Experience this unique country between East and West, between Russia and Europe, hardly known by anyone in Western countries, although Georgians proudly call themselves (first!) Europeans.

The Republic of Georgia is a country at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, bordering Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Turkey. It is a country full of surprises, where we encounter many traditions we have never seen before (such as Georgian bakers diving headfirst into the hot clay oven and Georgian dance), taste flavors that are unfamiliar to us (such as Churchkhela, Khinkali, and Khachapuri), and learn that Georgia is the cradle of wine and has one of the oldest living languages in the world!

We listen to what young and elderly people have to say, we delve into local markets, where the true essence of Georgian life unfolds before our eyes, we discover towns that transport us back to the days of the Soviet Union, like the mining town of Chiatura, we witness that Stalin is still worshipped (in Gori), we venture into remote and genuine villages like Oni and Ninotsminda, we uncover UNESCO gems (Kutaisi, Ananuri), we marvel at the beauty of the landscapes (Caucasian Mountains, canyons, alpine lakes, Black Sea), we drink healing waters (in Borjomi), we are intrigued by the UNESCO-listed cave city of Vardzia and admire the modernity of Batumi. And last but certainly not least, we immerse ourselves in the exceptional atmosphere of Tbilisi, the captivating capital city.

We become involved with the remnants of the Soviet era and hear the outcry of Georgia's tension-filled relationship with Russia. Since Russia's war on Ukraine, thousands of Russians have fled to this neighboring former Soviet country, causing resentment among Georgians who see Russia as a threat. Throughout history, powerful empires like Russia, Persia, the Ottoman Empire, and the Byzantine Empire have all left their mark, shaping Georgia's destiny and its unique personality!

Explore Georgia, a one-of-a-kind Eurasian country, witness the profound spirit of the Georgian people, who, much like Ukraine, have bravely confronted military conflicts and territorial disputes with Russia, fiercly fighting for freedom and a European identity.

Much love xx

Overland Silk Road: 2 years 70000 Km solo road trip in our van from Europe to Japan and back

A road trip that proved much more challenging than we expected.
This short movie will give you a taste of what we have been through.

Our goal was to visit as many remote places as possible and spend time with locals as much as we could to learn about what they have been through in the past and the way they live nowadays. It’s been an incredibly enriching experience.

We ended up driving and living around the following nations:
Switzerland, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia And Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, Turkey, Kurdistan, Abkhazia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Artsakh Republic (Nagorno-Karabakh), Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Siberia, Korea, Japan, Jewish Autonomous Oblast, Buryatia Republic, Mongolia, Altai Republic, Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Kalmykia, Chechen Republic, Dagestan, Nakhchivan Republic, Romania, Ukraine, Transnistria, Moldova, Hungary, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Luxembourg, France.

Main challenges have been: Cancelled visas, some countries with date-specific visas forcing us to be at a border on a specific day and therefore having to kind of plan our whole trip backwards, rough off-road tracks in remote areas, harsh climate ranging from +47c in Iran to -27c in Siberia. Seasons were also an important factor, even though it is not possible to be in every spot at the best time of the year, seasons can definitively enlighten or ruin your trip!

The way we make sense of our world today is through BORDERS. It's also the way in which we are able to govern our societies.

In today's video, join me as I tell you about some of the world's most bizarre borders which will leave you scratching your head!!

- NORTH KOREA v. SOUTH KOREA
- KALININGRAD, RUSSIA v. EUROPEAN UNION
- AZERBAIJAN v. NAGORNO-KARABAKH
- THE DIOMEDE ISLANDS: RUSSIA v. USA
- ANTARCTICA

If you ask me, borders (in general) are a strange concept. Like hundreds of years ago, the notion of creating an imaginary line that separates human beings from one territory to another is weird -- and today, it seems as if borders are permanent. What are your thoughts on borders?

VISIT ARTSAKH | АРЦАХ

The land of Artsakh, the central and largest part of which is better known throughout the 20th century as Nagorno-Karabakh or Mountainous Karabakh, is one of three ancient provinces of Armenia, located in the eastern end of the Armenian Plateau.

Beyond the mystical beauty of the place, Karabakh is one of the cradles of Armenian statehood and contains a large number of the key landmarks of Armenian history. The region is an open sky treasure house of Christian art and architecture, hosting hundreds of medieval churches, monasteries and khachkars (cross-stones).

