Top Things to do in Holguin, Cuba
When Christopher Columbus landed in Holguin Cuba in 1492, he declared it “the most beautiful land human eyes had ever seen” I think he was on to something, the beaches are a dream, the people are warm and friendly, and the sunsets alone make you wish you could stay a few more days. And did I mention the mangos?! They smell so fresh and sweet.
You have to experience the Holguin province and when you do check out these top things:
1. Downtown Holguin – known as the city of parks. They are squares and meeting places for the locals. The best way to go from park to park is by bici taxis. Be sure to see Parque Calixto Garcia where you can visit a local museum Casa Consistorial. Sharing the roads with classic cars is pretty incredible.
2. Next head a bit outside of town to meet Vichi, a farmer who’s father and grandfather passed on the tradition of making a stable of Cuban cuisine Cassava bread which comes from the root of the Cassava plant.
3. Check out some of the artists who call Holguin home. Luis Silva is a local artist who collects scrap metal from closed down factories and sugar mills to make his art. His installations appear throughout Cuba especially at hotels and galleries in Holguin.
At Cuadernos Papiro you’ll meet Boris who’s passion is making beautiful paper from recycled scraps. One of my favorite stops was at the Fabrica de Organo, the only mechanical organ factory in Cuba and Latin America. The organs were an attraction at carnivals and large events all over Cuba. There you’ll Antonio Enrique who has been playing the organ for the last 40 years. The Neon Theater is another must see.
4. A short 45 minute drive will get you to Gibara. A pretty special place right by the sea. Fishermen use only their hands and nets to fish.

LE SITE
Cet hôtel tout inclus de 283 chambres est situé dans la ville de Pilón, dans la province de Granma, à une distance de 98 km de l'aéroport Sierra Maestra.
Il est entouré par les majestueuses montagnes de la Sierra Maestra. Le site n'est pas très grand et est divisé en deux sections: Marea del Portillo et Farallon del Caraibe.
Les deux sites sont reliés par une service constant de navette.
En tant que clients de cet hôtel, nous avons accès aux installations et commodités de ces deux sections.

La section Farallon del Caraibe, située à flanc de montagne, a été construite une dizaine d'années après la section Marea del Portillo. Elle est par ailleurs plus luxueuse.
CHAMBRES
Nous n'étions pas logés dans cette section. Cependant, nous avons visité quelques chambres et avons noté que celles-ci étaient de qualité supérieure.
Elles sont plus récentes, mieux aménagées et plus spacieuses.
Elles ont les commodités suivantes: un très grand lit ou deux lits doubles, tables de chevet, bureau, téléviseur, téléphone, coffre-fort, mini-réfrigérateur, garde-robe et air climatisé.
La salle de bain comporte un lavabo ainsi qu'un petit miroir, toilette, douche, sèche-cheveux ainsi que tous les produits d'usage quotidien.
ÉLECTRICITÉ
220 volts. Il y a aussi du 110 volts dans la salle de bain, mais exclusivement pour les rasoirs et petits appareils électriques.
RESTAURANTS
La section Farallon del Caraibe comprend trois restaurants et deux snack-bars.
Le restaurant La Colina offre des repas sous forme de buffet. Il est climatisé et offre une cuisine internationale. On peut également y manger sur la terrasse extérieure dont la vue sur le lagon est époustouflante.
La restaurant à la carte El Criollo est accessible sur réservation seulement. Ce restaurant cubain est climatisé.
Le restaurant à la carte Bella Vista est accessible sur réservation seulement. Il propose des grillades. Il est situé en plein air. Cependant, il y a des ventilateurs au plafond.
Le sack-bar de la plage (Ranchón) ainsi que celui de la piscine servent des hot-dogs, des hamburgers ainsi que des frites.
BARS
Il y a trois bars. Le premier (La Faralla) est situé dans le hall d'entrée, le second (La Roca) est situé à la piscine et le troisième (Las Brisas) est situé à proximité de la plage.
PISCINE
La piscine est vraiment très jolie . On y retrouve plusieurs chaises longues ainsi que des parasols.
La terrasse à proximité offre une superbe vue panoramique sur la baie ainsi que sur les montagnes de la Sierra Maestra.
LA PLAGE
Cette section n'est pas située directement sur la plage. Comme elle est située à flanc de montagne, il faut donc descendre une cinquantaine de marches et ensuite effectuer une petite balade pour y arriver.
La plage est très longue et composée de sable volcanique (sable gris). Elle fait face à une petite baie.
Cependant, il semblerait que la plage dans cette section est plutôt boueuse alors qu'elle est beaucoup plus convenable dans la section du Marea.
Le sable devient extrêmement chaud durant la journée. Il faut donc porter des chaussures pour éviter de se brûler les pieds.
Il y a très peu de chaises sur cette plage et elles sont en plastique. Donc, c'est plus dur pour le dos.
De toute façon, cette plage n'est pas très fréquentée. Les gens préfèrent s'installer à la piscine.
Certains sports nautiques non motorisés sont offerts tels que du kayak, de la voile et du pédalo.
ANIMATION
Différentes activités sont offertes tout au long de la journée telles que des jeux, des cours d'aérobie, des cours de danse etc. Un groupe de musiciens est présent en soirée.
AUTRES SERVICES
L'établissement comprend une réception ouverte 24h/24, un bureau de change, un salon de beauté qui sert également de salon de massage, un club pour enfants ainsi que des salles de réunion.
Il y a également une boutique où l'on peut se procurer rhum, café, tabac et articles de souvenir.
La plongée sous-marine y est offerte moyennant des frais.
Le wifi est également disponible ($).

