Exploring Village Life in Opuwo Namibia !!! ????????

Follow me for a walk through a remote African village in Northern Namibia.

Today's video was filmed in Opuwo, and is one of my favourite villages in all of Africa. The people, culture, overall spirit is one I will never forget.

All the village is only a few minutes away from the Himba tribe settlements, which is the reason I came to this part of Namibia.

Namibia Road Trip - 10 Days - Alone with a pop-up tent

10 day Namibia road trip itinerary, starting in South Africa - 5800km - alone.

Please note that I started in Johannesburg. It all depends on where you start and if you travel clockwise, anti-clockwise, zig-zag or whatever :P

My route was as follows:

1. Johannesburg to Upington: 786km, 8h 20 min.
Kalahari Monate Lodge (SA) is your best bet for an all right camping experience. It is out of town which is nice. If you come from Jhb, drive through Botsuana if it’s not Covid times - a lot shorter!

2. Upington to Nakop Border Control (Ariamsvlei): 131km, 1h 35min. From there to Hobas: 266km, 3h 19 min.
Hobas is the entry point to the Fish River Canyon. I loved the Hobas Campsite, but the Canyon Roadhouse is a funky and amazing place to stay. PLEASE do not just go to the Canyon viewpoint but EXPLORE THE CANYON TO THE RIGHT AND LEFT. There are no signs & it is easy to miss some stunning views. The rocky outcrops to either side will catapult you into trying to grasp the sheer scale of the canyon - you'll feel tiny in the best way possible.

I did not stop here but check out Luderitz and Kolmanskop - the ghost town. It is so worth it!

3. Hobas to Sesriem: 551km, 6h 43 min.
Sesriem Campsite is all right, but I stayed at the Oshana Campsite and I LOVED IT.
I stayed for two nights but could have easily stayed longer. It is a bit more expensive but the better choice - also inside the park! You can also stay just past Soltaire at Moon Mountain Lodge - an hour drive from park entrance and two hours from Deadvlei and Sossusvlei. There is also Sossus Oasis for camping outside the park. From the park gates, it's about 1 hour to drive along a tarred road to a 2 wheel-drive parking area. Then pick up the National Parks 4x4 which will take you to Deadvlei and the more popular dunes. I drove myself. PLEASE CLIMB THE BIG DADDY DUNE! THE VIEW IS THE BEST WOW THING EVER. AND YES, YOU CAN RUN DOWN FROM THE TOP IN THE END !!!! Otherwise, climb Dune 45 for sunrise (more accessible and closer to the gates) and just explore.
I climbed on some other dune right behind the gate. Speak to people and gain insights – always the best guide.

4. Sesriem to Swakopmund: 348km, 4h 8 min.
On the way to Swakopmund, there is the Tropic of Capricorn Photo Opportunity…don’t worry if you miss it…I did :D…oh and stop at Solitaire (closer to Sesriem) to fuel up and take photos of the abandoned cars. There is sooo much to do in Swakopmund. Check out the tourist and tour options! I stayed in a backpackers that had just opened up again. I was their first guest :D But there is a camping place, too. Cool for the weekend and some beers. You'll meet Germans.

5. Swakopmund via Cape Cross to Spitzkoppe: 119km, 1h 16min & 154km, 2h 8 min.
The world’s largest breeding colony of Cape fur seals is on the way. Stop if you are interested. For me it was just death, death and more death…sadly. If you breathe through your nose, you’ll be fine. Spitzkoppe Camping is super beautiful but very remote. Make sure you plan for no electricity and have enough water and fuel. You can take a shower at reception and they give you a map. Explore and snap some photos at the Rock Archway. There are boulders, a unique landscape, ancient rock art and plenty of campsites that are apart from one another and wild.

6. Spitzkoppe to Etosha: 502km, 5h 38 min. It depends on where in Etosha you want to go.
The roads in Etosha suck and there are no little drives or nice loops… Personally, I have had better experiences in more diverse environments in other parks in Africa. Visiting is a personal choice though. I enjoyed Okaukuejo more than Halali camp. They both have a waterhole though.

