Today's episode is all about the road trip food experience between Nagrota Bagwan and Palampur in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. It covers some of the popular and some impromptu eateries located between this stretch. Joining us on this tour is our gracious host Anika Sharma who hails from Palampur.
The first three eateries that we explored were located at the busy junction of Nagrota Bhagwan. All of these were located near the old bus stand and hence are frequented mostly by travelers and shoppers.
The first destination was Vinod Chaat Bhandar that has been serving yummy and pocket friendly samosa tikki, channa bhatura and dahi bhalle to the masses since 1983. The sight of the puffy bhature made us order the same. It came along with spicy chickpea curry and condiments. The taste was decent and homely.
The second destination was the Sanjay Dham Shop that was located near Vinod Chaat Bhandar. It was the big vessels placed on the front counter that attracted our attention to this 35 year old place that serves Kangri dham. The smell of the rice and curries made us excited. The platter included rice, rajma with sepu badi, chana dal, dahi kadhi and kadhi khatta. This soulful meal carried the rustic flavours from this part of the state.
The third stop was Mehra Chaat Bhandar adjacent to the Dham shop. They had sweets, fried snacks and chaat, keeping the traveling mass in mind. On Anika's recommendation we tried their seviyan boondi. This is one of the favourite tea time accompaniments of people over there. The boondi were slightly bigger in size compared to its North Indian counterparts. Same for the seviyan as well.
The fourth stop of this road trip was Kake Da Dhaba Green Soda Point. It's a famous dhaba on this stretch where you get veg dham and mutton-rice. But they are renowned for their green soda which is a fresh mint, spices and soda water based green coloured refreshing sweet drink. Travelers and locals love it because of its perfectly zesty taste and energizing feel and so did we.
The fifth stop was KPU Food shop which is a retail point for locally prepared pickles, jams, preserves and squashes. These are made of fruits and veggies native to this region. The owner took us through some of their hot selling fares and they looked quite tempting.
The sixth destination was Lakhan watermelon stall where we made a random pit stop because the melons looked really tempting. After polishing of a ripe and sweet watermelon we set out for Arla. But we once again stopped at a salt stall run by Rajesh ji to have a chit chat about his intriguing stuff which included huge chunks of different kinds of salt and spice mixes.
The sixth stop was Raju Chaat Bhandar in Arla. This nondescript golgappa stall has been around for nearly 23 years. It is a favourite with both the locals and travelers. Anika mentioned that it was an indispensable stop for her family whenever they cross this stretch. The golgappa weren't extraordinary but fun to try.
The last stop of this road trip was Verma Dhaba in Maranda. We have heard a lot about their mutton curry and hence ordered some with plain rice. The rich and dark coloured mutton curry quite tender and spicy and we quite liked it. It was a perfect end to this road trip food experience.

होशियारपुर हिमाचल प्रदेश की सीमा पर स्थित है जो पूरी तरह से पहाड़ी इलाकों और खूबसूरत पहाड़ों पर बसा है। हिमाचल प्रदेश के साथ सीमाओं को साझा करने के कारण कुछ सुंदरता होशियारपुर को स्वाभाविक रूप से उपहार में दी गई है। होशियारपुर में कई ऐतिहासिक और पारंपरिक आकर्षण हैं। यह भी पुष्टि की जाती है कि यह क्षेत्र सिंधु घाटी सभ्यता का हिस्सा था। किंवदंतियों ने कहा कि महाकाव्य महाभारत के मुख्य पात्रों ने भी अपने निर्वासन के समय इस स्थान का दौरा किया था। तखनी रहमापुर और अटबारापुर में नवीनतम खुदाई से पता चलता है कि यह स्थान पाषाण युग के दौरान भी मौजूद था। इतिहास के अनुसार इस शहर की स्थापना चौथी शताब्दी में हुई थी और वर्ष 1809 में महाराजा करणवीर सिंह ने इस पर कब्जा कर लिया था।
यह कई संतों और गुरुओं का घर है, होशियारपुर को 'संतों की भूमि' के रूप में जाना जाता है। पहाड़ियों और जंगल से घिरे इस क्षेत्र की जलवायु राज्य के बाकी हिस्सों की तुलना में हल्की है। यह कई मंदिरों और गुरुद्वारों का घर है । होशियारपुर घूमने के कई कारण हैं, लेकिन लोग शहर में धार्मिक और ऐतिहासिक आकर्षणों के लिए प्रमुखता से आते हैं।

