Ruta Luis XIV por Béziers y Pézenas
Uno de los reyes más insignes de Francia, Luis XIV, hizo una ruta por la región de Languedoc previamente a su matrimonio con la infanta María Teresa de Austria, una boda que reafirmó la paz entre Francia y España después de varios años de guerra. Dos de las localidades que visitó fueron #Béziers y #Pézenas.
El itinerario comienza en Béziers una de las más bellas del departamento de Hérault, en la región de Occitania / Sur de Francia. Aquí están las 9 esclusas de Fonséranes en el Canal du Midi, una obra cumbre de la ingeniería del siglo XVII. El ingeniero Riquet, natural de Béziers, presentó a Jean-Baptiste Colbert, ministro de Luis XIV, un ingenioso proyecto para unir el río Garona desde Toulouse hasta el mar Mediterráneo. Esta obra nació como el Canal Royal du Languedoc y, tras la Revolución Francesa, adoptó el nombre de Canal du Midi. Las 9 esclusas de #Fonséranes, adaptadas para personas con movilidad reducida, acogen todo tipo de espectáculos y actividades como teatro, yoga o conciertos entre otros, además de eventos vinculados al enoturismo.
Justo al lado de la catedral de Béziers está el palacio episcopal donde se alojó Luis XIV con su madre, Ana de Austria, hija del rey español Felipe III, el 3 de enero de 1660 en su viaje prenupcial por el Languedoc.
En Béziers se encuentra el negocio del músico Pierre Charial, uno de los cuatro talleres en actividad de cartones perforados para organillo. Nombrado Maestro de Arte el año 2004, Charial realiza los cartones de manera manual.
Béziers tuvo su periodo de mayor apogeo durante el siglo XIX ya que fue considerada la capital mundial del vino. De esta esa época es el Château de Raissac, propiedad del matrimonio Viennet que cuenta con habitaciones de huéspedes. En el Château de Raissac se realizan degustaciones de sus vinos en un entorno repleto de naturaleza.
Otra población que visitó el rey Luis XIV de Francia con su cortejo real es Pézenas. Durmió en el Hôtel de Peyrat, un palacete del siglo XVII que hoy alberga la Oficina de Turismo de #Pézenas. En el Palacio Lacoste fue recibido por el Príncipe de Conti en el año 1660 mientras que el el Hôtel Flottes de Sébasan se alojó la reina-madre Ana de Austria.
Pézenas es conocida también por haber sido la residencia de Molière, autor de obras como Tartufo o El Enfermo Imaginario. Dicen que Jean-Baptiste Poquelin vino al mundo en París pero en Pézenas nació Molière,el gran dramaturgo francés del siglo XVII. Es por este motivo que se organizan cada verano visitas teatralizadas por Pézenas inspiradas en este autor universal de la literatura francesa.
Pézenas, por último, es una villa de artesanos. En un inicio trabajaban sobre todo la piedra, la madera y el hierro pero en la actualidad esta localidad de #Hérault acoge otros savoir faire muy variados como la costura, la joyería o la cristalería que tienen su espacio en la Casa de los Oficios de Arte.