Check out Northern Namibia, visiting an indigenous Himba village (done right), other things to do in Damaraland etc. The Caprivi Strip is also still on my list. You need a proper 4x4 though.

I was also told that the Waterberg Plateau National Park is a nice place to stop.

7. Etosha to Windhoek: 501km, 5h 14 min.
The Urban Camp is a lovely, safe place to camp in the city. Visit Joe’s Beerhouse around the corner!!! Personally, I only stopped in Windhoek due to the need on the way back.

8. Windhoek back to Nakop Border Control: 838km, 8h 35 min & Nakop Border to Upington: 132 km 1h 31 min. This is a very long drive and I recommend another stop. I did it in one go…but I am crazy.

9. Upington to Jhb: 795 km, 8h30 min. You save all that with a different starting point.

Important: Roads in Namibia are dangerous. Know your car and how to drive off-road. Be prepared for eventualities. Always fill up when you see a fuel station. Carry lots of water, fuel (I did not need them but had two jerry cans), jumpers, knives and pepper spray, tools, extra tires, puncture kit, towing rope (if you can afford it or rent a car, you’ll have roadside assistance), sand tracks, a satellite phone (I did not have that but would recommend), portable tire inflator...

If I can do it, everyone can!

Happy Travels!

Northern Namibia - Travel Destination

Strikingly set on the Andoni plains, one kilometre from Etosha National Park’s King Nehale gate is Etosha King Nehale. The lodge effortlessly portrays the shape of an Nguni cattle head, with chalets stunningly furrowed to the north and south, from the central area like a bull’s horns. Upon walking into the reception and curio shop, boma and dining areas, the Oshiwambo ethos is intriguingly evident from colours, fabrics, cutlery, chandelier, table engravings with impactful proverbs and other embellishments.

The chalets are spacious and stylishly adorned with a touch of Oshiwambo cultural ornaments, and each has its own plunge pool, allowing guests to behold boundless horizons of the Andoni plains. – Fit for a king and queen. The lodge hosts 40 rooms and pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of the area.

There is one detail that puts this lodge over the top: It is its private access to a secluded waterhole, Ontalelo Outpost, which is set in the Etosha National Park. This waterhole is reserved for Etosha King Nehale guests allowing them to immerse themselves in the tranquillity of nature and observe the rich diversity of the animal world in this corner of paradise.

To the north, the conservancy is surrounded by the pulsating life of the communal areas of the Oshikoto, Oshana, Ohangwena and Omusati regions. This new Gondwana lodge gives guests the opportunity to combine the natural wonders of Etosha with the cultural vibrancy of the Aawambo people.

Average income in Namibia and the SADC countries is significantly lower than in Europe or North America. With the Gondwana Card we want to enable more people from Namibia and the region at large to travel the country – in order to increase awareness within society of the value of nature and its gentle utilisation for tourism.

Namibia Road Trip 2021 ???????? Fish River Canyon, Luderitz & Sossusvlei

We recently visited Southern Namibia on a 10 day overland road trip. Visiting the Fish River Canyon, Luderitz and the diamond mining ghost towns of Kolmanskop (Kolmannskuppe) and Elizabeth Bay. From there we turned north to Sossusvlei, an incredible and special place where the Tsauchab River finds it's way to the ocean blocked by the desert sands.

We were privileged to experience water in Sossusvlei, a rare event that only occurs very occasionally after exceptionally good rains in the catchment area. Deadvlei, with it's ancient, 800 year old petrified camel thorn trees is another special place, well deserving of inclusion in my 60460 bucket list.

Time was limited so from Sossusvlei we turned back south towards the Orange River where we crossed back into South Africa after an awesome, mostly gravel roads adventure. This video includes the highlights, in the next few weeks I'll be publishing more detailed videos of each place.

