What are the best seaside towns in the United Kingdom? New towns are developing at the seaside across the UK in addition to those ancient towns and cities. All of these towns and cities are worming their way into the hearts of tourists from home and abroad. With due respect to these towns, and out of a deep sense of duty, we want to identify which of these towns are the best so that we can help the decision-making process for those having reasons to consider seaside towns. On the basis of that, we present to you the 10 best seaside towns in the UK.
Please note that most of these best towns in the UK have at one time or the other been the best in England.
10. Swanage, Dorset, England
The tenth place we’ll consider as one the best seaside towns in the UK is Swanage in South West of England. The town has been a popular seaside resort since Victorian times. Up till now, families have continued to enjoy its calm shallow beach. This seaside is also one of the 10 best seaside resorts in the UK.
With its panoramic views, the seaside resort offers relaxing luxurious holidays in self-catering accommodation in caravans and luxury hot tub lodges. If you want to own a holiday home, they’re available here with unrivaled views across the bay. The town is about one kilometer from the leisurely beautiful Swanage Railway. Its proximity to this and other parks, beaches, and castles makes it a good choice.
9. St Davids, Pembrokeshire, Wales
Stepping out of England, we find a small city and community in Pembrokeshire known as St Davids. It is the smallest location in the whole of the United Kingdom with city status. 7. Filey, North Yorkshire, England

Truly, this beautiful seaside destination in North Yorkshire deserves a slot here as one of the most popular in the UK. It used to be a fishing village before developing into a popular resort with a very large beach that is playing a remarkable role in popularizing it.
It is quieter than most of its neighbors and most of the other coastal towns. This is because it has enough accommodations, seats, and transportation. There is no need for any rush here. You can just go there and enjoy your peace.

What are the poorest places in the UK? The last thing that’ll come to mind when the UK is mentioned is poverty. It’s not among the countries you’ll associate poverty with. This should be clearly noted as we begin. Yet, not every part of Great Britain has the affluence of London, Edinburgh, or Glasgow. Some places in the UK are poor. We’re here to show you the 10 poorest places in the UK.
These places are the same neighborhood with the biggest shortages of basic social infrastructure and facilities such as playgrounds, parks, pubs, shops, and sports centers. You’ll find some of them among the areas left behind in England, Wales, and Scotland. Authorities have to do something about these 10 poorest places in the UK.
10. Newport, Wales
We’re starting in Wales. One of the poorest places in the UK is a city and county borough in Gwent in Wales. We are referring to Newport which is situated on the River Usk close to the river’s confluence with the Severn Estuary. It is 19 kilometers northeast of Cardiff. Newport’s population of 145,700 at the 2011 census notwithstanding, all is not going on fine with the city. It can’t get past its nagging poverty.
Imagine this: of Newport’s 95 neighborhoods in Newport, 23 currently rank among the most deprived in Wales. Do the math, and you will find out that this is about 24 percent of the authority. That’s the biggest percentage of deprivation in the country.
9. Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland
Wales doesn’t have a monopoly on poor places. Scotland has, at least, one of the 10 poorest places in the UK. You’ll find the ninth on our list in Inverclyde. This is Greenock, a town and administrative center in the Inverclyde council area. The town with a population of 44,248 is located in the west-central Lowlands of Scotland.
As proof of how gripping the poverty state of this town is, its population reduced by almost 3,000 within 10 years. In a report that shows how poor some parts of the nations are, Greenock tops the list. In the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation for 2020, Greenock has the highest number of deprived areas in Scotland.
8. Halton, England
England too has some of the poorest places in the UK and the first of these on this list is the eighth poorest place in the UK, Halton. The district and unitary authority that registers its name on this list has a borough status in Cheshire.
When you consider its ranking as one of the worst areas in England and Wales by a global children's charity that also ranks Halton as one of the worst areas in England and Wales to be a girl, you will understand why Halton slipped into the rank of the 20 most deprived areas in England. Other indices like life expectancy, children poverty which is 25 percent, health inequality, and unemployment rates are not in a positive light for this district.
7. Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
We’re back in Wales to find Merthyr Tydfil, the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, as the seventh of the 10 poorest places in the UK. The town administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is about 37 kilometers north of Cardiff. Often called Merthyr, the town believed to be named after Tydfil, daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, has a population of 43,820.
This town seems to be hitting above its weight as the go-to place for those looking for gloomy job news. As of March 2018, the unemployment rate was 5.7 percent. Even though it's an iron producer, poor transportation service is the bane of this town that makes it so poor.
6. South Elmsall, England
South Elmsall is a small town and a civil parish lying to the east of Hemsworth with a population of 6,519. When it comes to safety, this town is among the most dangerous of small towns, villages, and cities in West Yorkshire. It’s faring badly in income deprivation, employment deprivation, education, skills and training deprivation, health deprivation, and disability. The 2021 overall crime rate in South Elmsall was 111 crimes per 1,000 people Living in this small town, you will be on a downward spiral of ill health and at the risk of premature death or the impairment of quality of life caused by poor physical or mental health.

