Nancy, a riverfront city in the northeastern French region of Grand Est, is known for its late baroque and art nouveau landmarks, some dating to its days as the former capital of the Duchy of Lorraine. Its focal point is the 18th-century Place Stanislas. This grand square, decorated with gilded wrought-iron gates and rococo fountains, rests by the ornate palaces and churches filling the city’s medieval old town.
Nancy is the prefecture of the northeastern French department of Meurthe-et-Moselle. It was the capital of the Duchy of Lorraine which was annexed by France under King Louis XV in 1766 and replaced by a province with Nancy maintained as capital. Following its rise to prominence in the Age of Enlightenment, it was nicknamed the capital of Eastern France in the late 19th century.

Plazas of Nancy - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The UNESCO World Heritage site city of Plazas of Nancy in eastern France is home to three beautiful 18th century town squares: Place Stanislas, Place de la Carriere, and Place d'Alliance. These were all developed in the 18th century by the new Duke of Lorraine: Stanislas Leszczyński, the exiled former King of Poland and father-in-law to King Louis XV of France. It's a fascinating little bit of history, and the plazas and their associated gates are all very beautiful. Let's have a closer look!

Nancy is the prefecture of the northeastern French department of Meurthe-et-Moselle. It was the capital of the Duchy of Lorraine. The metropolitan area of Nancy had a population of 511,257 inhabitants at the 2018 census, making it the 16th-largest urban area in France and Lorraine's largest.The population of the city of Nancy proper is 104,885. Place Stanislas, a large square built between 1751 and 1755 by architect Emmanuel Héré under the direction of Stanislaus I of Poland to link the medieval old town of Nancy and the new city built under Charles III, Duke of Lorraine in the 17th century, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the first square in France to be given this distinction.

2 Hours in Nancy, France | Interrail Travel
We had many fun layovers in cities and towns throughout our interrail trip last summer, some I had never heard of before. Nancy, France was one of those places and it was a place that ended up being the most beautiful layover on our travels. Nancy has a unique history which makes it a fun place to walk around and see historic sights. Nancy is said to have the most beautiful public squares in the world and we can attest to that. The baroque, art nouveau and rococo architecture and fountains are also a sight to see. Check out the video for more about good ol' Nancy!
