0:51 Lutheran Church
1:20 Mbangura Market
2:07 Railway station
2:48 Horse riding club
3:11 Moordkoppie
3:45 Bonus: old Okahandja

The Church of Peace (Friedenskirche Deutsche Evangelische-Lutherische Gemeinde), a Lutheran-Evangelistic church built in 1952, and also the house of Dr. Vedder, one of the oldest in town, are located in old part of Okahandja.

Just south of the post office, on Hoof Street, is a building known as the old stronghold, or the old fort. This was the town's old police station, started in 1894, though now it is empty and falling into disrepair.

Mbangura Market

This craft market is Okahandja’s best known tourist attraction. Woodcarvers from all over, and as far as the Kavango Region of north-eastern Namibia, who practice their ancient skills come here to sell their goods. Since wood is not resistant to the wear and tear of time, wood sculptures survive less well than other forms of art and are therefore an important hidden element in the art history of many cultures. The wood-and-thatch market is situated next to the main road at the town’s entrance and in town center.

Railway station

It serves the town of Okahandja and is part of the TransNamib Railway.

Okahandja is situated on the Windhoek - Swakopmund line, built in 1902 during Imperial Germany's colonial rule of German South West Africa. In 1914 this line was extended to Walvis Bay.

Okahandja is connected to a number of towns in the north of Namibia via the railway junction in Kranzberg, which lies on the Windhoek-Swakopmund-Walvis Bay route, and to the south and east of Namibia via Windhoek.

Moordkoppie

The historical animosity between the Nama and the Herero had its most emphatic expression at the Battle of Moordkoppie (Afrikaans for Murder Hill) on 23 August 1850. During the battle, 700 Herero under the command of chief Katjihene were massacred by Nama forces. Half of the victims were women and children, whose bodies were dismembered for the copper bangles on their arms and legs. The scene of this tragedy was a small rocky hill near the centre of town between the B2 and the railway line, 500 m north of the Gross Barmen turn-off.

Reit Club Okahandja - Horse riding club
In 1909 the club house was built by Dr. Fock, the Mayor of Okahandja, to be his residence. In 1958 it was made into a club house and stable yard called Reit Club Okahandja.

The Reit Club has numerous facilities for the equestrian sport, consisting of 120 stables, paddocks, a club house, a residence, jumping and dressage facilities with a cafe and a large spectator pavilion.

A selection of Namibia lodges by your Namibia experts, Indigo Safaris

Indigo Safaris creates bespoke safari itineraries in southern and eastern Africa. We have been doing this since 2009. Our website has loads of useful destination information and insights, as well as numerous sample itineraries across different price ranges. Check out

Our founder's first trip to Namibia was in 1997, and he visited on three more occasions before setting up Indigo Safaris. Since then, he has led half-a-dozen trips there with clients, and visited another five times on educational and inspection tours. Amongst our small team of safari experts, two have worked as guides there, and two more have visited multiple times. Safe to say, we know Namibia intimately, and have our finger on it's healthy pulse.

Although the whole country is essentially a desert of one sort or another, the diversity of landscapes, coupled with an excellent and safe road network (75% gravel roads) makes for a jaw-dropping road-trip, or a stunning flying safari. The diversity is not just in the landscapes, there a great mix of wildlife, cultures, history, and activities. Find out more here

DRIVING THROUGH OKAHANDJA NAU-AIB TOWNSHIP OKAHANDJA NAMIBIA SOUTHERN AFRICA PART 3

Video of driving through one of townships in Namibia - Nau-Aib/Five Rand Camp, located just outside of small town Okahandja in central Namibia. This is the third part of three.

#FiveRandNauAibTownship #OkahandjaCentralNamibia #SouthernAfrica

Okahandja:

Five (Vyf) Rand Camp is an informal settlement outside of Okahandja, located north of Windhoek in the Okahandja constituency of the Otjozondjupa region of Namibia. Vyf rand is an Afrikaans phrase that translates to five rand. The name originates from the initial rental fee of five rand per month tenant farmers paid for a small plot of land on large farms in Namibia.

Home of one of the poorest communities in Namibia, Vyf Rand camp has been the focus of various social projects: a primary school, a soup kitchen, and HIV/AIDS awareness programs.

