The island of Elba is the largest of the Tuscan islands and embodies the charm and exclusivity of an area rich in nature, history, and civilization from the ancient Etruscan, Roman and medieval people.
Portoferraio, the capital, and almost mandatory docking for those arriving on Elba. This town is the most populated on the island and holds great treasures of Elban culture.
Remembrance of the ancient Romans is the remains of Villa della Linguella, at the end of the seafront, and of Villa delle Grotte, on the provincial road that connects Portoferraio with Porto Azzurro.
From the Middle Ages, all the charm of the domination of the De 'Medici family remained. Cosimo I de 'Medici had an impregnable fortress built which is still perfectly visible today.
To commemorate the presence of the Emperor of France, Napoleon, who was forced into a long exile on Elba, there are the Napoleonic museums in the Villa Dei Mulini, inside the historic center, and in Villa San Martino, just outside the city.
Another place rich in history is the Volterraio Castle, on the homonymous road that connects the municipality of Rio Elba with Magazzini. Built by the Pisans, during their domination, as a sighting place, today it is an essential destination for trekking lovers and for those who want to admire a magnificent view over the central part of the island.
It seems incredible but a few meters away there are realities so different from each other that Elba is like made up of many small worlds. Eight municipalities: Portoferraio, Marciana, Marciana Marina, Campo Nell Elba, Porto Azzurro, Rio Marina, Capoliveri, Rio Elba seem to be small worlds apart from each one with its culture, traditions, and also the linguistic and architectural cadence of the historic centers.

The diversity of tourism in Egypt and what inspires you to visit it
Speaker: Walaa Ali – Postdoc Fulbright Visiting Scholar - Bureau of Economic Geology
Egypt is located in the northeastern corner of Africa and South-Western Asia. It has always been known for its ancient history of pyramids, pharaohs, temples, and great monuments. It has the world's biggest open-air museum that got one-third of the world's antiquities in Luxor city on the east bank of the Nile. Egypt is also known for its cultural and civilizational heritage that dates back thousands of years to the fourth millennium BC. Its achievements have been preserved in art and antiquities. Egypt contains a diversity of tourist attractions such as religious, geologic, sport, medical, and entertainment tourism. In Egypt, there are different environments, starting from the sea and ending with the desert. It includes the Western and Eastern Desert, the Sinai Peninsula, the natural and artificial lakes, the Red Sea coast, the Mediterranean coast, and more than thirty nature reserves.
This lecture will take us on a journey through Egypt's history as a Cradle of Civilization starting from the Pharaonic era, Greek era, Roman era, Coptic era, Islamic era, and Modern era, by exploring the most beautiful and distinguished places tourists love to visit. Such as Alexandria City, founded in c. 331 BC by Alexander the Great, was the largest in the ancient world before being overtaken by Rome. Furthermore, the lecture will look at the Holy Family trail in Egypt, Moses Mountain, Monastery of Saint Catherine, the Kurdish Ayyubid ruler Salah al-Din Citadel, the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, and the Grand Egyptian Museum that launched in April 2021 and brought a great deal of archaeological tourism to Egypt.
The lecture will also look at the nature preserves that cover almost 12% of Egypt's land area. We will witness Egypt’s wild side and look at the ten best preserves in the country such as the late Pleistocene White Desert, The Jurassic mounds of the Black Desert, and Elba Mountain Reserve. The Elba Mountain Reserve being the largest Egyptian nature reserve located in the Red Sea Governorate, specifically in Halayeb, 1300km from Cairo. In addition, the lecture will take us to the Valley of Golden Mummies during the Greco-Roman period, the colorful canyon at Sharm El-Sheikh, the best location for diving in The Red Sea, and the many shipwrecks hidden in its depths. Besides, the Marsa Matruh governorate will be mentioned that is characterized by seven different colors of seawater, the Great Sand Sea, on the boundary with Lybia. The lecture will finally look at things to know as a tourist visiting Egypt and some recommendations on immersing yourself in the culture.
Walaa Awaad. Ali is a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the Bureau of Economic Geology, The University of Texas at Austin, where she holds a Master of Arts degree in Energy and Earth Resources- Jackson School of Geosciences, UT- Austin (Ford Fellow Scholarship, 2009). Walaa holds a Ph.D. in marine geology from Suez Canal University in Egypt and worked in numerous distinguished positions in geology in Egypt. The turning point in her career came when she began instructing university students as a faculty member at Alexandria University. Walaa primary duties are lecturing and conducting geological fieldwork with students in the Sahara desert. Ali completed her doctoral degree in 2016, and two years later was selected to teach in the petroleum and mining Sciences department as an assistant professor at Matrouh University. She currently holds a position as a lecturer of reservoir sedimentology and petroleum geology, teaching students, leading research teams, and practicing the aspects of geologic field trips she loves most. Her journey comes full circle as she returns to UT as a 2021 Fulbright visiting scholar. She is conducting research using data from the Western Desert of Egypt to analyze the unconventional source rock potentiality of Khatatba Shale at Matruh Basin – to predict whether it will become economical in the future or not and compare it to similar sources in Texas.

Today we visited Lake Placid which is a village in the Adirondack Mountains in Essex County, New York, United States. The village of Lake Placid is near the center of the town of North Elba, 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Plattsburgh. Lake Placid, along with nearby Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake, comprise what is known as the Tri-Lakes region. Lake Placid hosted the 1932 and the 1980 Winter Olympics. Lake Placid also hosted the 1972 Winter Universiade, the 2000 Goodwill Games, and will host the 2023 Winter Universiade.

The Historical Society Depot Museum is in the old train station.