The magnificent scenery, soft climate, the pure curative air, the rich and varied forests, the healing mineral waters, the tumbling waterfalls, historic sights and the warm hospitality of local Karabakhi's provide visitors with unforgettable memories!

Armenia has a rich history and culture, dating back to ancient times, and is known for its stunning landscapes, including snow-capped mountains, verdant valleys, and pristine lakes.

The official language is Armenian and the majority of the population practices Christianity, specifically the Armenian Apostolic Church. EXTREME Street Food in Azerbaijan!! KING OF KEBABS + Local Food in Baku, Azerbaijan!

???????? Best Senegalese Food:

BAKU, AZERBAIJAN - Welcome to Baku, an exciting city on the Caspian Sea in Azerbaijan! Today I’m hanging out with my friends from reAzerbaijan, and we’re taking you on an ultimate and extreme street food tour - it’s going to be meaty! #ExperienceAzerbaijan #Baku

First of all, a huge thank you to reAzerbaijan for arranging my trip to Azerbaijan, it wouldn’t have been possible without them.

reAzerbaijan:
Adnan:

As Adnan and Farhad explained to me, unfortunately during the Soviet period, Azerbaijan wasn’t able to develop their street food culture that much and creativity was omitted. When Azerbaijan broke away from the Soviet Union, it was the Turkish who influenced much of the Azerbaijani street food culture. So you will definitely find some similarities, and yet some differences.

We started this extreme street food tour in Baku by going to one of the oldest Soviet style cafes for a quick piroshky on the go. It was pretty oily, but pretty tasty especially when drenched in tomato sauce.

Amin Kabab - Next stop on this food tour, we went to Amin Kabab, a small neighborhood kebab grill for a quick Lyulya kebab, or chopped meat kebab.

Eskulap Restoran - If you’re looking for one of the best local Azerbaijan kebab meat restaurants in Baku, this is the spot. Adnan explained it’s a legendary restaurant he’s been coming to since he was a kid. They specialize in all things lamb, and along with a variety of stews and braised dishes, one of their specialties is the Khan Kebab, lamb liver wrapped in caul fat and grilled. I also loved the lamb braised in sour plums and barberries and the insane dessert kebab of ground walnuts and lamb fat. What a meal!

To continue this extreme street food tour in Baku we headed to a lamb street where lambs hang on the street, you choose your cut from nose to tail. The organs and jaws are some of the most popular items here. We tried lamb jaws and testicles - both of which were pretty tasty.

Köz Halil Usta - Finally to complete this food tour, we had to eat at Köz Halil Usta for tantuni, a Turkish in origin food, but one of the most popular street foods in Azerbaijan. They fry up beef slices with spices and sunflower oil and wrap into your choice of bread or lavash. It’s something you could watch all day being made and it’s so incredibly addictive.

And that wraps up Azerbaijani food tour in Baku. It’s an incredible city and the lamb and meats are spectacular!

Thank you again to Adnan from reAzerbaijan for arranging my trip!