Marea Del Portillo -Farallon Section Manzanillo Cuba Jan 2016
his was the first time for us at the Marea Del Portillo (Farallon Section) Manzanillo Cuba. Actually closer to Pilon (12km) but Manzanillo is where the airport is. While the beach is a dark sand beach, it’s firm to walk on, and soft when you walk out in the water. and very little in the water, nice for swimming and certainly no need for water shoes. Not a good snorkelling beach thought, for that you need to go to Cayo Blanco (My other vid) The weather was nice and comfortable. This is not a big resort so everything is relatively close. My full review is on TripAdvisor is your interested. Our visit was from from Jan13th to 27th, 2016.
The music you hear in the video is performed by Jose Miguel Rodriguez one of the talented local musicians who plays regularly at the Resort. His CD is well worth it. Nice guy too. For us this resort itself is definitely a place to go back to. The pics and video were taken with the Canon Powershot SX240HS.

Cuba Travel: Beaches, Booze and Buffets!
A few observations on my last vacation to Cuba: electrical power outages, low food quality, delays, and general inconveniences are the norm in Cuba. BUT the beaches, weather, booze and people are fantastic.
And for the foodies, I provide a video tour thru the barfy buffet line (video does NOT do it justice: buns are rock hard, flies are all over the food, many items are over cooked or under cooked; food safety is of a lower standard than Canada/USA.

Driving to Cienfuegos, Cuba from Old Havana

We left Old Havana and drove 6 hours to Cienfuegos, Cuba. Even though it's the next big town, Cienfuegos had a very small town feel. It is not only much smaller but it's very close knit, feels like every one knows each other. The architecture was similar to the colonial architecture in Havana, pastel colors and all, just much smaller.
The Drive there was a 6 hour road trip and it was our first time riding a Classic American car. This one was a 1954 Chevy, the Green Machine pictured in the thumbnail (We took this picture). In Cuba they actually call cars Machines which I hand't encounter before from other Spanish speakers. We time Lapse the country drive until we got to the town we recorded 4K video of Cienfuegos.
The town is by the water, and beaches are close to it. It is beautiful, we have so many pictures. Subscribe for more!
