Thamarassery churam | Ghat Pass wayanad | Kerala tourism
The ghat pass (churam) begins from Adivaram (downhills), while coming from Kozhikkode and ends at Lakkidi, the beginning of Wayanad district.
There is a view point at the top of the ghat pass just after the 9th hairpin and before reaching Lakkidi. You can stop at this place and enjoy the beautiful view of the serpentine roads through the hills.
There are 9 hairpin curves, which are numbered from 1 to 9, starting from the first one at the downhills. The adventurous hairpin roads through the ghat pass will hold you spell bound. The amazing view of serpentine roads of the ghat pass from the view point located at the 9th hairpin, is really spectacular.
The entire ghat road is about 12 km and you would take about 30 to 45 minutes to cover this distance. Presence of fog may further slow down your journey. The best place to stop by is the view point at the top of the churam, near Lakkidi. Avoid stopping in any other places especially on the hairpin curves to avoid any accidents.

Its pretty image not withstanding, perhaps what the visitor finds most endearing about this quaint little hill station is its large tribal population of about fifty-strong tribes and their fascinating lifestyle. Travellers can stay at the tree top houses and mud huts and enjoy the thrills of jungle life.
Vythiri is a small village, town and tourist destination located in the Wayanad district in the Indian state of Kerala.[1] It is one of the three Taluks in the district with the other two being Mananthavady and Sulthan Bathery.
Vythiri, a beautiful locale in Wayanad, is famous for its spice plantations, beautiful forests and the diverse traditions of its tribal communities. It is among the best picnic spots in the entire State.
En Ooru is a tribal heritage village at Pookode in Wayanad district which showcases the vibrant culture and tradition of tribal communities of the state. A cluster of traditional tribal huts roofed with hay and against the backdrop of towering hills has become a major tourist attraction in the region. Spread over 25 acres on a hillock, the centre gives us a golden opportunity to learn about the heritage and lifestyle of tribespeople.
Managed by tribal communities and with the aim of enhancing their livelihood options, the village hosts cafeterias that serve ethnic dishes and a tribal market. Stalls selling souvenirs, spices and handicrafts of tribal artisans, a warehouse for collecting handicrafts, a felicitation centre and an open-air theatre with a seating capacity for 300 people have been set up in this beautiful campus.
Thanks to En Ooru, the tribespeople now have a permanent marketplace to sell their produce in, and tribal artistes have a platform to showcase their talent and earn a livelihood.
The centre stages tribal art forms, tribal food fest and art fest.
A joint venture of the Departments of Tourism and Scheduled Tribe Development, the village also takes the lead in preserving traditional knowledge on food processing and other related areas, and takes up training in organic farming. The centre has paved the way for creating direct and indirect job opportunities for many people.

#Vythiri is a small town and tourist destination located in the #Wayanad district in the Indian state of #Kerala. This village is after Thamarasseri churam (wayanad churam) while coming from Kozhikkode. It is one of the three Taluks in the district with the other two being Mananthavady and Sulthan Bathery. Vythiri is considered the gateway to Wayanad. The place is famous for its spice gardens. Vythiri is a bio-tourism destination nestled amidst dense rainforests in the Nilgiri hill ranges. Pookot Lake and Lakkidi are some of the popular tourist destinations around Vythiri. But there are also lesser-known, scenic spots here. I went to #Poonchola in search of such a place. In this video, you can see the beautiful views of Vaithiri and the highlights of the Poonchola.
Vaithiri is located at an average elevation of 700 m above sea level. It is colder than other places in Wayanad district. There are many resorts, both large and small, around Vythiri, which attract a large number of tourists to experience this comfortable climate.
Poonchola hold wild trees, beautiful waterfalls, a small dam, blood-sucking leeches, and a rough & tough road to the top. The place is very adjacent to Chembra Peak. Chembra Peak is the highest peak in the Wayanad Hills. This peak is located at an altitude of 2100 m above sea level. Chembra Peak is also an important trekking spot in Kerala. From the top of this peak, one can get a 360 degree view of the Wayanad district. The adjoining parts of Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Nilgiris districts can also be seen from the top. This trekking can be done only with the permission of the Meppadi Forest Office. This trek is through trails with lots of wildlife. For safety reasons, trekking is currently only allowed at certain times of the year.

