Venice Carnival 2024 - The feast of the Maries - part 1
The Feast of the Marie, today linked to the Carnival celebrations, is one of the oldest traditions that Venice remembers and renews every year. One of the few public events, hovering between the sacred and the profane, which saw the people with a leading role, and not only as a simple figurant.
But the evolution of the festival also manifested a sort of inter-classist spirit on the part of the Serenissima, while remaining deeply and firmly oligarchic.
The tradition of the Marie seems to date back as far as the 9th century, when on the occasion of the Purification of Mary, usually celebrated on 2 February, 12 young girls and their respective spouses were blessed in the Church of San Pietro di Castello, couples who would be married within the year.
The brides were adorned with precious dresses and opulent jewels donated by the noble families of the city: the jewels were kept in small wooden containers, called arcelle, made for the occasion and skilfully carved by expert craftsmen. The nobles also participated with lavish donations, in order to build the wedding dowry of the girls, always belonging to the people and therefore without great means.
The ceremony was very heartfelt, not only because of its religious value, but because it aimed to increase the number of weddings in a city not very populated, but above all to create a bond not only apparent between the less wealthy classes of society and the high nobility.
The event then highlighted the female figure, very often relegated to a lower level, exalting her role also as wife and mother, as if the fate of society depended on them. And again, it made the protagonist of such a heartfelt celebration the very people who enjoyed few spaces and rare amusements: a sort of placebo but for which the population itself had its good reward, while still keeping alive the feeling of recognition towards the rich families of the Republic.

Montagnana – a medieval fortified town in the Northern Italian region of the Veneto – is officially recognised as one of Italy’s most beautiful borghi.
Surrounded by a mighty defensive wall and with a dramatic Duomo at its heart where frescoes by Giorgione and an altar painting by Veronese are preserved, Montagnana is an excellent choice for a day trip dedicated to art, history, and incredibly good food.
With a history that spans thousands of years and a particularly interesting medieval period, Montagnana experienced many transformations throughout the centuries. In Roman times, the town was a military fortified castrum and served as an official postal station. Then, during the Middle Ages, Montagnana became the battleground of the area’s powerful feudal dynasties.
To this day a large defensive wall circumnavigating the whole town bears witness to the battles that were waged in defense of and against Montagnana.
In 1405, the town was annexed to the Republic of Venice and flourished economically, culturally, and artistically. A testament to it are the many Late Gothic and Renaissance palaces dotted around Montagnana’s historic centre and the priceless works of art in the town’s Duomo and Civic Museum.
In addition to its artistic and historic significance, Montagnana is also the leading centre of production of one of the best dry-cured hams in all of Italy. Known as Prosciutto Veneto Berico-Euganeo DOP and enjoying a Protected Designation of Origin status, the prosciutto of Montagnana is a source of local pride that can be best felt and enjoyed during the prosciutto festival held here in spring each year.
Add to this the many events regularly organised here and the sheer exuberance of beauty that Montagnana is known for and this little town in the Venetian plains easily becomes a must-see place.

Video monografico dalla Chiesetta di San Giorgio a Maser in provincia di Treviso. Il percorso da completare in un'oretta e mezza di cammino non presenta particolari difficoltà. Alla fine non appena si scorge la Chiesetta di San Giorgio si comincia a rimanere a bocca aperta per il panorama che presenta il posto. Assolutamente consigliato da percorrere, e soprattutto da visitare l'intero territorio comunale che presenta molti altri gioielli.

Noale è un comune della città metropolitana di Venezia in Veneto. E' un borgo medievale ricco di storia, nel video è possibile vedere: i resti della Rocca dei tempesta che risale al XII secolo, La Torre dell'Orologio che costituiva l'entrata a levante dell'antico borgo medioevale, la Torre delle Campane che costituiva l'entrata a ponente del borgo e la chiesa dell'assunta.
