Ometempe is an island paradise located in the center of lake Nicaragua. Made up of two volcanos there are plenty of outdoor activities to do! We recommend renting a motor bike for your visit as the island is not too walkable. We hope this video helps you have an amazing time in Nicaragua!

I wanted to explore a very remote village in the middle of nowhere in Nicaragua. My plan was to head to a small village that I saw on Google Maps called El Toro. The villages in the center of Nicaragua are far off the tourist trail so this was undiscovered territory.
What was life like? How much did they make? What interesting relics could I find?
I started out my journey in a city called Rio Blanco, which is right in the center of the country. Then took a chicken bus to the rural countryside where I brought my foot down into El Toro. I walked around a bit and met a family who showed me around....the hospitality of Nicaraguans.

The NICARAGUAN STREET FOOD QUEEN of Granada!! Vigoron and Fritanga Tour in Nicaragua!!

My epic food and travel adventure through the country of Nicaragua continued in the city of Granada! Come with me on my awesome street food adventure in Granada, Nicaragua!
Granada is a colonial city, and one of the oldest cities in Latin America. It dates back to 1524 and is about an hour’s drive from Managua.
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:
While we were here, we were going to try one of the area’s most popular dishes, vigoron. It’s made up of cassava, yucca, salad, and fried pork. I couldn’t wait to try it!
We started at Tower La Merced Church, which offers the best views of Granada. It costs 20 cordobas to go up to the top, which is less than $1 USD. From the top, you can see all of the colonial buildings, the volcano in the distance, and Lake Nicaragua!
The stairs to go up and down are very steep, so I suggest going slow. Back outside, we passed colonial buildings, shops, pulperias, barber shops, and street vendors on our way to the Central Park.
There, we didn’t meet the man we were supposed to—the Chubby Man—but we met his wife, who prepared the vigoron for us! She added cabbage salad, pork rinds, and pork belly and served it on a leaf.
The chicharron was amazing, and I loved the crunchy and refreshing cabbage salad. I could see why this is the local dish of Granada!
We also got a drink called coyolito, which is similar to grape or cherry juice. It was nice and refreshing.
But I had to go back to the vigoron. Adding some chilies gave it some heat and a nice vinegar flavor. The chicharron was nice and crunchy, but the pork belly was nice, fatty, and meaty.
I also loved the cassava. It was a nice mix of textures and a great meal for just 80 cordoba/roughly $2.24 USD. The coyolito was the perfect way to cool off in the heat!
Then, we met a woman in the park selling lots of traditional local sweets, including some coyolito candies covered in sugar. It was crumbly and soft, and packed with sugar!
She also had some candied papaya, which was chewy and extremely sweet.
Then, we continued through the park past a beautiful church, where we watched a performance dedicated to us for 200 cordoba/roughly $5.60 USD. It featured dancers with large puppets on their heads. They dance to the drummers!
The woman also danced throughout the square on everyone! They danced for 3 minutes. Then, we walked past lots of restaurants and bars, and stopped inside Nectar Bar & Restaurante.
They sell artisanal beers, wine, and food. Their Bluefields Maibock was a nice amber with 6.9% alcohol. It was hoppy, wheaty, and malty. I also tried a macuá, which is the national drink.
Then, we left and got some fritanga. They sell gallo pinto in a bag, as well as chicken, maduro, queso frito, and more. Our fritanga came with fried cheese, cabbage salad, plantain chips.
The cheese was nice and dense, and the crisp cabbage really set it off. I loved it. The plantain chips were also nice and crunchy!

My time in Granada, Nicaragua continued with a tour of its Central Market! Come with me as I try lots of Nicaraguan street food in the Granada Central Market!
My guide Carlos and I made our way down the tight, congested lanes of the market. There were cars, motorcycles, and buses, along with pedestrians!
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:
We stopped at a vendor selling lots of dairy, including a delicious manchego-like cheese. We also tried some cheese that had vegetables in it and a yogurt drink.
Next, we had some Granada-style frito, or fried pork or pork rinds. It was crunchy and very oily and fatty. It was also a little hard but tasty!
There was also some Granada fried pork. It was a lot better than the pork rinds and super juicy and meaty!
There was so much activity in the market, from horses to vendors selling pinatas and clothes. Inside the covered section were lots of clothing vendors.
We saw some massive, whole chicharrones and another woman selling chancho con yuca, a dish made with marinated pork, yucca, and cabbage with membro.
I loved the creamy, salty sauce on the pork, the pickles, and the crunchy cabbage. The boiled yuca was fantastic, and I loved the marinated pork. It wasn’t too spicy either!
It tasted almost like a wheatgrass and felt super healthy even though they’d added sugar to it. Then, we found a vendor selling pinol de iguana, which is a corn stew containing iguana meat, onions, and egg!
It was a delicious corn stew, similar to watery grits. I loved the caramelized onions and the fat from the iguana meat. The rib meat was really nice! I sat down with the vendor and had a conversation with her while I ate!
The iguana meat contained lots of bones, though. The ribs were really small. I drank the rest of the stew to finish it off.
The woman starts cooking at 2 a.m., sets up at 6 a.m., and by 8:30, she had sold out for the day! I got one of her last bowls! It only cost 70 cordobas/$1.95 USD.
Nearby were spice vendors selling cloves, cinnamon sticks, hibiscus, achiote, and more. We continued on past sponge vendors to one selling candied fruit called almibar. She had mango, papaya, and hocote. It’s a traditional food eaten during Easter!
It was extremely sweet and covered in something like a jelly or a marmalade. I loved how delicious the papaya and mango were. They were like pure sugar! The papaya was my favorite! It costs 30 cordoba/roughly $1 USD for a bag.
We continued on past produce, rice, and bean vendors and found an antique barber shop. I wanted to get a mustache trim so it wouldn’t get in my food anymore!
My guy also cleaned up the lining on my beard, which I was letting grow out! It cost 50 cordobas/$1.39 USD! Next, they cleaned up Carlos’ mustache!
Next was leche agria, a thick yogurt drink. They added a bit of salt, and you eat it with some thin tortilla, slightly crispy! It was a nice balance.
We saw vendors selling Nica rice and red beans and went back outside. The outdoor vendors sold home goods, clothes, hocotes, bananas, mangoes, melon, and more.
There were some making tortillas rellenos stuffed with rice and meat. They stuff it, batter it, and fry it!
The meat was fantastic by itself, but the stuffed tortilla with cabbage on top was almost like a tosta. I loved it! It was the perfect street food!
We finished up with some cheese with chilies in it!
