El Dorado Hills, California
El Dorado Hills is an unincorporated census-designated place located in El Dorado County, California, 22 miles east of the state capital of Sacramento. The population was 42,108 at the 2010 census, up from 18,016 at the 2000 census.This population growth is attributed through the combination of actual population increase within the 2000 CDP boundaries and expansion of the boundaries. The area of EDH was expanded from 17.9 square miles in 2000 to 48.606 square miles in 2010.
El Dorado Hills residents and businesses are most closely affiliated with El Dorado County, a generally rural area. However, El Dorado County is part of the Sacramento Metropolitan Area because it is socially and economically integrated with the much larger Sacramento County and especially the City of Folsom.
El Dorado Hills lies about 18.6 miles from the 1848 gold find site in Coloma, the impetus for the California Gold Rush. Gold was washed down the South Fork of the American River, into areas now in El Dorado Hills and Folsom, but farming and ranching supplanted the Gold Rush. Portions of two Pony Express routes in this area from 1860-1861 remain as modern El Dorado Hills roads. El Dorado Hills includes the longest surviving section of the Lincoln Highway, the first U.S. transcontinental highway. This section, part of the Pioneer Branch, passes through historic Clarksville and is the predecessor of the modern US 50 route.
The 2010 CDP has a land area of 48.606 square miles, more than double the size of its boundaries in 2000 CDP, which was 17.9 square miles.
Rancho Cordova, California
Rancho Cordova is a city in Sacramento County, California, United States which incorporated in 2003. It is part of the Sacramento Metropolitan Area. The population of Rancho Cordova was 64,776 at the 2010 census. Rancho Cordova is the Sacramento area's largest employment sub-center, attracting over 50,000 commuters. The city is served by Sacramento Regional Transit's various bus lines and the Gold Line light rail line, though fewer than 0.1 percent of commuters to Rancho Cordova use the line according to the US Census Bureau's American Community Survey.
Originally called Mayhew's Crossing and Hangtown Crossing (c. 1855) during the Gold Rush era, the area was renamed Mayhew Station and Mills Station (c. 1900), respectively. The city itself was named after the Cordova Vineyard, which was located in the center of the Rancho Rio de los Americanos land grant. Original names of the town included Cordova Vineyards and Cordova Village, before it was officially named Rancho Cordova when a post office was established in the community in 1955. In the Gold Rush era of mid 19th century California, certain Placer mining activities took place in the Rancho Cordova environs, some traces of which disturbance are extant. The elevation of the generally level terrain is approximately 118 feet above mean sea level. Lone Star Gravel Company and other companies have historically extracted younger gravels at depths of 30 to 40 feet without encountering groundwater, which is characteristically found at about 100 feet . Partially confined groundwater generally flows to the southwest.For many years, Rancho Cordova was the Community called Mills, located in the eastern part of the Brighton Township.
The City of Rancho Cordova is 33.9 miles, 33.5 being land, the rest of it being water.
Larkspur, California
Larkspur is a city in Marin County, California, United States. Larkspur is located 3 miles south of San Rafael, at an elevation of 43 feet. As of the 2010 Census, the city's population was 11,926. Larkspur is located north of San Francisco near Mount Tamalpais. Larkspur's Police Department is shared with that of the neighboring Corte Madera and town of San Anselmo as the Central Marin Police Authority. Intersecting Larkspur's downtown is Madrone Canyon, a residential area amidst a redwood grove.
Larkspur has a total area of 3.24 sq mi 3.03 sq mi of it is land and 0.22 sq mi of it is water. Larkspur's population was approximately 12,417 in 2015.
The Gold Mines Of Beale Air Force Base - Part 1 of 2
In this review of the gold mines of Beale Air Force Base (located in Yuba County, California) and its mining history, we’ll focus on Lone Tree Hill in the first video (The next video will cover more ground)... Unfortunately, the famous tree that gave the hill its name no longer stands. However, Lone Tree Hill has been a landmark since the pioneer days. Then, it served as a beacon for travelers looking for Spenceville Road as its golden glow against the dark tree-studded hills could be seen for a distance of twenty miles. Today, the PAVE PAWS site is located on the southwestern slope of Lone Tree Hill.
During California’s Gold Rush, any place where quartz was found was thought possible of hosting great gold deposits. As such, the quartz outcroppings on the top of Lone Tree Hill were noticed with growing excitement back in the 1870s. At least three mines were started on the hill, two by shafts from the top and one by an adit into the side. Small pushcarts carried the ore and waste rock out from the adit, which, of course, is still there facing the base. As you’ll see, there is a shaft running down toward the adit from the top of the hill, but we confirmed that these do not connect underground.
The Wheatland Free Press of March 13, 1875 announced the opening of a mine named the Munroe Mine at Lone Tree Hill, and in October of 1876 reported:
“The shaft on the Munroe Ledge is 100 feet deep, rock is getting better all of the time, and there will be a very rich paying mine soon. Work on the shaft at the Lone Tree Mine [a second mine] is also progressing. A mill will soon be erected near the Munroe Mine and hoisting works put up on the Lone Tree. The owners of the Ore Grande mine [also on Lone Tree Hill] have workmen engaged in running a tunnel.”
Such were the hopes of the times…
The Lone Tree Mine is also mentioned in Thompson and West’s History of Yuba County, published in 1879:
“A small two-stamp mill is being worked at the Lone Tree Mine, on Lone Tree Hill, in Rose Bar Township, that pays in a small way.”
Even though mining on a grand scale was never realized at Lone Tree, whenever it rained small amounts of gold were found in the many gullies on the sides of the hill. Stories are told of couples on this hill who picked up enough gold in this way to make a meager living.
Later when the 13th Armored Division used the 86,000 acres of Camp Beale as its training ground, Lone Tree Hill again became a landmark. Mr. J.B. Teel of St. Louis was stationed here during World War II as a tank driver and mechanic. He wrote,
“The Camp should enshrine that tree, because that hill is where we would always wind up our field problems and get our usual 'chewing out' for what we did or didn’t do. There was a saying that if anyone cut the tree down on Lone Tree Hill, he would be shot!”
Butch, a beloved fox terrier mascot of the 59th Armored Infantry Regiment, was buried below the “Lone Tree” after he died in 1943.
The lone tree fell sometime after 1960.

Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.
These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that colorful niche of our history is gone forever.

Marysville, California
Marysville is the county seat of Yuba County, California, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, Marysville's population was 12,072, reflecting a decrease of 196 from the 12,268 counted in the 2000 Census. It is included in the Yuba City Metropolitan Statistical Area, often referred to as the Yuba-Sutter Area after the two counties, Yuba and Sutter. The metropolitan statistical area is part of the Greater Sacramento area.
In 1842, John Sutter leased part of his Rancho New Helvetia land to Theodore Cordua, a native of Mecklenburg in Germany, who raised livestock and, in 1843, built a home and trading post he called New Mecklenburg.[5] The trading post and home was situated at what would later become the southern end of 'D' Street, Marysville's main street. In 1844, the Mexican government granted Cordua his own land grant, Rancho Honcut.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.6 square miles.
Flooding has been a major concern for the city for many years.
Marysville is 40 miles north of Sacramento and located in the Sacramento Valley. The city is bordered on the south and east by the Yuba River and the west by the Feather River, with the two rivers converging just southwest of the city. In years of significant snow runoff from the nearby Sierra Nevada range or heavy rain from winter storms, these two rivers pose a serious flooding risk to the city.
Berkeley, California
Berkeley is a city on the east shore of San Francisco Bay in northern Alameda County, California. It is named after the 18th-century Anglo-Irish bishop and philosopher George Berkeley. It borders the cities of Oakland and Emeryville to the south and the city of Albany and the unincorporated community of Kensington to the north. Its eastern border with Contra Costa County generally follows the ridge of the Berkeley Hills. The 2010 census recorded a population of 112,580.
Berkeley is home to the oldest campus in the University of California system, the University of California, Berkeley, and to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, which is managed and operated by the University. It also has the Graduate Theological Union, one of the largest religious studies institutions in the world. It is one of the most politically liberal cities in the United States.
The site of today's City of Berkeley was the territory of the Chochenyo/Huchiun band of the Ohlone people when the first Europeans arrived.Evidence of their existence in the area include pits in rock formations, which they used to grind acorns, and a shellmound, now mostly leveled and covered up, along the shoreline of San Francisco Bay at the mouth of Strawberry Creek. Other artifacts were discovered in the 1950s in the downtown area during remodeling of a commercial building, near the upper course of the creek.
The first people of European descent (most of whom were born in America, and many of whom were of mixed ancestry) arrived with the De Anza Expedition in 1776.Today, this is noted by signage on Interstate 80, which runs along the San Francisco Bay shoreline of Berkeley. The De Anza Expedition led to establishment of the Spanish Presidio of San Francisco at the entrance to San Francisco Bay (the Golden Gate), which is due west of Berkeley.

When the Chinese first came over to the US, numerous Chinatowns were built across Northern California, serving as important Chinese communities that offered protection, entertainment, and survival for the early Chinese pioneers. Marysville's Chinatown became one of the largest and liveliest Chinatown in all of California due to its proximity to the Northern Gold Mines (Colfax, Grass Valley, etc.), and also the accessibility to reach Marysville from San Francisco.
During its golden days, Marysville's Chinatown had schools, shops, brothels, gambling dens, temples, etc. The streets were filled with activities, and Chinatown celebrated many festivals significant to the Chinese culture. One of the most important characteristics of Marysville Chinatown was that it was able to avoid arson and racist violence, which also drew Chinese refuges from nearby Chinatowns such as Chico and Oroville, which were both destroyed by racist MFs. However, even a prominent Chinatown like Marysville couldn't withstand the depletion of gold, which forced many folks to move out in search of new opportunities.

Over the weekend I was fortunate to witness the 142nd Bok Kai Festival, one of the oldest celebrations amongst the Chinese Community in the US! Bok Kai is the God of the North Stream (or Chinese Water God) who was worshipped by the early Chinese inhabitants of Marysville, in hopes to protect the community against the constant flooding from the Yuba/Feather River.
The Bok Kai Festival is a 2 day event featuring a parade on Day 1, and Bomb Day on Day 2. Even though I grew up in San Francisco's Chinatown, I have never heard of this festival until I became a Chinatown Enthusiast and found out about the Chinese history in Marysville, California. Join me as I get to experience this festive event for the first time ever in my life!