What are the most beautiful towns to visit in England? The United Kingdom is obsessed with beautiful surroundings and countryside. England is attempting to blaze the trail and lead the other parts of the Kingdom. Yes, many of the most beautiful towns in the world are in England. Just anyone will have a hard time selecting the most beautiful towns in England to visit. However, we will attempt to list 12 of these based on certain yardsticks that all or most of us can agree upon. Some of these towns are coastal, rural, or castle towns. What we’re sure of is that almost everyone will find one or two of these beautiful towns attractive enough to see something lovely there during the next vacation.
12. Burford, Oxfordshire
Our starting point is Burford, a town on the River Windrush in the West Oxfordshire district of Oxfordshire. Tucked in the Cotswold Hills, Burford is often called the 'gateway' to the Cotswolds, and for good reasons.
This town derives its name from the Old English words ‘burh’ which can mean a ‘fortified town,’ ‘a hilltown and ford,’ and ‘the crossing of a river.’ That connotative meaning draws some mental picture, not so? Burford has been listed among the most picturesque towns in England, with its medieval bridge and stone houses together with the attractive Tudor and Georgian frontages.
11. Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire
Tewkesbury, a medieval market town and civil parish is the next. The Gloucestershire northern town has a significant history in the Wars of the Roses. Located at the confluence of the River Severn and the River Avon, the town is on the border with Worcestershire.
This town with a character all of its own is one of the few places in the Cotswold with buildings of black and white half-timbered. It’s a town to visit by those who love spending time on riverbanks.
10. Painswick, Gloucestershire
We still have good places to visit in Gloucestershire. This time it’s the beautiful town of Painswick. Mainly constructed of locally quarried Cotswold stone, the small town is known for the local Rococo Garden.
This is a budget-friendly town where you can explore a lot during your visit. That’s why we consider it one of the most beautiful towns in England to visit. You have a variety of attractive things to see such that you may be tempted to extend your vacation. Painswick Beacon, for example, is an apt place to go cycling and hiking.
9. Bakewell, Derbyshire
This market town and civil parish is a lovely place in England to visit by anyone who appreciates its local Bakewell pudding. There is no shortage of bakeries dispensing this delicious pudding. However, you can feel some difference if you buy your Bakewell Pudding while visiting the Old Original Bakewell Pudding shop. You can delightfully sample this delicious dessert of pastry with jam and frangipane and top it with toasted almonds.
Its market which is held every Monday is also a must-try if you’re in the town so that you can have something like unique plants, giftware, homeware, fashion items to tools, and carpets to take home.
8. Sandwich, Kent
We come across a Kent location on this our list. The historic town of Sandwich which is also a civil parish in the Dover District of Kent lies on the River Stour. It’s a cool place to visit as one of the Cinque Ports. You can still see many of the original medieval buildings in Sandwich.
Visitors to Sandwich can enjoy nature reserves where two world-class golf courses, namely Royal St George's and Prince's are situated. There are educational and cultural events to witness in this town with Bird Observatory and Nature Reserves which play home to varieties of birds, flora and fauna.

American Visits Bamburgh Castle #england
On my first visit to Bamburgh in 2010, we drove by the castle and I said “oh that looks like a nice place to visit, we need to come back!”
Then in 2021 we returned to Northumberland and I came to Bamburgh again, only to discover that the castle was CLOSED to the public because Harrison Ford, along with the rest of the cast and crew were in the castle filming the latest Indiana Jones movie, called Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. It is allegedly the last installment in the Indy franchise. Coincidentally, that movie will be released in the next couple weeks, and here I am finally publishing the vlog of my 3rd visit to Bamburgh... in 2022 when I was “third time lucky” and finally toured inside the amazing Bamburgh Castle!