Kappad beach is a historic place located near Kozhikode. It was at Kappad, in 1498, Vasco-da-Gama landed with his 170 men. His epic landing set in motion waves of change that would rewrite the socio-cultural and political landscape of Kerala forever. Kappad was to be the gateway of European merchants who flocked in for spice trade, which eventually ended up in Colonial rule. Undoubtedly Kappad is a much sought after spot for the historically initiated. Kappad is also remarkable for its wide and open beaches. The long stretch of rocks and hillocks, and occasional migratory birds, offer a pleasing experience to beach lovers.
Kerala’s Kappad beach among 8 beaches in India to get coveted ‘ Blue Flag ’ certification by an eminent international jury that comprises members of the UNEP, UNWTO, FEE and IUCN.
One of the stunning beaches in Kerala, Kappad Beach is located around 16km from Kozhikode and is revered as one of the most important historical sites in God’s Own Country! How to Reach Kappad Beach:
By Road:
This beach town shares a decent connectivity with the rest of Kerala. Visitors can avail regular buses operated by KSRTC from Kozhikode and also private buses in order to reach Kappad Beach by road. Private transport buses are available from the main bus stand, or visitors can reach the beach by stopping at Thiruvangoor on National Highway 66 between Kozhikode and Vadakara.
By Train:
Kozhikode serves as the nearest major point to reach Kappad Beach by train which is 18 kms from beach. After arrival at the Kozhikode Railway Station, visitors can hire private taxis or local auto rickshaws to make it to the beach. Another major railway station is Koyilandy, about 10 km away from Kappad. Visitors can also reach chemancheri railway station which is only 3 Kms away from the beach
By Air:
Kozhikode Airport at a distance of 45km serves as the nearest airport to reach Kappad Beach by air. Kannur airport at a distance of 80 Km from beach and Cochin airport at a distance of 190 Kms. The airports are well-connected with other popular Indian destinations via regular flights.
Best Time to Visit Kappad Beach:
Summer and winter are the best time to visit Kappad Beach in Kozhikode. During these two seasons, visitors can enjoy an array of leisure activities around the beach. Though temperature during the summers might get harsh, the pleasant sea breezes will make it for a relaxed and calm ambience.

Pookode Lake: Boating experience in Wayanad
Heavenly hills and picturesque valleys are not the only attractions in Wayanad that makes it a paradise for the tourists. Boating can be enjoyed to its best in a naturally beautiful lake in Wayanad.
Watch this amazing video of Pookode Lake and the experience of boating in the Lake. The lake is a picturesque spot that lay in the heart of a lush forest and sloppy mountains. Pookode Lake assumed to be in the shape of Indian Map. Back 25 years, Pookode Lake has been promoted as a tourist place by D.T.P.C Wayanad which is a Department of Tourism Government of Kerala. The Lake located is 300 meters away from the Bangalore - Calicut Highway. Another interesting lake in Wayanad is Karlad Lake. You can read more about Karlad lake here -
There is an entry fee of 20 rupees. You can walk around the place and see the beauty of the Lake and the premises. Interested people can also spend some time enjoying boat ride through the lake which is really a cheerful experience. This is one of the safest places to go boating in Wayanad.

Ulliyeri is a village in Kozhikode district in the state of Kerala, India. Ulliyeri is a town between Koyilandy and Balussery and also between Kuttiyadi and Kozhikode.
Wayanad to Vayalada View Point via Thamarassery Churam - Steps Together
In this attempt to explore Wayanad we are traveling to Manachery Viewpoint and the beautiful Vayalada Viewpoint via the ever-busy Thamarassery Churam.
Thamarassery Churam is a mountain pass in Kerala that connects Wayanad with Calicut. Churam is the Malayalam word for mountain pass.
Accidents in this ghat road are common even at present due to the heavy traffic and the reckless driving by many drivers.
This ghat road is about 14 kilometers in length, starting from Adivaram to Lakkidi View Point. It has nine hairpin bends.
Between 1700 and 1750, in search of a shorter route to transport the spices from Wayanad to Beypore Port, Kozhikode British found this route with the help of Karinthandan - a tribal chief from Wayanad.
After seeking help, the British shot Karinthandan dead.
It is also believed that Karinthandan's ghost haunted the travelers for a while until it was nailed to a tree by a wizard.
Manichery View Point is 26 km from Adivaram
and 45 km from Kozhikode (Calicut) Town
. Route from Adivaram to Manichery View Point goes through a narrow road with lush greenery on both sides and small villages on the way.
Unfortunately, when we reached Manichery, we were informed by locals that it was closed for the renovation.
Manichery View Point is 540m from sea level
. Our next destination, Vayalada viewpoint is just 5 kms from Manichery viewpoint and 38 km from Kozhikode (Calicut) Town.
Vayalada has a very poor public transport facility. It is better to travel by own vehicle.
Final moderate trekking of around 1.5 km from the parking to the viewpoint is surrounded by the lush greenery
Vayalada viewpoint is 600 m above sea level.
On a clear day, Vayalada viewpoint offers a beautiful view of Peruvannamoozhi reservoir and Heart island.

