section of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal are a number of notable features. The 3,675-foot (1,120 m) long and up to 60-foot (18.25 m) high almost perfectly level embankment, known as the Straight Mile . The Weavers' Triangle is an area west of Burnley town centre, consisting mostly of 19th-century industrial buildings, clustered around the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

The Singing Ringing Tree is a wind powered sound sculpture resembling a tree, set in the landscape of the Pennines, 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Burnley town centre. Towneley Hall was the home of the Towneley family for more than 500 years. Various family members were influential in the scientific, technological and religious developments which took place in the 17th and 18th centuries.

Burnley is served by Junctions 9, 10 and 11 of the M65 motorway, which runs west to Accrington, Blackburn and Preston (where it connects to the M6), and northeast to Nelson and Colne. Rail services to and from Burnley are provided by Northern. The town has four railway stations: Burnley Manchester Road, Burnley Central, Burnley Barracks and Rose Grove.

There are several large parks in the town, including Towneley Park, once the deer park for the 15th century Towneley Hall, and three winners of the Green Flag Award, including Queen's Park, which hosts a summer season of brass band concerts each year, and Thompson Park, which has a boating lake and miniature railway. On the outskirts of the town there are galleries in two stately homes, the Burnley council-owned Towneley Hall and Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham.

10 Most Boring Towns in England

What are the most boring towns in England? Do you have an idea of what it means to live in a boring place? Some people are actually living in boring cities or towns but are not conscious of what they’re missing due to their exposure. But if you want to appreciate what it means to live in a boring city or town in a developed country, consider these 10 most boring towns in England.
These are towns frequently found on the yearly data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on how happy people across Britain are. It was a compilation of the people’s responses to questions regarding their present and past happiness and satisfaction with life. Their comments are categorized to their priorities in life.

10. Cinderford
Let’s first look at Cinderford, a town and civil parish founded in the 19th century. The town on the eastern end of the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire is one of the most boring towns in England. The town’s origin as a coal mining center still reflects today be seen in the style, planning, and layout of the town as you could see long rows of identical terraced buildings.
Today, this historic market town that derived its name from the iron ore being mined and smelted there is the shadow of its economic past. With the decline of the coal and mining industry in the mid-20th century, most of the male population in Cinderford lost their job since they were employed in the industry. Today, the town still struggles to regulate its transportation and parking, education, and societal order.
9. Doncaster
Next is Doncaster, a large minster town in South Yorkshire. The town named after its River Don is also a market town. It has a large market center that has acquired that status from the Middle Ages. It is the main settlement of Doncaster Borough. Today, the town with its built-up area subdivision and the wider built-up area is one of the most boring towns in England.
The majority of the residents of this town aren’t happy about their town. Just like Cinderford, Doncaster is still struggling to shed the burden of the reputation it has earned from the 1960s mining community saga and failed investment.
8. Burnley
It’s now the turn of Burnley, a town in Lancashire. The town is 21 miles north of Manchester and 20 miles east of Preston. It’s at the confluence of the River Brun and River Calder not too far from the countryside to the east and south. To the west of this town is Padiham while Brierfield is to the north. It’s a thriving market town which is surrounded by breathtaking countryside. It used to be one of Lancashire’s most prominent mill towns.
What makes this place one of the most boring towns is the income disparity. According to the council, the variation in levels of income and wealth in Lancashire are very wide and not concentrated in specific areas. No wonder why it is among the most boring towns in the country.
7. Hartlepool
The large port town of Hartlepool in County Durham in North East is another boring town. This town is the largest and main settlement of the larger Borough of Hartlepool. Upon realizing that it is just 12 miles northeast of Stockton-on-Tees, you may wonder less about why it is one of the most depressing towns in the UK. Hartlepool is also located 32 miles southeast of Newcastle upon Tyne, 17 miles southeast of Durham, and 20 miles southeast of Sunderland.
One of the reasons why Hartlepool is so boring is the unregulated behavior of kids when they’re out with their parents. This creates a lot of embarrassment for any who wants to insist on observing decorum.

A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Lancashire! | Gawthorpe Hall

In this video we travelled north to the heart of Lancashire to explore another National Trust site called Gawthorpe Hall! This hall and it's surrounding grounds are considerably smaller than those we have previously visited but nevertheless it is a beautiful place to come for a stroll! The house is run as a museum by the National Trust but unfortunately all available slots were filled at the time of our visit so we weren't able to show you the interior. The grounds are small but free to enter so if you are just looking for somewhere to walk the dog or get out the house for an hour or two, Gawthorpe Hall is definitely worth a quick visit!

Gawthorpe Hall & Grounds (Burnley, Lancashire,UK,)

Had a nice morning at Gawthorpe hall, it is owned by the National Trust and

we were slightly disappointed that we couldn't look round the house till 1pm
when they opened the doors, we arrived early so we looked round the grounds which were very nice but we didn't find one bench to sit on ! , we visit a lot of National Trust places and most have plenty of places to sit and take in the beauty, ( disappointing !)

The LYR North Lancashire Loop Rose Grove, Great Harwood, Simonstone, Padiham. Lost Railways.

