How Much Can $10 Get You in NAMIBIA?

I've decided to bring back my $10 series for an 18th episode! Today, I'm exploring the beautiful coastal town of Swakopmund, Namibia -- which is really catching me by surprise. I had a lot of fun making this video in Namibia, and I hope you enjoy.

Also - many of the recent feedback I've received is that people want to see more of these $10 & $100 budget videos (and money-oriented videos in general)... Do you like this style, and want to see more of these videos? Your feedback is greatly appreciated to me so I can continue to improve.

Our G Adventures journey continues tomorrow up North to Etosha National Park in Namibia (elephants, rhinos, cheetahs... oh my!)

Top 10 Best Luxury Desert Safari Lodges & Camps in Namibia. 5 Star Hotels - Etosha, Sossusvlei

Hotel Reviews: The Luxe Voyager's exclusive curated listing of the Top 10 (25) Best 5 Star Luxury Desert Safari Lodges & Camps in Namibia. Namibia (vast space of nothingness) is the soul of Africa and a photographers dream location - with vast open landscapes, breathtaking scenery and great contrasts - ocean, dunes, mountains and deserts. This desert country of rolling dunes and swirling mists stirs the spirit and moves the heart. Namibia is so large and sparsely populated that it is possible to discover enormous open spaces without roads, towns, trees or even stones, just the lonely desert wind passing through one of the most enchanting corners of the earth. Namibia is home to unique & spectacular, eco luxury desert & safari lodges & camps which offer exceptional stays & experiences.

The landscape is geographical theatre and its mountains are pure melodrama. There is an Atlantic beach over 1,500 km long and canyons more than half a km deep. There is not one but two of Africa’s great deserts – the Kalahari and the Namib – and night skies that are among the clearest and darkest on the planet. Africa’s largest game park, the Namib-Naukluft Park & the private NamibRand Nature Reserve are a must see when on safari in Namibia, with its magnificent sea of rolling red dunes at Sossusvlei. Etosha National Park is one of Africa’s great parks in both size and diversity of wildlife. Skeleton Coast is one of the bleakest and loneliest shorelines in existence, but its stark beauty is compelling.

The breath-taking mountainous region of Damaraland is home to an assortment of desert-adapted wildlife such as elephant, rhino, zebra and lion, which eke out an existence in this near-barren landscape. The rocky outcrops of Twyfelfontein feature exceptional Bushmen engravings, which are considered to be some of the best-preserved etchings on the continent. Visit the Petrified Forest, which dates back millions of years and offers a haunting landscape of gigantic fossilized trees.

About This Episode:

Bartolomeu Dias sailed along the Atlantic coast in 1488. Near the area of today's Henties Bay he discovered such an abundance of fish that he named this coastline Praia das Sardinhas, Coast of Fish. The fresh water source was first discovered by Schutztruppe soldiers in 1886. In 1920, a minerals prospector stayed overnight. After tasting the water he was said to be healed from an affliction.[5]

The namesake of the town is major Hendrik Henty Stefanus van der Merwe who discovered the place in 1929 while looking for water. He had been hunting a rhinoceros in the arid hinterland of the Namibian coast near the Brandberg in order to collect a reward from a museum in Pennsylvania that was in search of a rhino skeleton. After shooting the rhino and scraping meat from the bones, water resources of the expedition diminished and forced the party to load the decomposing carcass and search for water.[6][7]

They chose to head into the direction of the Atlantic coast and reached it close to Cape Cross. From there van der Merwe and his fellows searched southwards for the mouth of Omaruru River. A few miles south of the mouth they discovered a deep sand valley with reed grass growing in it, advertising the presence of fresh water. Van der Merwe liked the place and after delivering the bones and collecting his reward, returned the following Christmas to build a wooden hut in the riverbed. The place became known as Henty se baai (Henty's Bay) and developed into a holiday hideout,[6] mainly because of the abundance of fish at this spot.[5]

In 1951 the South–West Africa Administration mandated to South Africa, proclaimed erven in the Omaruru riverbed that were available for rent, but the erection of permanent structures was not allowed. The first shop was established during that time. A lighthouse was erected to guide ships along the dangerous Namibian coast. In the 1960s mining holes were dug after diamonds had been found in the area on a few occasions. A few years later mining was abandoned due to lack of success. In 1966 it was decided that the riverbed must not be settled in, and property north and south of it was sold. A hotel was built one year later, and the town began to develop.[7]

Namibia Travel Guide - Experience Marvelous Namibia

Namibia Travel Guide - Experience Marvelous Namibia

Namibia is in Southern Africa, bordering South Africa, Botswana, Angola, Zambia and the Atlantic Ocean. Namibia boasts remarkable natural attractions such as the Namib desert, the Fish River Canyon Park, Etosha National Park and the Kalahari desert. Its people speak nine different languages, including some of the Khoisan languages which include the 'clicks' that present an enigma to most native English-speakers. Namibia produces some of the world's highest quality diamonds.