The settlement was a filming location for Where Others Wavered, a film about the life of Sam Nujoma – Namibia's first president – touted as one of the country's most ambitious film projects.

The community of Five Rand got it's name when the farmer who owned the land charged people five rand ( U.S. 50 cents) a month to live there and use his water, at the time Namibia was under mandate of South Africa.

The land now belongs to the city of Okahandja, and plots can be purchased for 700 to 900 US$. Most people however never achieve ownership and just set up their tin home on whatever plot is available.

Five Rand is not just a place where people have their homes, but there are also many business, churches, a few preschools, and one primary school.

For the last thirty years an informal settlement on the outskirts of Okahandja has retained the name Fyf Rand Kamp – Five Rand Camp.
While residents were preparing for the festive season in Okahandja, 70km north of Windhoek, fifteen Oshiwambo-speaking construction workers completed their contract with the Department of Water Affairs (now called NamWater) at the Von Bach dam and found themselves without a place to live. They approached the owner of a nearby plot, a Mr Andries Pretorius, to request permission to stay on his land with their families. Mr Pretorius was sympathetic. Realising that it was the municipality’s responsibility to assist them, however, he accompanied them to the Okahandja municipality to ask for assistance. Their plea fell on deaf ears. The municipality informed the men that there was no space for them and that Mr Pretorius was not permitted to let them live on his land, thus beginning a protracted dispute with the municipality.

With no help from the authorities, Mr Pretorius allowed them to stay on his land temporarily. He had bought the plot with the intention of establishing feed lots, but had not yet progressed with his plan. At the beginning of the year, he approached the municipality again to request assistance for the group of workers but had no more success than the first time. He also contacted Water Affairs, and although they listened sympathetically, they were unable to offer any assistance. He allowed the men and their families to continue staying on his land. After a while, he requested R5 from each person per month to cover the costs of supplying water. It wasn’t long before people began to refer to the camp as Fyf Rand Kamp.

DRIVING THROUGH OKAHANDJA NAU-AIB TOWNSHIP OKAHANDJA NAMIBIA SOUTHERN AFRICA PART 1

Video of driving through one of townships in Namibia - Nau-Aib/Five Rand Camp, located just outside of small town Okahandja in central Namibia. This is the first part of three.

#OkahandjaNauAibTownship #CentralNamibia #SouthernAfrica

Mbangura woodcarvers craft market in Okahandja, Namibia, southern Africa

Video of November 2021 stop at Okahandja's Mbangura woodcarvers craft market in Namibia, southern Africa.

#CraftMarket #Okahandja #Namibia

Okahandja:

Namibia is brimful of craft markets and you’ll be sure to find many of them on your travels throughout the country. Keep an eye open as you enter some of the small towns, as craft markets are usually found there. There are also monthly and annual markets to check out. Most of them offer something a little different from the community craft markets, but no doubt all of them will provide you with something special to take home.

Mbangura woodcarvers craft market is Okahandja is the best known tourist attraction. Woodcarvers from all over Namibia, and as far as the Kavango Region of north-eastern part of the country, who practice their ancient skills come here to sell their goods. Since wood is not resistant to the wear and tear of time, wood sculptures survive less well than other forms of art and are therefore an important hidden element in the art history of many cultures. The wood-and-thatch market is situated next to the main road at the town’s entrance and exit. Choose from a wide variety of hand-carved wooden artefacts such as animals, bowls or jewellery boxes.

GROSS BARMEN | Namibia | Cinematic travel vlog

Enjoy our trip and stay at Gross Barmen, Namibia which is located near Okahandja, some 85km from Namibia's capital Windhoek and approximately 1 hours drive.

The first Rhenish mission was established here at Gross Barmen in late 1844. They named the place Barmen after the town Barmen (today part of Wuppertal) in Germany where the headquarters of the Rhenish Missionary Society were located.

The recreational centre at Gross Barmen was built in 1977. The water of the hot spring comes from a depth of 2,500 m. It exits the ground at 65 °C and is cooled down to around 40 °C for the thermal bath.

Gross Barmen is managed by Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR). Besides the thermal bath, a restaurant and overnight accommodation is available.

This is our 2nd travel vlog, shot it in April 2022.
