Benin
Country in West Africa
Benin, a French-speaking West African nation, is a birthplace of the vodun (or “voodoo”) religion and home to the former Dahomey Kingdom from circa 1600–1900. In Abomey, Dahomey's former capital, the Historical Museum occupies two royal palaces with bas-reliefs recounting the kingdom’s past and a throne mounted on human skulls. To the north, Pendjari National Park offers safaris with elephants, hippos and lions. ― Google

Top 10 Tourist Destinations in Benin

1. Cotonou
It may not be the true capital city of Benin but Cotonou sure does feel like it. The city is an intense blast of urban energy combined with African charm. If it is your first time in Africa, the city can be a little bit daunting and full on but for those willing to risk the adventure, Cotonou has plenty of rewards These rewards include a number of stunning paradise beaches with golden sand and palm trees. The Pendjari National Park is also a must see in Cotonou and is seen as one of the leading animal reserves in Africa. For those looking for a more obscure attraction, the “Fetish Market” sells a large variety of dead animals for voodoo festival celebrations.

2. Ouidah
Ouidah is a city that has a mix of influence from the French and the Portuguese due to various events in history. The city is located about 40km away from Cotonou and in contrast is more relaxed. If you are interested in African history (and you should be) then this city should be top of your itinerary. It has fantastic museums exploring slavery and voodoo. If all the history gets too much for you, there are more stunning beaches to laze on in Ouidah too.

3. Porto Novo
Porto Novo is the capital city of Benin and former French capital of Dahomey. If you have visited Cotonou first, you will probably struggle to understand why Porto Novo is the official capital city, the population is only around 250,000 and the pace is much more leisurely than Cotono. The influence of the Portugeuse in this area are still clear to see in the present day. Sights in the city include the Royal Palace and gardens as well as the museum of Porto Novo kings.

4. Abomey
Abomey was the capital of Ancient Dahomey for around 300 years starting in the 17th Century. The main attraction and reason for visiting the city is the Unesco World Heritage Site of the Abomey Royal Palaces. Although the palaces have largely been destroyed and are in a ruinous state, the site still has enormous historical value and the tales of kings that once resided here are fascinating.

5. Grand-Popo
The town of Grand-Popo has an intriguing history mainly due to the important role it played in the slave trade. The town oozes with African charm and the people are friendly. The town is about an hours drive from Cotonou and offers a perfect change of pace from the busy city. There are many backside hotels and resorts in the town and the beaches are a great place to relax and swim. The nearby Mono River is a great place to walk and offers a chance to see mangroves and exotic bird life.

6. Natitingou
Located a convenient 50km away from the Pendjari National Park, the city of Natitingou also has some of its own attractions that make it a worth stop off on a tour of Benin. The city has its own museum which is based in a French colonel building and documents the lifestyle of the Somba people. In fact the city of Natitingou is one of the best places to see the Somba people’s way of life and methods of building. Natitingou is also a great place to see Shea butter being made.

7. Bohicon
Bohicon is more of a place to pass through than to actually spend an extended period of time visiting. The town is an almost entirely modern place but it is well worth visiting the market, which is arguably the biggest and the best in Benin. The difference between the bustling market and the relative calm of nearby Abomey is startling. The busiest times for the market are in the mornings, so these should be avoided if possible (unless of course you thrive on the chaos).

8. Tanguieta
This charming town is a great place to see colonial French buildings in Benin. The population of the town is small: only about 20,000 people call Tanguieta their home. Tanguieta also has a lively market, although it is nowhere near as lively as Bohicon’s, and is a great place from which to visit the Tonogou Waterfalls or the Pendjari National Park which is home to some of the most majestic beats in Africa including lions, hyenas and elephants to name only a few.

9. Parakou
The second largest city in Benin, Parakou has an estimated population of 200,000 people. Despite its size, the city does not feel as lively and crowded as Porto Novo or Cotonou due to more open spaces and wider streets. The city is industrious with most of its economy focusing on cotton, textiles and peanut oil. There are a number of worthwhile things to see in Parakou including the open-air museum which shows traditional Bariba architecture and the market specialising in a traditional kind of beer.

10. Lake Nokoue
This lake and small village is a great place for birdwatching. The species that call this 16,000 hectare lake there home include the African Openbill and the white crested heron. The lake is under threat from several environmental and biological issues such as logging, pollution and hunting of the wildlife. Conservation efforts are being made but the threat level is classified as high, so view this amazing area while you still can.

Benin is a great country to visit on any West African itinerary. Benin is the birthplace of Vodun (Voodoo) and all that goes with it—to this day Vodun remains the official religion of the country, and an important part of the life of ordinary Beninese. The national parks of Benin are also well worth a visit for their wildlife. Benin is also, fortunately, one of the most stable and safe countries of the region for traveling.