Few countries in Africa can match Namibia's sheer natural beauty. The country's name derives from its (and the world's) oldest desert, the Namib, and there are few more stirring desert realms on the planet, from the sand sea and perfect dead-tree valleys at Sossusvlei to the otherworldliness of sand dunes plunging down to the sea at Sandwich Harbour and the Skeleton Coast. Inland, running through the heart of the country, a spine of mountains creates glorious scenery – the Naukluft Mountains, the Brandberg, Spitzkoppe, Damaraland and the jaw-dropping Fish River Canyon. With rivers and wetlands in the Caprivi Strip and the endless gold-grass plains of the Kalahari, it's difficult to think of an iconic African landscape that Namibia doesn't possess.

Make no mistake: Namibia is one of Southern Africa's best places to watch wildlife, at least in the country's north. Etosha National Park belongs in the elite wildlife-watching destinations – big cats, elephants, black rhinos and plains game in abundance. Two other areas are emerging as complements to Etosha. Damaraland is a wonderful place to see desert-adapted elephants and lions, and also happens to host Africa's largest population of free-ranging rhinos – rhino tracking is a real highlight here. Over in the Caprivi Strip, the wildlife is returning, with Bwabwata and Nkasa Rupara becoming wonderfully rich parks to explore. This being Namibia, there are private reserves (Okonjima and Erindi premier among them) as well as game farms that serve as havens for rescued wildlife.

Destinations and cities of Namibia :

Spitzkoppe -- the Matterhorn of Namibia.
Fish River Canyon Park--The second largest canyon in the world.
Opuwo-- capital of Kunene Region and an ideal starting point for stocking up before venturing further into Kaokoland and the rest of NW Kunene.
Kaokoland - home to the Himba tribe, desert elephants, desert lions, Epupa Waterfalls and many more attractions in this north-western corner of Namibia.

EXPLORING USAKOS TOWN IN ERONGO REGION OF CENTRAL NAMIBIA SOUTHERN AFRICA

Usakos is the last town on B2 highway from Windhoek to the west coast of Namibia and resort town of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay deep sea harbor.

#Usakos #Namibia #SouthernAfrica

Usakos:

Usakos (Damara: grab the heel, Otjiherero name: Okanduu) is a city on the banks of river Khan, 140 kilometres north-east of Swakopmund in the Erongo Region of Namibia. It is located on the B2 (Trans-Kalahari Highway), the main road between the Walvis Bay and Johannesburg. The town has 3,000 inhabitants and owns 58 square kilometres of land. Usakos was scheduled to be downgraded to town status before November 2010.

The settlement was founded in 1900 as a watering station for locomotives when railway construction workers from Otavi Minen- und Eisenbahngesellschaft (Otavi Mining and Railway Company) (OMEG) arrived here on their way from Swakopmund to Tsumeb. Surrounded by mountains, Usakos is quite picturesque. Certain spots around the town show the longest uninterrupted horizon in the world. It is the closest town to the Spitzkoppe, often referred to as the Matterhorn of Namibia.

Development and infrastructure
Usakos is the junction of the branch railways to Tsumeb and the Angolan border, Outjo and Grootfontein from the line to Windhoek.

Politics
Local authority results, 2010
In the 2010 local authority election, a total of 1,029 votes were cast in the city. SWAPO won with approximately 47% of the vote. Of the three other parties seeking votes in the election, UDF received approximately 31% of the vote, followed by RDP (17%) and COD (4%).

Notable residents
Usakos is the hometown of prominent politicians Alpheus !Naruseb and Tsudao Gurirab. Michael Goreseb represented the town politically as well.
The first town in the east of the Namib Desert on the main B2 road from Swakopmund, Usakos lies on the southern bank of the Khan River, nestled in the last hills before the Namib, at the edge of a vast expanse of gravel plains. The town originally developed around the railway workshops which were built to service the narrow-gauge Otavi line, completed in 1906. Unit 1960, the town prospered. Nowadays the town's main role is one of service centre to vehicles plying their way to and from Swakopmund / Walvis Bay and Windhoek. As a reminder of the town's heyday, Locomotive No. 40 stands in front of the railway station, one of three Henschel steam trains built in Germany for her colony's narrow-gauge railway.

Etusis Lodge:

#EtusisLodgeErongo #KaribibNamibia #SouthernAfrica

In the heart of the Etusis Marble Mountains, you will find one of Namibia’s most fascinating landscapes, where you can get close to the wild animals in open 4×4 vehicles, on horseback or on foot.