The district is located between 32° 17′ to 32° 55′ North Latitude and 75° 70′ to 76° 16′ East longitude. It is bordered by Punjab to the South-East, Himachal Pradesh to the North-East, Doda and Udhampur to the North and North-West, Jammu to the West, and Pakistan to the South-West. The district covers an area of 2502 square kilometers according to the Census of 2011, with a population of 6.16 Lacs. It consists of 5 Assembly Constituencies and 11 Tehsils, namely Kathua, Bani, Basohli, Billawar, Hiranagar, Nagri, Marheen, Dinga Amb, Lohai-Malhar, Mahanpur, and Ramkote.
Furthermore, the district is divided into 19 blocks, including Bani, Basohli, Baggan, Kathua, Billawar, Hiranagar, Nagri, Barnoti, Marheen, Dinga Amb, Duggain, Duggan, Lohai-Malhar Mahanpur, Mandli, Nagrota Gujroo, Bhoond, Dhar Mahanpur, Keerian Kandyal, and encompasses approximately 512 villages.
The traditional language spoken in Kathua is Dogri, while the Pahari languages are commonly used in the mountainous regions to the east. The primary mediums of education in the district are English, Hindi, and Urdu.

पौंग बांध (महाराणा प्रताप)
हिमाचल प्रदेश के कांगड़ा जिले के शिवालिक पहाड़ियों के आर्द्र भूमि पर ब्यास नदी पर बाँध बनाकर एक जलाशय का निर्माण किया गया है जिसे महाराणा प्रताप सागर नाम दिया गया है। इसे पौंग जलाशय या पौंग बांध के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। यह बाँध 1975 में बनाया गया था। महाराणा प्रताप के सम्मान में नामित यह जलाशय या झील एक प्रसिद्ध वन्यजीव अभयारण्य है और रामसर सम्मेलन द्वारा भारत में घोषित 25 अंतरराष्ट्रीय आर्द्रभूमि साइटों में से एक है।जलाशय 24,529 हेक्टेयर (60,610 एकड़) के एक क्षेत्र तक फैला हुआ है, और झीलों का भाग 15,662 हेक्टेयर (38,700 एकड़) है।
पौंग जलाशय हिमाचल प्रदेश में हिमालय की तलहटी में सबसे महत्वपूर्ण मछली वाला जलाशय है। इस जलाशय में महासीर मछली अत्याधिकता मे पाई जाती है | नगरोटा सूरियां से ठीक सामने पौंग झील के बीच एक खूबसूरत टापू रैंसर है। यह आठ माह से अधिक समय तक चारों तरफ से पानी से घिरा रहता है। यहां खूबसूरत जंगल व एक रेस्ट हाउस है। यहां नाव से पहुंचने का अपना अलग ही मजा है। इसके लिए आपको नगरोटा सूरियां व धमेटा से वन्य प्राणी विंग हिमाचल प्रदेश की नाव कुछ रेंट पर उपलब्ध हो जाएगी।
Pong Dam (Maharana Pratap)
A reservoir has been constructed on the river Beas in the wet land of Shivalik hills of Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, which has been named as Maharana Pratap Sagar. It is also known as Pong reservoir or Pong Dam.This dam was built in 1975 named in honor of Maharana Pratap, this reservoir or lake is a famous wildlife sanctuary and one of the 25 international wetland sites declared by Ramsar Sammel in India.The reservoir stretches to an area of 24,529 hectares (60,610 acres), and part of the lakes is 15,662 hectares (38,700 acres).Pong reservoir is the most important fish reservoir in the foothills of the Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh. In this reservoir, majestic fish is found in excess Nagrota Surian is a town in Nagrota Surian Mandal, Kangra District, in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Nagrota Surian is 45.2 km from the district headquarters Dharamshala. It is about 260 km from the state capital Shimla. Block Head office is also available in Nagrota surian. This town is located near the Pong Lake. The Pong Dam Reservoir is very much approachable from Nagrota Surian, which is the main attraction due to migratory birds during various seasons. This reservoir comes under the Ramsar Wetland sites and rancer a small island between pong dam, approachable by boat. It is the home of some local wild animals and has a pathway circling full island and offers great view of the dam.

By TrainThe nearest broad gauge railway station is Pathankot Cantt.(Chakki) at a distance of 70km from Pongdam and nearest narrow gauge railway station is Nandpur Bhatauli railway Station, Baryal Himachal Railway Station. Further, you can hire a taxi, or direct buses.
By RoadThe Pong dam is 466km from New Delhi, 170 kilometers from Chandigarh, 110 kilometers from Amritsar, 55 kilometers from Dharamshala.You can take HRTC volvo buses from Delhi ISBT to kangra and from Kangra you can take local buses to Pong dam or you can also hire taxi from taxi stand Kangra.