Mysore to Wayanad - Vythiri, Lakkidi viewpoint, Chain tree, Thamarassery Ghat and Kakanakote Forest
In this short video, we will showcase the Mysore to Wayanad driving experience and the places around Vythiri & Lakkidi. Let's explore Lakkidi viewpoint, Chain tree, Thamarassery Ghat and Kakanakote Forest together.
Mysore to Wayanad:
After visiting Kabini Dam and Backwaters, we headed towards Vythiri
of Waynad district in Kerala.
We took the below route to reach Vythiri
Kabini Backwaters - Kakanakote - Bavali - Kattikkulam - Kalpetta - Vythiri
Infinitely straight stretch of Rajiv Gandhi National Park is a bss to driving enthusiast and nature lovers.
Kakanakote Forest:
Kakanakote forest used to be hunting grounds for the Royal families and British officers in the pre-independence era.
This forest was very much famous for the 'Khedda', a method in which a large herd of elephants was captured by surrounding the herd with an enclosure of about 20-50 yards in diameter and 12 feet in height.
The Wildlife Protection Act (1972) outlawed the hunting of wild animals.
Today, the Kakanakote forest comes under the Rajiv Gandhi National Park and abounds with wildlife.
Reaching Vythiri:
Vythiri is 95 km from Kabini backwaters, and it takes around 3 hrs of driving to reach.
The Woodlands is a decent vegetarian food option in Kalpetta on the way.
Chain Tree:
Chain tree gets its name from the ghost of a local tribesman named Karinthandan, whose soul is said to be captured and tied to this tree using a chain. Karinthandan was said to be killed by a British officer for selfish motives during the 18th century. Since then numerous road accidents in the nearby ghat pass under mysterious circumstances are linked to the ghost of Karinthandan.
Over the years, as the tree has naturally grown tall, it said that the chain too has grown taller along with the tree mysteriously.
Thamarassery Ghat Pass & Lakkidi Viewpoint:
Lakkidi is often referred to as the ‘Gateway of Wayanad’.
It is about 2296 ft (700 m) above the sea level.
There are 9 hairpin curves from Lakkidi to downhill through steep mountains.
Lakkidi viewpoint offers beautiful views of the surrounding cliffs and valleys and the sneaking Ghat road known as the 'Thamarassery Ghat ' that connects Wayanad with Calicut.

Pookode Lake is a scenic freshwater lake in the Wayanad district in Kerala, South India. Pookode is a natural fresh water lake nestling amid evergreen forests and mountain slopes at an altitude of 770 meters above sea level. It is 15 km away from Kalpetta.
Panamaram, the rivulet which ultimately becomes Kabani River, originates from the Pookode lake. It is spread across an area of 8.5 hectares and with a maximum depth of 6.5 metres. Lying 3 km south of Vythiri town, the lake is one of the most popular tourist spots in Wayanad.
The lake has the shape of India's map. This perennial fresh water lake, nestled among wooded hills, is only one of its kinds in Kerala. Pethia pookodensis, is a species of cyprinid fish known to occur only in Pookode Lake. The lake has abundance of blue lotus and fresh water fishes. The forests surrounding the lake hold many wild animals, birds and flies.There are groups of Blue water lily flowers scattered here and there in the lake.
The lake is under the South Wayanad forest division and run by District Tourism promotion council. Boating facilities, children's park, handicrafts and spices emporium and fresh water aquarium are among the tourist attractions here.