Volker and Susanne Ledermann had a dream: to preserve a piece of original Africa. In 1993 they fulfilled this on the back then agricultural farm Etusis. The Etusis Nature and Game Reserve was gradually expanded to its 21,000 hectares today.
Other than most wildlife reserves in Namibia, we consciously avoid fences, which suppress the natural migrations of the wild: zebras, antelopes, leopards and many other animals have complete freedom to roam on Etusis.

The Etusis Lodge was built a little later in the heart of the reserve – with a gentle ecologically sustainable tourism concept, in which mankind understands herself as a guest. This has created jobs for the local community and, last but not least, we are trying to give each of our guests an impression of the uniqueness of Namibian nature and the necessity to preserve it.

Three things make the visit to Etusis unique:

One of the most spectacular landscapes of Namibia with the Etusis marble mountains, the Otjipatera mountain range, the Etusis waterfall and the Etusis plain.
The opportunity to experience nature in a special way – whether in open Safari vehicles, on horseback or on hikes.
You do not only come as guests but become part of the Etusis life. Whether eating together at the long table on the terrace or talking at the evening campfire about the experiences of the day while the Zebras come to drink at the waterhole just across the dry riverbed.

The Etusis Lodge and Horseriding is located halfway between Windhoek and Swakopmund, nestled in a more than 21,000 hectares, mountainous wildlife sanctuary.

Etusis – in English “the place where you can dive deep” is named after the deep lake by the waterfall and is both historically and scenically worth a trip. But we also invite you to dive deeply into a true African Nature experience.

Welcome to Namib Desert Lodge

Complementing the magnificence of a red sand sea, Namib Desert Lodge lies at the foot of ancient fossilised dunes. Make some space for wonder. A sunset or early morning drive through the red dunes exploring the sand masterpiece is breath-taking. Atop the ridge as the sand begins to glow deep rich sienna, a view of utter beauty is illuminated in gold, extending from the soft dunes around you to the green ribbon of riverine trees in the distance and the purple-blue mountains. Tolkien would be taken aback - and inspired, I'm sure, by such fantastical scenery! One of the Sossusvlei lodges, Namib Desert Lodge is imbued with its own special character.

Enjoy the relaxed and friendly ambience while cooling off at the pool, watching gemsbok arrive at the waterhole to drink, walking the trails into the dunes or dining in the cosy restaurant. Down-to-earth and homely, it is a place to put up feet, explore, discover and love. For the ultimate desert experience, spend a night in the dunes at Dune Star Camp. An intimate adventure, this slick and simple hideaway stands alone deep in the Namib Desert. The spacious wooden bungalows have beds with wheels to enable guests to sleep out under the stars and a dining area with a large wooden deck affords the best views of the landscape. Be prepared to fill up with desert splendour and a renewed energy for the incredible adventure of Life. Enjoy the quiet at Namib Desert Lodge away from the bustle around Sesriem, 60km away. Ideal for groups, families or individual travellers, there is space for all. A trip to Namibia is only complete with a sojourn in the Namib Desert.

ETOSHA OBERLAND LODGE ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK NAMIBIA SOUTHERN AFRICA

Etosha Oberland Lodge is located near famous Etosha National Park in northern Namibia.

Etosha National Park:

The Etosha Oberland Lodge, located in a 5000 hectare game reserve that shares a 10 Kilometer border with the Etosha National Park, combines luxury with a lot of privacy. The main area and restaurant of the Lodge is nestled in a wild, ancient “garden” and is surrounded by big trees. When entering the open lobby area with the bar and outside seating area, the view immediately wanders into the wide open space and chances are high to spot the first animals in the distance. The large infinity pool offers an excellent view into the open tree savanna and the 2 waterholes, where numerous animals can be observed. As the sun sets, many private seating spots, like small islands, invite to relax and observe this African landscape. Our friendly waiters will assist you for a sundowner drink. After the sun has set, a delicious five course menu awaits in our restaurant. For windy nights, there is plenty of space inside the restaurant, but isn’t it much more exciting to sit outside, glance at the waterholes and listen to the sounds of the savannah? What was that sound? Oh, the Blue Wildebeests are peacefully coming for an evening drink. What a lovely scene… Round off the evening in front of a cosy fire with a glass of wine in our lounge.

Our spacious chalets are carefully integrated into nature. All of them are positioned far apart from each other, hardly perceived by the neighbour. This promises lots of privacy and an undisturbed view into the savannah. Grab a page-turner and relax on the terrace in front of your chalet, while listening to the birds chirp and the zebras call in the distance. The brave ones are welcome to use the outside shower under a tree in front of the room. 75m² of space, tasteful design with lots of natural material and colours, air condition and Wifi, Minibar and Tea- and Coffee Station and most of all the view are a foundation for an unforgettable stay. A lot of love to details rounds of the stay. The fact that the whole lodge is solar powered should actually go without saying and makes everything even a bit better. An exciting day in the world famous Etosha National Park awaits tomorrow!
