Driving through Omaruru town in March 2021, central Namibia, southern Africa

Omaruru:

Franke's Tower in Omaruru:

Omaruru is a city and constituency in the Erongo Region in central Namibia. The town has 4,800 inhabitants and occupies 350 square kilometres of land. The town is situated near the Erongo Mountains, on the usually dry Omaruru River. It is located on the main paved road from Swakopmund to Otjiwarongo. The name in the local Otjiherero language means 'bitter milk'.

Omaruru is known for its annual festival where the Herero people commemorate their past local chiefs, its winery, and for the dinosaur footprints at nearby Otjihaenamparero.

Omaruru was established in 1863 by Wilhelm Zeraua, the first chief of the White Flag clan of the OvaHerero people. In 1871, Anders Ohlsson and Axel Eriksson established a brewery at Omaruru. Eriksson had also established a trading post, which flourished and by 1878 he employed about forty whites. Eriksson's business was based upon long-distance trading between southern Angola and Cape Colony, which necessitated the establishment of regional trade routes.

The town grew around a mission built in 1872 by Gottlieb Viehe, now a museum, and was attacked in 1904 during the Herero Wars. Franke Tower was later erected to commemorate the relief by Hauptmann Victor Franke's troops of the local garrison that was beleaguered by Herero tribesmen who had risen against the German colonial presence.

Legacy of von Trotha
The descendants of Lothar von Trotha and the von Trotha family travelled to Omaruru in October 2007 by invitation of the royal Herero chiefs and publicly apologised for his role in the Herero genocide. Member of the family Wolf-Thilo von Trotha: We, the von Trotha family, are deeply ashamed of the terrible events that took place 100 years ago. Human rights were grossly abused that time.

Dutch Reformed Church
Omaruru Reformed Church, the local congregation of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa (NGK) was separated from that in Otjiwarongo on March 1, 1941, and included Omaruru, Karibib, Usakos, Kalkfeld, Swakopmund, and Walvis Bay as ward centers. Over the years, six congregations were in turn spun off from the Omaruru one, but the overall numbers were usually sparse given the predominantly German demographics of the local white population.

Omaruru is one of few Namibian towns where the political opposition is relatively strong. Namibia's ruling party SWAPO won the 2010 local authority election with 847 votes, followed by the Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) with 369 votes, the United Democratic Front (UDF) with 308 votes, and National Unity Democratic Organisation (NUDO) with 107 votes.SWAPO also was the strongest party in the 2015 local authority elections, winning four seats in the town council and gaining 1117 votes. The UDF gained two seats (590 votes), and the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance (DTA) obtained one (291 votes).

In the 2020 local authority election SWAPO won again over each individual opposition party but lost the majority of seats in the city council. SWAPO obtained 642 votes and gained two seats. One seat each went to the Popular Democratic Movement (PDM, the new name of the DTA since 2017) with 403 votes, the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC, newly formed in August 2020) with 305 votes, the local Omaruru Community Development Organisation with 297 votes, the UDF with 230 votes, and NUDO with 182 votes.

Transport and infrastructure
Omaruru is the only Namibian town not connected to the NamWater pipeline network. It receives its water from boreholes along the Omaruru River which are managed by the municipality.

Omaruru Railway Station connects the town to the Trans-Namib railway network.

---------------------------------------------------------------

About This Episode:

Bartolomeu Dias sailed along the Atlantic coast in 1488. Near the area of today's Henties Bay he discovered such an abundance of fish that he named this coastline Praia das Sardinhas, Coast of Fish. The fresh water source was first discovered by Schutztruppe soldiers in 1886. In 1920, a minerals prospector stayed overnight. After tasting the water he was said to be healed from an affliction.[5]

The namesake of the town is major Hendrik Henty Stefanus van der Merwe who discovered the place in 1929 while looking for water. He had been hunting a rhinoceros in the arid hinterland of the Namibian coast near the Brandberg in order to collect a reward from a museum in Pennsylvania that was in search of a rhino skeleton. After shooting the rhino and scraping meat from the bones, water resources of the expedition diminished and forced the party to load the decomposing carcass and search for water.[6][7]

They chose to head into the direction of the Atlantic coast and reached it close to Cape Cross. From there van der Merwe and his fellows searched southwards for the mouth of Omaruru River. A few miles south of the mouth they discovered a deep sand valley with reed grass growing in it, advertising the presence of fresh water. Van der Merwe liked the place and after delivering the bones and collecting his reward, returned the following Christmas to build a wooden hut in the riverbed. The place became known as Henty se baai (Henty's Bay) and developed into a holiday hideout,[6] mainly because of the abundance of fish at this spot.[5]

In 1951 the South–West Africa Administration mandated to South Africa, proclaimed erven in the Omaruru riverbed that were available for rent, but the erection of permanent structures was not allowed. The first shop was established during that time. A lighthouse was erected to guide ships along the dangerous Namibian coast. In the 1960s mining holes were dug after diamonds had been found in the area on a few occasions. A few years later mining was abandoned due to lack of success. In 1966 it was decided that the riverbed must not be settled in, and property north and south of it was sold. A hotel was built one year later, and the town began to develop.[7]

DRIVING THROUGH HAKAHANA TOWNSHIP IN OMARURU ERONGO REGION NAMIBIA SOUTHERN AFRICA

Omaruru is surrounded by Hakahana, 7de Laan, Sonskyn and Oruue informal settlements (townships) in Erongo Region of central Namibia.

