5 Things You Should NEVER Do in Hungary ???????? Don't Do This in Budapest

In today's Hungary travel vlog, we discuss 5 Things You Should NEVER Do in Hungary and Don't Do This in Budapest.

There are a few other posts about Hungary: 25 Things to do in Budapest, Hungary Travel Guide, DO'S AND DON’T IN HUNGARY, Visit Budapest - Five Things You Will Love & Hate about Budapest, Hungary, and 3 Crazy Things About BUDAPEST. But none really touch on the things you should never do in Hungary. So I decided to make this travel vlog!

This isn't a complete list of what not to do in Hungary , just some things I observed from my recent trip to Budapest, Hungary. If you are Hungarian, a Hungarian expat, or living in Hungary and you have any other suggestions of things related to the topic of don't do this in Hungary , make sure you comment below. Make sure you also try Palinka! Palinka is a fruit brandy! If offered Palinka it is rude to turn it down.

Hungary tourism is a big driver of the Hungarian economy, so they do overlook somethings that tourist do, but try to respect the cultural differences when you travel Hungary.

Hopefully you can use this to supplement your Hungary travel guide advice and not be viewed as a rude tourist.

I love Hungary - don't let the rules or culture differences keep you from visiting. Just be mindful of those cultural differences and enjoy this awesome country.

5 Things You Should Never Do In Hungary

Let me start off by saying, if I had to recommend just one city in Europe to visit it would probably be Budapest. It’s got everything, old world charm but in a modern city, the architecture is amazing and exactly what you think of when you think European city, it’s very safe, the food is amazing and it’s soooo affordable compared to comparable cities.

1 - Never clink glasses or bottles together. There was a revolution in Hungary in 1848 that was defeated. Legend has it that Austrians celebrated in Vienna by toasting and clinking their glasses. Hungarians vowed not to cheers with glasses for 150 years. While that time frame ended in 1998 - many Hungarians still do not cheers! It was actually against the law until the mid 1990s!

2 - Never make the Hungry Hungary joke to a Hungarian. It’s one of those things that non Hungarians say to Hungarians and well….it’s just not funny. Don’t do that!!!!

3 - Never forget to tip. After spending 8 months in countries where tipping isn’t customary and sometimes considered offensive, I often forget to tip! In Budapest and Hungary in general tipping is customary. The acceptable tipping rate is around 15%. Side note: Don’t say thank you until you’ve paid your tab. Saying thank you when you pay your tab lets the server know you’re done and you don’t expect any change. So make sure you don’t do that if you want change back.

4 - Never refuse Palinka. Palinka is a fruit brandy that is a favorite with Hungarians. Hungarians like to say Palinka in small amounts is medicine, in large amounts a remedy! You don’t drink Palinka alone - it’s a drink Hungarians have with friends. It’s is a big no-no to turn down Palinka if it’s offered to you.

5 - Never say Buda-PEST. That’s the quickest way to get on a Hungarian’s bad side. It’s Buddah - PESHT. Side note: DONT CALL IT Bucharest! That’s in Romania! I made that mistake…didn’t turn out well for me! In my defense I had one to many Palinka!!!!

Also, never miss a chance to hang out at one of the Budapest ruin bars.

Don't expect street food prices while dining on Andrássy avenue. These were the most pricy lángoses, though the taste was one of the best!

4. LIGETI LÁNGOS AT CITY PARK
If you're wandering around City Park, look for the pavilions and the lángos kiosk in the brick building.
The potato lángos menu contains the basic options and some premium ones with unique toppings. The edge was fluffy and crispy, the middle part was thinner, perfect combination!

5. LÁNGOSOM
Lángosom is a cute little place with authentic Hungarian decoration.
For me, the lángos wasn’t that tasty. It was a bit overcooked and oily.

6. LÁNGOS BURGER AT STREET FOOD KARAVÁN
If you want to try a special lángos, visit Lángos burger at Karaván Street food and try out one of their lángos burgers.
At festivals, we tasted the beef lángos burger, and it was so flavourful. So we had to test the other burgers as well.

7. DRUM CAFÉ BUDAPEST, LÁNGOS & GULYÁS BÁR
It’s located in Dob street in the city centre, so it’s a touristy place.
The lángos was meh... The dough was thick and heavy, and it wasn't tasty.

8. LÁNGOS SHOP AT CENTRAL MARKET HALL
Central Market and its lángos shop are famous among tourists and locals. The shop offers many lángos toppings, way too many toppings! The lángos dough was crispy outside, fluffy inside and wasn't oily.
BE CAREFUL! The sellers see the difference between tourists and locals. So they might offer you a more expensive lángos. Make sure to check the prices!

9. LÁNGOSOS (KRUMPLIS LÁNGOS) AT FLÓRIÁN SQUARE
Their name, Krumplis lángos means Potato lángos because the lángos dough contains potato. Luckily it was as delicious as the basic ones.

10. LÁNGOS LAND AT FÉNY STREET MARKET
The kiosk of Lángos Land is located on the 1st floor.
The lángos dough was too thick for me, though it wasn’t oily.

10+1. ÁLOMLÁNGOS IN SZENTENDRE
If you’re heading to Szentendre and didn't have a chance to try out lángos in Budapest, make sure to stop by at Álomlángos.
Approach Álomlángos from the main square (Fő tér). Don’t be surprised if there’s a queue on the way that means you’ve found Álomlángos.
The dough was fluffy at the edges, thin at the middle, and the cheese and sour cream proportions were perfect.

Best Photo Spots of Budapest | Budapest | Hungary | Things To Do In Budapest | Tourist Tips

Budapest, the capital of Hungary, is a city rich in history, culture, and beautiful architecture.

Budapest, Hungary's capital, is a stunning city with a myriad of photogenic locations that are just begging to be captured. Here are some of the best photo spots in Budapest:

Fisherman’s Bastion: This is one of Budapest's most iconic landmarks, offering breathtaking views of the city, particularly the Parliament building across the river. Try to go early in the morning to beat the crowds and catch the soft, golden light.

Buda Castle: The castle itself is beautiful, but the view from the top is simply spectacular. It's an excellent spot to capture panoramic shots of the city, especially at sunset.

Széchenyi Chain Bridge: This bridge is beautiful both from a distance and up close. Capture it from the banks of the Danube or right on the bridge. At night, when it's lit up, it provides a stunning photographic opportunity.

Hungarian Parliament Building: One of Europe's oldest legislative buildings and a symbol of Budapest, it's stunning from all angles. One of the best spots to photograph it is from the other side of the Danube River, especially at night when it's brilliantly lit.

St. Stephen's Basilica: The largest church in Budapest offers great photo opportunities both inside and out. You can also climb to the top for a panoramic view of the city.

Széchenyi Thermal Bath: One of the largest spa complexes in Europe, this thermal bath is known for its beautiful, vibrant yellow buildings. A shot of the outdoor pools is a must.

The Danube River from a Cruise: Taking a cruise along the Danube, especially in the evening, offers an entirely different perspective of Budapest's landmarks.

Margaret Island: This island in the middle of the Danube River offers some fantastic natural scenes and unique views of the cityscape in the background.

Heroes' Square: As one of the major squares in Budapest, noted for its iconic statue complex, it's a must-visit photo spot.

Ruin Bars in the Jewish Quarter: These unique bars, like the famous Szimpla Kert, are filled with eclectic decor and provide a great, off-beat photo opportunity.

Remember, the lighting, weather, and time of year can all affect your photographs, so you might need to visit these spots more than once to get the perfect shot. Always respect local customs and regulations when taking photographs.