Pézenas is a City of Art and History boasting a beautiful heritage: numerous mansions of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, such as the Lacoste mansion, the Malibran mansion and the Alfonce mansion succeed one another. Beautiful paved streets lined with craft workshops cheer up the stroll. Besides, Pézenas is unusual in that it has been Molière's place of residence of in the 17th century.
The House of Art professions, situated in the former consular house, is dedicated to know-how and art professions. At the beginning of June, « Pézenas Sous le Regard de Molière » is a festival during which the old town comes alive through street manifestations.
Pezenas is a town in the Herault department of Languedoc-Roussillon region, north of Agde and 20 kilometres north-east of Beziers in the Val d'Hérault. It is one of my favourite towns in this area and well worth the trip to visit it. Pezenas has a nice attractive old town, unspoiled by modern development, with narrow streets to explore as well as some grand 17th century houses. Its town centre was one of the first in France to be protected as an historic monument.
Look out for the magnificent detail as you amble through the lanes. There are example of lovely stone detail to windows and doors, interesting wrought iron balconies and stone staircases. There are numerous imposing houses from the 16th to 18th centuries including the Hotel Jacques Coeur, the Hotel Carion de Nizas and the Hotel de Lacoste among those to look out for. There is also a well preserved Jewish ghetto in the town dating from the middle ages.
The most important religious monument in Pezenas is the 18th century Collegiale Church of Saint-Jean, above all for the important treasury that it contains. Others include the roman style Church of Saint-Jean-de-Bébian, classified as a historic monument, and the other main church - the Church of Saint-Ursule - also merits a visit.
The town is also reputed for its antique and bric-a-brac shops.
The Tourist Office in Pézenas offers guided tours of the town to help you make the most of a visit. The tourist office itself was once the barbers shop and it was here apparently that Moliere dreamed up some of the characters for his plays. If you are staying in or close to Pézenas during the evening you can wander through the old town and find a number of inviting restaurants to tempt you.
The town is especially proud of its association with Moliere, who brought his troupe to the town on several occasions, and has a monument to commemorate the fact by the reputed sculptor Jean-Antoine Anjelbert. Budding authors seeking inspiration can visit the Museum de Vulliod Saint-Germain where you can even see Moliere's armchair. There is also a Museum of Toys, an Arts and Crafts Centre and an interesting Centre for Architecture and Heritage in Pezenas. Each summer Pezenas plays host to the Mirondela de l'Arte, and music and street entertainment takes over the town. The market day is Saturday in Pezenas.

But the history of the town is much older since the origin of the name Pézenas dates back to the Roman occupation. Roman author, Gaius Plinius Secundus (AD 23/24 – 79), known as Pliny the Elder praised the merits of Piscenae for the quality of the waters of his river, the Peyne.

From 1262, Pézenas asserts itself when it enters the royal domain, after the crusade against the Albigensians, as a place of fairs until the mid-nineteenth century. The Montmorençy, Governors of the province of Languedoc, made Pézenas their capital. The Estates General - an itinerant assembly that voted the king the tax and supervised the administration of the dioceses frequently sat in Pézenas and attracted a society that built beautiful mansions and field houses, real little castles.
The town remained loyal to the future Charles VII during the Hundred Years War, it was thus spared and rewarded for this loyalty. The future king granted him the right to establish a salt granary and the privilege of adding to his arms a free golden quarter to the azure dolphin. The power of the town increased thanks to its opening to the commercial world of Languedoc and beyond to the Mediterranean basin (Catalonia, Provence, Liguria, Tuscany) and to Lyon to the north. To this economic power is added a political power. Indeed in 1456 are held for the first time the States of Languedoc which guarantee autonomy of the province, the political importance of Pézenas will last more than two centuries.

Quand j'ai regardé le guide de l'hôtel où on avait passé la nuit, Pézenas était fortement recommandé, nous avons donc décidé d'y aller cette fois. C'est une très belle ville, et pour les touristes il y avait un texte descriptif devant les bâtiments historiques pour en apprendre plus sur les symboles de la ville.
Je pense que Pézenas est une ville très sympathique pour les touristes. J'ai beaucoup aimé ce système.

A city that seems frozen in time with an exceptional heritage.
Pézenas has a well-preserved medieval historic center, with narrow streets, ancient buildings and a charming atmosphere and we would not be surprised to see *Molière* appear at the bend of a cobbled alley. But why Molière? Because the famous French playwright made numerous stays there and performed several plays there.
Pézenas holds the label of *City of Crafts* because even today, it has managed to preserve its artistic soul, and there are a number of art galleries and artisan shops which line the streets and which are very pleasant to visit.
In Pézenas, you will be surprised by the *old doors* of almost each house. Take a good look at them, they are really different! Each residence has an original door. Each one more beautiful than the other, often made of wood, colored or not, in a rather medieval style.