Soviet remainings in Nagorno Karabakh

Nagorno Karabakh (Russian: Нагорный Карабах, lit. 'mountainous Karabakh'; Armenian: Լեռնային Ղարաբաղ; Azerbaijani: Dağlıq Qarabağ) is a landlocked region in the South Caucasus, within the mountainous range of Karabakh, lying between Lower Karabakh and Zangezur, and covering the southeastern range of the Lesser Caucasus mountains.
Nagorno Karabakh is a disputed territory, internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but mostly governed by the unrecognised Republic of Artsakh (formerly named Nagorno Karabakh Republic (NKR)) since the first Nagorno Karabakh War. Since the end of the war in 1994, representatives of the governments of Armenia and Azerbaijan have been holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group on the region's disputed status.
On the morning of 27 September 2020, clashes in the unresolved Nagorno Karabakh conflict resumed along the Nagorno Karabakh Line of Contact. Both the armed forces of Azerbaijan and Armenia reported military and civilian casualties. The United Nations strongly condemned the conflict and called on both sides to deescalate tensions and resume meaningful negotiations without delay.
The region is usually equated with the administrative borders of the former Nagorno Karabakh Autonomous Oblast, comprising 4,400 square kilometres (1,700 sq mi). The historical area of the region, however, encompasses approximately 8,223 square kilometres (3,175 sq mi).
The prefix Nagorno- derives from the Russian attributive adjective nagorny (нагорный), which means highland. The Azerbaijani names of the region include the similar adjectives dağlıq (mountainous) or yuxarı (upper). Such words are not used in the Armenian name, but appeared in the region's official name during the Soviet era as Nagorno Karabakh Autonomous Oblast. Other languages apply their own wording for mountainous, upper, or highland; for example, the official name used by the Nagorno Karabakh Republic in French is Haut-Karabakh, meaning Upper Karabakh.
The names for the region in the various local languages all translate to mountainous Karabakh, or mountainous black garden:
Armenian: Լեռնային Ղարաբաղ, transliterated Leṙnayin Ġarabaġ. Azerbaijani: Dağlıq Qarabağ, Дағлыг Гарабағ (mountainous Karabakh) or Yuxarı Qarabağ, Јухары Гарабағ (upper Karabakh)
Russian: Нагорный Карабах, transliterated Nagornyy Karabakh or Nagornyi Karabah.
Armenians living in the area often call Nagorno Karabakh Artsakh (Armenian: Արցախ), the name of the 10th province of the ancient Kingdom of Armenia. Urartian inscriptions (9th–7th centuries BC) use the name Urtekhini for the region. Ancient Greek sources called the area Orkhistene.

Karabakh (including modern-day Nagorno Karabakh), became a protectorate of the Russian Empire by the Kurekchay Treaty, signed between Ibrahim Khalil Khan of Karabakh and general Pavel Tsitsianov on behalf of Tsar Alexander I in 1805, according to which the Russian monarch recognized Ibrahim Khalil Khan and his descendants as the sole hereditary rulers of the region. However, its new status was only confirmed following the outcome of the Russo-Persian War (1804-1813), when through the loss in the war, Persia formally ceded Karabakh to the Russian Empire per the Treaty of Gulistan (1813), before the rest of Transcaucasia was incorporated into the Empire in 1828 by the Treaty of Turkmenchay, which came as an outcome of the Russo-Persian War (1826-1828).
In 1822, 9 years after passing from Iranian to Russian control, the Karabakh Khanate was dissolved, and the area became part of the Elisabethpol Governorate within the Russian Empire. In 1823 the five districts corresponding roughly to modern-day Nagorno-Karabakh was 90.8% Armenian
The present-day conflict over Nagorno Karabakh has its roots in the decisions made by Joseph Stalin and the Caucasian Bureau (Kavburo) during the Sovietization of Transcaucasia. Stalin was the acting Commissar of Nationalities for the Soviet Union during the early 1920s, the branch of the government under which the Kavburo was created. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Karabakh became part of the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic, but this soon dissolved into separate Armenian, Azerbaijani, and Georgian states. Over the next two years (1918–1920), there were a series of short wars between Armenia and Azerbaijan over several regions, including Karabakh. In July 1918, the First Armenian Assembly of Nagorno-Karabakh declared the region self-governing and created a National Council and government. Later, Ottoman troops entered Karabakh, meeting armed resistance by Armenians.

Russia, Altai Mountains. Motorbike Around the World - Episode 14

Riding in Russia through the Altai mountains, traveling motorbike around the world.

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT:

EPISODE 14
We finally made it out of Kazakhstan and are now in Russia, the country whose visa is holding me hostage. Cross the Kazakh Russian border in the evening and soon enough enjoy great local hospitality. The next day the motorbike road trip continues through the green rolling hills of the Altai and in the afternoon the landscape transforms into mountains. Back on the main highway a petrol head is checking out Alp and he wiggles the front wheel. Front bearing is worn he says and helps out replacing them. To this day I call him the angel sent from above before entering the Mongolian offroad madness. Also had a tire puncture which took some time to fix. Around midday we arrive at the Russia Mongolia border crossing in Tashanta. Soon another awesome offroad chapter on this motorbike adventure.

Enjoy this short motorbike travel documentary in Russia put together with video footage recorded back in 2014.

My name is Pedro Mota and back in 2014 I left the Netherlands on a beautiful Honda Transalp dual sport motorcycle on a trip to the east end of Russia in Vladivostok. On the way there we would take a big detour through the Middle East, Central Asia and Mongolia. Little did I know back then that this would evolve into a years long motorbike travel further taking me through Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the American continent.
