Things to Do in Laredo TX: Texas Travel Series

Laredo marks the boundary between Texas and Mexico. Even though Laredo is on the Texas side, Mexican roots are clearly evident.

It is important to point out that Laredo was founded in 1755 but did not become part of Texas until 1846. This explains why Laredo’s history is so intertwined with Mexican culture and how, even now, the culture, traditions, language, and ideas are still reflected today throughout the city streets, in community events, the language, restaurants, stores, and the people.

We wanted to share all the visit-worthy sights and important places in Laredo, so you make the most of your next Texas adventure! These tips come from locals and tourists, so you’ll get the best of both worlds!

Note: Before we begin, you should know that, although Laredo sits on the edge of the Mexico border, the overall security risk in the city is low. Laredo was ranked the 13th safest city in America by SmartAsset. While there are minor thefts and property crimes, violent crime is low, and the cartel war is not a problem for citizens or tourists. You can rest, safe and secure, knowing that Laredo might just be one of the safest towns you’ll ever visit in the US (much to people’s surprise).

Casa Blanca was named for the white limestone bluffs and cliffs that border the water. This gorgeous park has plenty to offer, including hiking, walking, and biking trails. You can also rent boats if you want to explore the lake further.

Truly one of the most beautiful spots in Laredo, Texas, this state park is a great place to visit any time of year. In the spring and summer months, you can go swimming in Lake Casa Blanca or sunbathe on the white sand beach.

Day Trip to Laredo ???? (FULL EPISODE) S8 E11

Laredo is also one of Texas's most historic cities as well as the gateway city to Mexico, making for one GRANDE trip. You can see the passion of these folks in the homemade foods, well-preserved culture and even their annual George Washington birthday celebration. This town is filled with the best of both Texas and Mexico!

To really immerse yourself in the true culture of Laredo, head to San Bernardo Avenue District where you’ll find tons of Mexican import stores — and my favorite is Basket and Pottery Alley. This store is packed with imports like crushed pink velvet hats, Mexican dresses and brightly colored knick-knacks.

Just walking around the San Agustin de Laredo Historic District, you can learn so much about Laredo’s history. This plaza in the heart of town is surrounded by buildings from the 1700s-1800s, like the San Agustin Cathedral built in 1872, Casa Ortiz which was built in 1830, and La Posada — a hotel that used to be the high school.

At the Republic of the Rio Grande Museum, you can learn about an era in Laredo’s past when it was its own country after the Texas Revolution. The museum, itself, is housed in the Capitol Building for the Republic of the Rio Grande and throughout it, you’ll find artifacts from that era.

This town is also home to the largest George Washington Birthday celebration in America based off a strange origin story containing both Washington and Pocahontas. Unfortunately, since filming, the George Washington Museum, home to the elegant handmade dresses worn by locals each year in the Martha Washington Ball and Pocahontas Pageant, has closed.

Taquitos Ravi is a local family-owned taqueria that was opened across the border 40 years ago but was so popular it opened locations all over Laredo — and thank goodness for that! Stop in for some of the best street tacos you’ve ever tasted — I dare you to try the delicious “tripas” tacos (deep fried intestines). You’ll thank me later!

When you need a pick-me-up, Las Amorosas serves up a mean Pina Preparada, which is a beverage of your choice poured inside a hollowed out pineapple and piled with apples, oranges, gummy bears, and so many other goodies. It’s basically a real-life candy mountain you stick in your mouth!

After a long day of tripping, head to Las Kekas for a truly authentic Mexican dinner. The menu is a tour of Mexico, with famous dishes from each region. I suggest Las Kekas’s signature namesake dish which is basically a fried quesadilla that can come stuffed with 21 different fillings from shrimp to cactus!

Get a different view of Laredo by paddling the Rio Grande where you can see Mexico right across the river! Despite what you may have heard, this river has alot of security to make you feel safe. It’s a peaceful 4 mile run filled with lush vegetation and tons of rare birds like King Fishers and Green Jays.

From Wikipedia:
Laredo (/ləˈreɪdoʊ/ lə-RAY-doh; Spanish: [laˈɾeðo]) is a city in and the county seat of Webb County, Texas, United States, on the north bank of the Rio Grande in South Texas, across from Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Laredo has the distinction of flying seven flags (the flag of the former Republic of the Rio Grande, which is now the flag of the city, in addition to the Six Flags of Texas).

Founded in 1755, Laredo grew from a village to the capital of the short-lived Republic of the Rio Grande to the largest inland port on the Mexican border. Laredo's economy is primarily based on international trade with the United States largest trading partner Mexico, and as a major hub for three areas of transportation - land, rail, and air cargo. The city is on the southern end of I-35, which connects manufacturers in northern Mexico through Interstate 35 as a major route for trade throughout the U.S. It has four international bridges and one railway bridge.

According to the 2020 census, the city's population was 255,205, making it the 11th-most populous city in Texas and third-most populated U.S. city on the Mexican border, after San Diego, California and El Paso, Texas.[8] Its metropolitan area is the 178th-largest in the U.S. and includes all of Webb County, with a population of 267,114. Laredo is also part of the cross-border Laredo-Nuevo Laredo metropolitan area with an estimated population of 636,516.

Laredo is notable for its high Hispanic proportion, which at over 95%, is the highest proportion of Hispanic Americans of any city in the United States outside of Puerto Rico. It is one of the least ethnically diverse cities in the United States. When economic, household, and social diversity are considered, Laredo is the 19th-least diverse of the 313 largest cities in the nation.[citation needed] Texas A&M International University and Laredo College are in Laredo. Laredo International Airport is within the Laredo city limits, while the Quetzalcoatl International Airport is nearby in Nuevo Laredo on the Mexican side.[citation needed]

The biggest festival, Washington's Birthday Celebration, is held during the later part of January and the majority of February, attracting hundreds of thousands of tourists.

Mexico ???????? US ???????? Border Crossing By Foot - Nuevo Laredo to Laredo TX | 197 Countries, 3 Kids

The city of Nuevo Laredo is located on the Mexican side of the border with Laredo Texas in the USA. With so many negative stories shared in the media a lot of Americans are very scared to cross the border into town, and they don’t have the desire to go there either. This is silly. We wanted to see for ourselves what it was like to cross the border by foot, to see if this famous wall that Trump talks about makes sense, and find out if it’s as scary as people make it out to be. Spoilers: It’s a very quiet and tranquil town.

In Nuevo Laredo, the folks are all busy with their daily activities. The streets are sleepy and at times chaotic, but in reality, the town is pleasant to visit. Everyone is minding their own business and living their day to day lives.

The message that we want to convey is that it’s not a very big city or full of natural wonders, it’s just that this city has garnered so much negative attention that people are so scared to cross the border and pass through here which is sad for the friendly people living here.

Enjoy the video and let us know where you're watching from!!!