Lindisfarne Priory [4K] Holy Island | Places to Visit in Northumberland |
Lindisfarne Priory on Holy Island was one of the most important centres of early Christianity in Anglo-Saxon England. It is still a place of pilgrimage today, the dramatic approach across the causeway adding to the fascination of the site.
Follow in the footsteps of saints to the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, founded by St Aidan in 635 AD in which the Lindisfarne Gospels were written. The existing ruins are the remains of the priory re-established in Norman times as a Benedictine monastery which came to ruin in 1536 under Henry VIII. It is now managed by English Heritage.
The extensive ruins visible today are dominated by the 12th century priory church, which probably stands on the same spot as its Anglo Saxon predecessor. The associated monastic buildings were modified in the later Middle Ages in response to the changing needs and numbers of the monks.
The church was built by about 1150. Changes in the stonework suggest that the east end, crossing and two bays of the nave were completed first; the nave was then extended and the west front built in a second phase. Its architecture recalls that of the Romanesque cathedral at Durham, to reinforce the links between Lindisfarne and its mother-church.
The west front of the church was flanked on both sides by tall corner turrets. Battlements and cross-shaped arrowloops were added in the mid 14th century when the whole priory was fortified in response to the outbreak of war with the Scots.
The four arms of the church meet under the famous ‘rainbow arch’, a rib from the high crossing vault that survived when the central tower collapsed in the late 18th century.
At the east end, where the altar was located, foundations can be seen of the first, early 12th-century presbytery apse. This was demolished in the later 12th century when the presbytery was doubled in length and finished with a square end.
The adjacent stone buildings provided living quarters for the medieval monks and were built in the second half of the 12th century after the church had been completed. The whole complex was extensively reconstructed in the mid 14th century with alterations to the hall and buildings of the south range.
The southern end of the hall is protected by a substantial fortified gateway, with a defended entrance or barbican. The gateway enabled the gatekeeper to control access to the hall and inner courtyard and to defend it if the outer courtyard came under attack.
At the entrance to the priory is the medieval parish church of St Mary. Between the priory and the parish church is a large stone socket base for a monumental cross. This may be of Anglo Saxon date, and in its original position.
Just offshore is St Cuthbert’s Isle, the site of the 7th century hermitage used by Cuthbert and his successors as a retreat. The island is accessible on foot at low tide and the footings of low walls are still clearly visible under the turf.

This historic priory was one of the first outposts of Christianity in England, founded by St. Aidan in the 7th century. The exquisite Lindisfarne Gospels, illuminated here in the early 8th century, are now in the British Library.
HISTORY
Around 635 AD a group of Irish monks under St Aidan were invited by Oswald, King of Northumbria, to settle on the tidal island of Lindisfarne, or Holy Island as it is known today. Aidan and his fellows, though Irish by birth, came from the Celtic Christian centre established on the island of Iona, off the west coast of Scotland.
The most famous of the early Bishops of Lindisfarne was Cuthbert, who came to Lindisfarne in the 670s AD. Cuthbert tried to reform the community along Roman rather than Celtic lines, but the monk's objected. Cuthbert withdrew to a life of prayer on an offshore island. The king pressured Cuthbert to return, which he did in 685 AD when he was named Bishop.
Cuthbert died in 687 AD but when his coffin was exhumed 11 years later his body was found to be in a perfect state of preservation. The monks declared that the purity of Cuthbert's remains was a sign of his saintliness, so he was reburied in a large shrine. Miracles were reported at Cuthbert's, and Lindisfarne became a centre of pilgrimage.
During this period of growing wealth and prestige, Lindisfarne produced one of the great works of art in Celtic Britain; the illuminated manuscript known as the Lindisfarne Gospels. Created from about 710-725 AD, the Gospels are an extraordinary example of early Christian art.
With pilgrims came wealth, grants of land and gifts from kings, but that very wealth made Lindisfarne a target for Viking raiders. The isolation from the mainland of Northumbria that made Lindisfarne so attractive to the early monks also made it more vulnerable to attack from the sea.
The best castles in Northumberland with kids
There's nowhere in the UK quite like Northumberland if you love castles and beaches (there are even castles ON the beach). The trick is which ones to fit into your trip. I've picked my top five castles if you're visiting Northumberland with kids.
1️⃣ Bamburgh Castle - set high above the dunes, you can explore the medieval Great Hall and historic rooms through its long history, walk the battlements, man the cannon to fight off invaders from the sea and explore the grounds, before heading down to the beach to make sandcastles.
2️⃣ Alnwick Castle - familiar to any Harry Potter fan, there are centuries of history here too. Home to the powerful Percy family, we headed into the state rooms, checked out the Dragon Quest experience, discovered some of the family activities and filming locations, plus a quick broomstick lesson.
3️⃣ Lindisfarne Castle - not the most exciting of the castles, if I'm honest, but the views from the top are spectacular, and Lindisfarne is simply beautiful. Take a walk out to the castle and the nearby gardens, even if you don't go in.
4️⃣ Dunstanburgh Castle - now in ruins, although you can still climb one of the towers, it's the location which sets Dunstanburgh apart. Walk along the cliff path from Craster, where you could spot dolphins in the waves, then after exploring continue on to Embleton Bay, perhaps my favourite Northumberland beach.
5️⃣ Warkworth Castle - if you know your Shakespeare, the opening scenes of Henry IV Part II are set here, and it was the birthplace of Harry Hotspur - another of the powerful Percy family. Spot the lion statues before heading into the massive keep, then go for a walk in the grassy moat.