A walk along the Lancashire & Yorkshire Great Harwood Loop Line, this was also nicknamed the North Lancashire Loop Line. We start at Rose Grove, exploring the site of the engine shed, before moving on to Padiham and Padiham power station, our next stop is Simonstone before we move onto the marvelous Martholme viaduct and pit, our final station is Great Harwood and its many facilities before we complete the loop close to Blackburn station.

A very pleasant walk with a large amount of infrastructure still visible.

A brief History
The North Lancashire loop line was one of the most expensive lines built by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway costing almost £300,000. The line was built in two sections centred on Padiham. The line nine miles in length left the East Lancashire line close to Rose Grove at Padiham junction with stations built at Padiham, Simonstone and Great Harwood re joining the East Lancashire line at Great Harwood Junction about a mile out of Blackburn. Competition from the nearby canal, congestion at Accrington Station and a desire to stop other railway companies gaining a foothold in the area were some of the reasons for building the line but its construction gave the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway the opportunity to tap into the heavy cotton trade in Padiham and coal traffic from the numerous pits around the line. Parliamentary powers to build the first section of the line from Blackburn to Padiham were obtained on 18th May 1866. Sturgess Meek the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railways engineer was in charge of the project and appointed Mr Bowers as resident engineer. The contract to build this section was advertised in January 1870 and awarded to Thomas Stone and sons on 23 rd February 1870. The contract for all iron bridges were let to Yates foundry of Blackburn. The contract for the second section of track from Padiham to Rose Grove was advertised in November 1870 and awarded to James Gregson and Co on 5th April 1871. There were 39 bridges to construct on the line. Many problems occurred during the construction .There was a shortage of labour and some of the cuttings at Cunliffe, Norden and Great Harwood were massive. Materials from these excavations had to be moved further down the construction to build the massive embankments at Simonstone and Martholme.Old mine workings under the path of the railway gave problems with subsidence occurring during construction. Martholme viaduct was originally to be part built with wood but the discovery of coal during construction allowed the coal to be sold and pay for an all stone viaduct which still stands today. Towards the end of the contract for the Rose Grove Padiham section the contractor James Gregson went bust and the LYR Railway Company finished off the work with their own labour. The line between Padiham and Rose Grove opened for goods traffic on 1st July 1875 and for passenger traffic on 1st September 1876. The first passenger train left Padiham Station on 1st Sept 1876 at 06-45 with 70 passengers and one child. 10 travelled first class, 2 travelled second class and 35 third class. There was no major celebration just a small number of cheering children it was agreed that celebrations would take place when the line opened in its entirety. The first station master at Padiham was MR Thomas Garner. The line opened in its entirety on Monday 15th October 1877 and the first passenger train left Rose Grove at 07-35 arriving at Blackburn at 07-57. In the event there was no public celebration but the engineers and contractors representatives dined at the Bridge Inn Padiham where several toasts were proposed. The last scheduled passenger train left Blackburn at 10-47 pm on 30th November 1957 with just six passengers on board. The passenger service was officially withdrawn from 2nd December 1957. Great Harwood and Padiham stations were still used during Wakes Weeks for special traffic but this ceased in 1963. Goods traffic continued to use the line until 2nd November 1964 when the line closed to all traffic except that for Padiham B power station. Padiham station was demolished in 1967 and its coal sidings closed in 1968. Great Harwood station was demolished in 1965.

It draws me in this place ever since I went back over 10 years ago when the Stone Roses had reformed. The places we visited all have a story and also incredible views and wildlife. Everyone local we met wanted to chat and were absolutely a pleasure to listen too. A real pride is something I’ve noticed in this area. It was great to bring someone along who had never experienced the area and to see what they thought. Ps there are no filters on any of these shots as usual. It was just what I saw. We had a magnificent day! All the very best. Paul

PADIHAM: Burnley Parish #8 of 8

Our final stop in the Borough of Burnley is the only civil parish with town status in the borough. It’s located about three miles West of Burnley. Originally by the River Calder, it is edged by the foothills of Pendle Hill to the Northwest and Northeast. It was once a township in that massive ancient parish we all know so much about by now, and it became a civil parish in 1866.

It’s undergone numerous changes over many decades, most notably expanding and redeveloping during the Industrial Revolution. The town centre is now a conservation area. It has no known prehistoric or Roman sites, and it’s not recorded in any literature until 1294, when it was known as Padyngham

It was based around coal mining and weaving. Helm Mill on Factory Lane was the first mill built in 1807. By 1906 there were twenty cotton mills and the best preserved is now converted into flats. That would be Victoria Mill in Ightenhill Street. Many cotton workers belonged to the local Weavers' Association, whose membership peaked in 1907 at over 6,000.

It also had a power station until 1993. A modern business park, Shuttleworth Mead, opened in 2001 on the Western edge of the town where it used to stand. I’m making all this sound like it’s doom and gloom in this part of Burnley, but that’s not the case. This is a town that likes to look pretty. It even has a beach! Get the suntan lotion on, and rent a deckchair!

There’s lots to discuss as we wrap up Burnley, with PADIHAM.
