Shot in 2023, this is a street walk along the central axis of the new Astana, from the Khan Shatyr Shopping Center along Nurjol Boulevard to the Presidential Palace, passing Baitirek Tower, the most important monument of Kazakhstan’s capital.
Nurzhol Boulevard was designed by renowned architect Kisho Kurokawa. Along the boulevard is a row of buildings designed by well-known domestic and foreign architects, including Norman Foster, Tolegen Abilda, Roy Varacalli and Manfredi Nicoletti.
The city has had many name changes. Its first name Akmola was replaced by Akmolinsk in the 19th century, before under Khrushchev's government of the Soviet Union it became Tselinograd. In 1991 following Kazakhstan's independence, it became Akmola again. In December 1997, the city replaced Almaty (check out my Almaty walking tour at as the capital of Kazakhstan, and in May 1998, it was renamed Astana, which means capital city in Kazakh. In March 2019, when the long-ruling President Nursultan Nazarbayev stepped down, the capital was renamed to Nur-Sultan after his first name. This move was unpopular with a large part of Kazakhstan’s population and in September 2022 the name was reverted to Astana.
The city lies on the banks of the Ishim River in the north-central part of Kazakhstan, within the Akmola Region.