Cities
1 Porto-Novo — The capital, if only in name, hosting the parliament and a unique Afro-Portuguese heritage
2 Abomey — The pre-colonial capital whose Royal Palaces are on the UNESCO World Heritage List
3 Cotonou — Benin's largest city and de facto capital, the hectic and cramped home to many government offices and the country's port
4 Grand-Popo — A sleepy beach resort town close to the Togolese border
5 Malanville — A border town with Niger, with not much else besides a border post
6 Natitingou — Largest city on the way to northern Togo or Burkina Faso and a jumping-off point for exploring the Tata Somba
7 Ouidah - A former slave-trading port that is a center for the country's vodun heritage
8 Parakou — The largest city in the central region

Climate
The equatorial south of Benin experiences two rainy seasons of the year, from April to mid July and from mid-September through the end of October. The rainy period in the subequatorial north runs from March until October. The best time of the year to visit the country is from November to February, when the temperature moderates, and the weather is dry with low humidity.

People
The nation consists of more than 60 ethnic groups. The major tribes include the Fon (40%), Aja (15%), and Yoruba (12%) in the south of the country, and the Bariba (9%), Somba (8%), and Fulbe (6%) in the north.

The most widespread religion is Christianity (43%), predominantly in the south, and Islam in the north (24%). Most interesting for many visitors, however, is the strong influence of Vodun on Benin, practiced as a principal religion by a good 18% of the populace, and which was spread about the globe largely by the massive quantity of slaves exported by the Dahomey Kingdom.

Talk
The official language is French — the language of the former colonial power. Native African languages such as Fon and Yoruba are spoken in the south, Bariba and Dendi in the north, and over 50 other African languages and dialects are spoken in the country. English is on the rise.

Pendjari National Park in Tanguieta, Benin

The Pendjari National Park lies in north western Benin, adjoining the Arli National Park in Burkina Faso. Named for the Pendjari River, the national park is known for its wildlife and is home to some of the last populations of big game like the African forest elephant, West African lion, hippopotamus, buffalo, and various antelopes in West Africa. The park is also famous for its richness in birds.

The Pendjari National Park is an area of 2,755 square kilometres in the far north-west of Benin. The park is part of the WAP complex which is a vast protected area in Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger. The hills and cliffs of the Atakora range make the north-west one of the most scenic areas of Benin. They provide a wonderful backdrop to the Pendjari National Park, which, in its isolation, remains one of the most interesting in West Africa.

5 Reasons to Visit Pendjari

• Stunning landscapes and plentiful wildlife make Pendjari a dream for photographers and nature lovers alike.

• Pendjari is the last remaining safari destination in West Africa that offers the chance to see both lion and elephant in the wild.

• Over 360 bird species have been recorded in Pendjari, including rarities such as the Egyptian plover and black crowned crane.

• Unspoilt by mass tourism, Pendjari offers a crowd free safari experience.

• A Pendjari safari can be easily combined with a swim at the beautiful Tanongou waterfalls and cultural visits to traditional Tata Somba homesteads and Peulh camps.

The reserve covers a diversity of plant formations such as grass, shrubs, woodland and forested savannahs, as well as open forests and gallery forests. It is renowned for its rich fauna and a great variety of bird species.

In March 2009 it was nominated as a tentative site for UNESCO's World Heritage Site program, and in July 2017 it was officially inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of a transnational extension of the W-Arly-Pendjari Complex.

Quick Guide to Benin: Visa-free travel for South Africans

Benin is a West African country that is deep-rooted in intriguing culture and breathtaking, natural beauty. There is a wide variety of activities and attractions to keep everyone entertained.

You can discover the magic and mystery of the state religion known as voodoo by attending one of Benin's vibrant annual ceremonies in honour of it.

Or visit the markets in Cotonou, which will have you enthralled with their compelling yet macabre fetish section. Take to the waters and sail out to Ganvié, a floating stilted haven that sits buoyant on Lake Nakoué.

For those looking to kick back, why not lounge on the stunning, deserted, palm-fringed beaches at Grand Popo on the Bight of Benin. Here you can soak up some sun, sand, sea and palm leaf shade.

Or get wild and spot some elephants, cheetah, buffalo and lion at one of West Africa's prime game reserves.

Here's a look at the Benin and what you need to know should you want to visit:

After that we are heading south to Natiningou, and then to Abomey, the old capital of the Dahomey kingdom, with its history. Then to Porto Novo, the modern capital, before entering Cotonou, the finical capital on the Atlantic coast.