Namibia Travel Guide - Experience Marvelous Namibia

Namibia Travel Guide - Experience Marvelous Namibia

Namibia is in Southern Africa, bordering South Africa, Botswana, Angola, Zambia and the Atlantic Ocean. Namibia boasts remarkable natural attractions such as the Namib desert, the Fish River Canyon Park, Etosha National Park and the Kalahari desert. Its people speak nine different languages, including some of the Khoisan languages which include the 'clicks' that present an enigma to most native English-speakers. Namibia produces some of the world's highest quality diamonds.

Few countries in Africa can match Namibia's sheer natural beauty. The country's name derives from its (and the world's) oldest desert, the Namib, and there are few more stirring desert realms on the planet, from the sand sea and perfect dead-tree valleys at Sossusvlei to the otherworldliness of sand dunes plunging down to the sea at Sandwich Harbour and the Skeleton Coast. Inland, running through the heart of the country, a spine of mountains creates glorious scenery – the Naukluft Mountains, the Brandberg, Spitzkoppe, Damaraland and the jaw-dropping Fish River Canyon. With rivers and wetlands in the Caprivi Strip and the endless gold-grass plains of the Kalahari, it's difficult to think of an iconic African landscape that Namibia doesn't possess.

Make no mistake: Namibia is one of Southern Africa's best places to watch wildlife, at least in the country's north. Etosha National Park belongs in the elite wildlife-watching destinations – big cats, elephants, black rhinos and plains game in abundance. Two other areas are emerging as complements to Etosha. Damaraland is a wonderful place to see desert-adapted elephants and lions, and also happens to host Africa's largest population of free-ranging rhinos – rhino tracking is a real highlight here. Over in the Caprivi Strip, the wildlife is returning, with Bwabwata and Nkasa Rupara becoming wonderfully rich parks to explore. This being Namibia, there are private reserves (Okonjima and Erindi premier among them) as well as game farms that serve as havens for rescued wildlife.

Destinations and cities of Namibia :

Spitzkoppe -- the Matterhorn of Namibia.
Fish River Canyon Park--The second largest canyon in the world.
Opuwo-- capital of Kunene Region and an ideal starting point for stocking up before venturing further into Kaokoland and the rest of NW Kunene.

How To Self Drive The Best Safari - Etosha National Park, Namibia

DON'T MISS OUT: Our Self-Drive Safari in Etosha National Park | Namibia

✤ Welcome to “9B4M The Family Adventures” ✤

Lets's visit Namibia and go on a self-drive safari in Etosha National Park. Namibia is a beautiful country in Southwest Africa and is the driest country south of the Sahara Desert. Filled with multiple deserts, sand dunes, mountains, savannas, and the Skeleton Coast, Namibia is truly a unique country.

This video is the first in a series of videos that covers our nearly two-week stay in Namibia. First up on our trip was Etosha National Park, a massive 4,760 km2 (1,840 sq mi) National Park in Northwestern Namibia. Etosha means great white place and is a description of the massive Etosha salt pan in the middle of the park. The Etosha Pan is so large it can be seen from space. As the greatest wildlife park in Namibia, Etosha is a must-see national park. Etosha has an astounding list of wildlife include lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, giraffe, wildebeest, cheetah, hyena, mountain and plains zebra, springbok, kudu, oryx, and eland. Among the smaller species, you will find jackal, bat-eared fox, warthog, honey badger, and ground squirrels. And we saw everything, but the large cats. But we did see baboons!

We also offer our best trips and tricks to self-drive Etosha. Please leave any questions in the comment sections and I answer any questions I can.

I have to acknowledge @WODEMAYA and @TayoAinaFilms for inspiring me to travel to Africa.

We stopped by a Himba school and spent a few minutes with some truly amazing and special children. I was an eye opening experience as an educator it was a privilege.

✤ Welcome to “9B4M The Family Adventures” ✤

After spending a morning with the Himba tribe we moved on to visit a Himba school. It was so good to see all of the smiling faces and the next generation learns and prepares themselves to take their places in the world.

The school is in need of support as they need basics like books to read, pencils, and other basic school supplies. I promised the teachers and staff that I would donate and post their address for others.