#HakahanaTownshipOmaruru #ErongoNamibia #SouthernAfrica

Omaruru:

The main location in Omaruru is called Ozondje, and it is the original settlement of the area. Ozondje means place of the scorpions in Otjiherero, and Omaruru means something like place of the sour milk. The town is set on one side of the Omaruru River, and Ozondje is on the other. These two areas were originally separated in this way because when the first European settlers came to the area, the Herero gave them the land on the other side of the river because there was something about the grass that made cows' milk be sour, and as cattle farmers the Herero did not want that so they allowed Europeans to settle on that side of the river. There is a newer part of the Omaruru location called Hakahana which means hurry hurry, and is where new displaced people and migrants stay.

The main roads in the locations are paved, but the roads that branch off are dirt. There is a mix of small houses, backyard shacks, and rather nice looking houses in the part of the locations that seem to be older. In the newer areas, most people live in what they call here zinc houses that are small shack-like buildings made out of metal. When people are able to get ahold of clay, they build clay houses. Also, most of the smaller brick houses are built according to the same plan in all the cities in Namibia. The front entrance leads to a living room, to the left is a bed room, forward on the left side is another bedroom, forward on the right leads to a kitchen, and there is another door out the back of the kitchen. Toilets are outside. Living is tough, but people make do with what they have.

Omaruru, whose businesses are predominantly run by Namibians of German descent, has a physical divide with whites predominantly living in the central business district (CBD) while the majority of blacks live in the townships of Ozondje and Hakahana.

The majority of residents of informal settlements are unemployed, while those who were employed earned meagre wages. The condition of living at Hakahana is overcrowded.

Hakahana is situated near the Herero and Damara locations in Omaruru. The place is so named for the great rush that the people moved there with. The settlement was established in 1996, and most people came from the northern regions and nearby farms while others were born in Omaruru.

Hakahana Land Tenure and Ownership:
The land belongs to the Municipality, and even though residents are allowed to stay on this land there is no formal agreement.
Settlement size and Population:
The estimated number of households is 400 and the estimated total population of is 2,500. The informal houses are constructed with corrugated iron. There are also permanent brick houses.
Basic Amenities:
There are ten public prepaid water taps. There is no electricity and no toilets. People use
candles for lighting, paraffin and firewood for cooking. The bush serves as their toilets.
Education, Health and other Social Services:
There are no schools, clinics or other social services except for one crèche. The nearest schools are situated 30 minutes walk form the settlement, and the clinic is about 2.5 km away.
Transport Infrastructure and other Public Services:
There is no constructed road in this settlement and the most common mode of transport is Taxis, while a few others use their own private transport. There are two street lights in the whole settlement. A monthly garbage collection service is available. Other services are accessed in town.
People’s Involvement in Development Activities:
They are not involved in any development, but are willing to participate in future development activities.

Top 5 Luxury Lodges in Sossusvlei | Ultimate Namibia Safari | Africa Incoming

Located in the southern region of the country in Sesriem, Sossusvlei is set within the heart of the park. Sossusvlei itself refers to the clay pan or 'vlei' (an Afrikaans word meaning ‘valley’ or ‘pan’) that is created by a river that flows through the Namib Desert every 5 to 10 years. Mostly dry, the pan rarely fills with water, but it is surrounded by towering dunes of up to 300 metres from the desert floor, and it is this stunning combination of scenery that makes it so enchanting. Interestingly, the word ‘sossus’ also means ‘place of no return’ which you can understand when you are there amidst the isolation of the place; there are no towns nearby, which does however mean that the night’s sky offers you the some of the most incredible star gazing in the world.

Given below are the Top 5 Luxury Lodges in Sossusvlei Sesriem:

00:13 Sossusvlei Desert Lodge: Set amidst an ocean of dunes, rocky outcrops and gravel plains, the utter tranquility and extraordinary clarity of light makes this area one of Africa’s most compelling landscapes. The night skies are heavenly, with the concession bordering the International Dark Sky Reserve of the NamibRand Nature Reserve. A canvas of beauty that invites reconnection with yourself and nature.

01:10 Kwessi Dunes: Kwessi Dunes is located in the NamibRand Nature Reserve, one of southern Africa’s largest private nature reserves. The vast desert plains stretch out in front of the lodge, framed by mountains and the area’s red sand dunes. The lodge has 12 air-conditioned canvas tents, all with thatched roofs, en suite bathrooms, indoor and outdoor showers, and a shaded veranda. Two of the tents are family units, with separate bedrooms that share a bathroom.

01:56 Kulala Desert lodge: Kulala Desert lodge is situated on the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve and in easy reach of the magnificent dunes of Sossusvlei. The lodge offers private a entrance into the Namib- Naukluft National Park and is the closest to Sossusvlei. It draws its inspiration from North Africa with a main guest area incorporating a lounge, bar and dining area. There is a plunge pool for cooling down on simmering Summer days and a wrap- around veranda boasting incredible views of the waterhole in front of the lodge.

02:40 Le Mirage Resort & Spa: Le Mirage Resort & Spa is a unique establishments in the Sossusvlei area. It is situated 21 km from the Sesriem gate to Sossusvlei. This makes it one of the lodges closest to the Sossusvlei and the ideal place to stay when you want to visit the highest dunes in the world.

03:26 Sossusvlei Lodge: Situated at the Entrance Gate to the Namib Naukluft Park, Sossusvlei Lodge offers direct access to the towering red sand dunes, the famous pan of Sossusvlei, the scorched black trees of Dead Vlei and the remarkable depths of the Sesriem Canyon.
