5. Visit Museum Speelklok
One of the more unusual of Utrecht's most popular tourist attractions is Museum Speelklok - or Musical Clock Museum in English - dedicated to music boxes, barrel organs, and other devices and instruments capable of playing music without human involvement (other than switching them on or cranking their handles). The museum was established in 1956, and its displays - many of them hands-on and interactive - include mechanical musical instruments from the 18th century to the present day, as well as domestic instruments, from tiny music boxes to massive fair organs, most of which can still be played.
4. Enjoy a Train Ride at the Railway Museum
Located in the old Maliebaan train station, Utrecht's Railway Museum (Spoorwegmuseum) is the country's national railway museum and is a must-see for train buffs. Founded in 1927, highlights of this large, well-stocked tourist attraction include a cross-section of the country's transit history, particularly its railroads and tram systems, with plenty of models and old vehicles to enjoy along the way.
Exhibits deal with the early years of railways, including its heyday of the 1900s, and an operational workshop.
3. The Kaiser's House
The picturesque little town of Doorn is the last home of Germany's Kaiser Wilhelm II, Huis Doorn (known in English as Doorn Manor). Forced into exile after defeat in WWI, the Kaiser purchased Huis Doorn in 1920 and lived there until he died in 1941 at age 82 (he's buried in a mausoleum on the grounds). Originally a medieval castle, the house was rebuilt in the Classical style in the 18th century, with only minor alterations since.
Set in a large and beautiful park, the house opened to the public as a museum in 1956 and has been preserved exactly as it was in the Kaiser's day, right down to the original furniture and furnishings, the Kaiser's possessions (including a collection of snuff-boxes belonging to Frederick the Great), uniforms, photos, and paintings.
2. Rietveld Schröder House
Considered so important a piece of architecture that UNESCO has deemed it a World Heritage Site, the stunning Rietveld Schröder House (Rietveld Schröderhuis) is a must-see for design buffs. Designed and constructed in the early 1920s by leading Dutch architect (and Utrecht resident) Gerrit Rietveld for a widower friend and her family, this attractive small home was decades ahead of its time in so many ways.
For example, the lower living area was created with retracting walls, a clever trick created by Rietveld - a leading member of the influential De Stijl design movement - that enabled family members to shut themselves off at night for privacy, yet served as a large communal space by day.
1. Utrecht University Botanic Gardens
A fun diversion for those with green thumbs - or those who simply enjoy lovely green spaces and gardens - involves paying a visit to the Utrecht University Botanic Gardens. Centered around the old abandoned Fort Hoofddijk, this delightful 22-acre site, while a relatively new creation (it was laid out in the late 20th century), can trace its roots back to the early days of the university in the 17th century.
All told there are six unique gardens to explore. Favorites include the Birders Den (no surprise, it's popular with bird-watchers), and the Bee Hotel with its diverse array of pollinating insects. The tropical greenhouses are also worth exploring.

IJsselstein to Vianen, small medieval towns | The Netherlands #5
In this episode, we visit two small towns in the Dutch province of Utrecht. Both towns developed in the fourteenth century and were during most of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries in a continuous struggle with the nearby city of Utrecht, the largest urban centre in the northern Low Countries. Their strategic position on trade routes via the Rhine made them quite a nuisance for Utrecht. The medieval centres of IJsselstein and Vianen mostly maintained their original layout.
Nieuwegein │City Center and Houseboat Living
Nieuwegein is just a relatively small town in the province of Utrecht in the Netherlands. After my first video about Nieuwegein I tried to catch some new impressions on a bright sunny day in September. So, you will notice this nice place doesn't have just grey and dull dorners but also lively and colorful squares and areas. Each spot is even better with some sun.
And, in addition to that – I had once again the chance to spend my vacation days on a great houseboat. You will surely find it on Air B'n'B. Of course, a houseboat is not a luxurious hotel, but you are somehow connected with the nature around you as you are directly on the water. Don't care, in winter you can heat up the houseboat with a fire in there. In summer, in turn you sit on deck smoke some cigars, drink some wine and just enjoy life and the fresh air of the night. Supermarkets are nearby, by the way.
In case you travel to the Netherlands by car, then visit the places all around. Amsterdam is not that far away, so as the country itself is not that huge, the distances between the cities are absolutely not problem. Go there in summer and have a great time!

Nieuwegein │The Hood of Nieuwegein - a little city in the province of Utrecht, NL
The little city Nieuwegein in the Netherlands is a located in the province of Utrecht. If you've once been to London or Great Britain before, maybe you have the same association than me.
Throughout the city, everywhere such tiny red brick-lined terrace houses - in my opinion that looks like the hood in a London outskirt. Perhaps, it also because the Dutch are quite close to Britain and the red brick-lined building style of the northernmost houses in Germany.
However, for having party and a blast - Nieuwegein is rather not the right place - in case that statement is wrong, then I've not seen the right places there. So, show me some!
In the center of the small city, there are of course several different restaurants and some kind of beer pubs, but for dancing and partying you better should go to downtown Utrecht itself. That's where the life goes on! But, okay, for having calm evenings and BBQ sessions in a private housing area, Nieuwegein is pretty fine!

Een impressie van wat er aan natuur in Nieuwegein door het jaar heen te zien is. Nieuwegein is in tegenstelling tot wat veel mensen denken, die het niet kennen, geen betonwoestenij, maar een stad met veel gezichten en ook veel natuur in en om de bebouwde omgeving. Ik daag iedereen uit om de soortenrijkdom van vogels te tellen, die alleen al in deze film is te zien. Die zijn in beeld gekomen, niet door dagenlang in hutjes te bivakkeren, maar uitsluitend door wandelingen met de camera in de aanslag.
An impression of what nature can be seen in Nieuwegein throughout the year. Contrary to what many people think, who do not know it, Nieuwegein is not a concrete wasteland, but a city with many faces and also a lot of nature in and around the built environment. I challenge anyone to count the species richness of birds, which can be seen in this movie alone. They came into the picture, not by spending days in shacks, but only by walks with the camera at the ready.

The Dutch Windmill Oudegein
This wonder of enginering allowed the dutch in this area to live below sea level for hunderds of years. This particulair mill was build around 1640 and has been in operation till 1982.
After a change of location and a complete restoration, the mill came back in function in 2006.

The white farmbuilding in the beginning the video is nowadays a museum about the history of the dutch villages Jutphaas and Vreeswijk (Nieuwegein)

De Oudegeinse Molen is een wipmolen in Nieuwegein in de Nederlandse provincie Utrecht.
De molen is oorspronkelijk in 1640 in het voormalige Jutphaas gebouwd en heeft daar tot 1982 de polder Oudegein bemalen, de laatste jaren op vrijwillige basis. De onderhoudstoestand van de molen werd zo slecht, evenals de molenbiotoop dat in dat jaar de molen is stilgezet. In 1988 werden de roeden verwijderd en in 1993 het bovenhuis. Tien jaar later is de ondertoren van de molen naar het Park Oudegein verplaatst en daar is de molen geheel gerestaureerd en in 2006 weer op vrijwillige basis in gebruik genomen. Het scheprad is nog niet compleet, maar na completering hiervan kan de molen een circuit in het park bemalen. De molen is thans eigendom van de Stichting De Utrechtse Molens die op haar beurt een onderdeel is van Het Utrechts Landschap. Het wiekenkruis is voorzien van oudhollands hekwerk met zeilen.

Utrecht is the capital and most populous city in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is located in the eastern corner of the Randstad conurbation and is the fourth largest city in the Netherlands.
