When it comes to AMAZING Small Towns, SALTSBURG PA is a Hidden TREASURE

Centralia PA

Small Town Tourist Merch:

#Saltsburg is a borough in Indiana County, #Pennsylvania, United States. Its location is in western Pennsylvania, in the southwestern corner of Indiana County near its border with Westmoreland County.

The town was based on the construction of salt wells and the canals and railroad tracks that passed through it. Its population was 780 at the 2020 census.

On June 20, 1769, William Gray conducted the first survey in the Saltsburg area. Early settlers of the wooded region were mainly Scots-Irish immigrants, migrating west between 1768 and 1795. The settlers did not colonize the area near the Kiskiminetas River until 1795 because of Native Americans defending their land.

The name 'Saltsburg' was adopted because of the salt grain that flourished in the area. Around the years 1795–1798, a Mrs. Deemer was the first settler to prove salt was present in the Conemaugh River, about one mile above Saltsburg's present site, in the town now known as Moween. Deemer produced a sample of salt by evaporating the water from the river.

In January 1817 the first sale of land was made to the Congregation of Saltsburg. In 1816-1817 Andrew Boggs purchased a large amount of land, which held the first town lots. The town was named with the common consent of the first settlers for the newly thriving salt industry. The town's religion was mainly Presbyterian, which was also the denomination of the first church built in Saltsburg. The first house was built in 1820 and now is occupied with the Presbyterian Church.

The town quickly filled with merchants in the late 1820s and became a prosperous place to reside. John Carson became the first tailor in 1827. Daniel Davis was the first blacksmith in 1828, and George Johnston was the first merchant in 1829. The population of the town continued to grow, and in 1838, the town was declared a borough. In 1840 the estimated population was 335.

The primary means of transportation in the area were on foot, carriage, train, or boat. The canal and railroad were major trade conduits for the town and the region. As the town grew it became a site for the passage of the mainline canal from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh. Coal and salt were transported along the canal and boat-building became one of the chief industries of the town. In 1835 and 1836, Robert Young, Butler Meyers, and Jacob Newhouse opened the first canal-boat construction business in the town. In 1855 the railroad bridge was built, with Major S.S. Jameson as the contractor and with the help of the principal mason John Marth. By 1864 the railroad brought an end to the canal era. The growth of the town was minimal until coalmines became prevalent in the 1870s.

Dr. John McFarland, a graduate of Jefferson Medical College, was the town's first physician; he came to Saltsburg in 1836. McFarland was also the director of the Indiana County Medical Society and an instructor at the Saltsburg Academy. He served in the state House of Representatives from 1845 to 1846 and became one of the first directors of the Northern Pennsylvania Railroad. The first school was a log house located closer to the trestlework or railroad bridge. John Whittlesey was the first teacher, and John Bucklin was the second. The Saltsburg Academy was established in 1852.

Saltsburg is located in the southwestern corner of Indiana County, Pennsylvania. It currently has an estimated population of 923. The borough maintains a police department with one police officer. Supplemental police protection is provided by the Pennsylvania State Police. Saltsburg also has a volunteer fire department (Station 131). There is an elementary school as well as a high school, located next to the Kiskiminetas River. The economy of Saltsburg is based on small restaurants, a few salons, a gas station, and a grocery store. The Rebecca B. Hadden Stone House Museum is located at 105 Point Street and has been standing since the days of the canal. The Saltsburg Area Historical Society retains information from the past of the town and the people and their ancestors of the area.

The Saltsburg Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Wilmington, North Carolina | Where to Eat | Best Restaurants | The Basics | Ceviche's | Indochine

We traveled to Wilmington, North Carolina’s port city and ate at The Basics, the Original Salt Works, Cheesesmith, Indochine, and Ceviche's. Wilmington provides the gateway to Cape Fear beaches such as Wrightsville, Kure, and Carolina. And with their own variety of attractions, boutiques and restaurants, it is easy to see why Wilmington was voted America’s Best Riverfront by USA Today. It is here that we ran in the enjoyable Wrightsville Beach Valentine 5K, where we found Jordan and Joella on the podium for finishing in the top 3 of their age class. We visited the nearby Shark Tooth Island, a small man-made feature accessible by kayak where explorers can find sea biscuits, a more plump version of sand dollars, pottery shards and, you guessed it, shark’s teeth.

CONTENTS
00:00 Intro Teaser
00:52 Map & Overview
02:32 The Basics
04:43 Original Salt Works
06:04 Cheesesmith
08:10 Indochine
11:21 Ceviche's

The Basics
The Basics is situated in historic downtown’s north end and serves up creative versions of traditional Southern dishes. They make everything from scratch and cook everything to order, but it is their creativity that keeps customers coming back for more. Their weekend brunch menu brings guests some new must-try dishes and makes this a premier brunch destination in Wilmington.

Salt Works
The Original Salt Works has been a local favorite for 50 years, serving up traditional breakfasts and lunches. Their homey location is small and they are cash-only, but their fresh ingredients, personal service, and spot-on execution make them a worthwhile choice. Whether you are wearing church clothes or a swimsuit, one visit and you will find why “regulars” keep coming back here for more.

Cheesesmith
Cheesesmith spent three years as a local food truck and now has gone brick-and-mortar in Wilmington’s buzzing Cargo District. As the name implies, this eatery specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches, creating chef-inspired versions of this traditional comfort food. Casual counter service is combined with craft beers and wines in a spot where this lunch outlet is sure to be a staple for many years.

Indochine
Indochine is Wilmington’s premier Asian restaurant serving up an extensive list of Thai-Vietnamese dishes in a fancy but fun setting with a vast array of outdoor gardens and dinner huts. Although their mass appeal has taken the edge off “Thai hot” and over-sweetened their cocktails, their “nutriceutical” emphasis is a welcomed theme, combining nutrition and health benefits to create a unique holistic dining experience.

Ceviche’s
Ceviche is a casual Panamanian restaurant with an emphasis on seafood and tropical cuisine as it serves up sustainable Latin-inspired fare and coastal-inspired cocktails. The food and decor communicate a vibe that is perfect for a foodie surfer. A featured restaurant on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives, Guy Fieri sank his teeth into the Ropa Vieja as well as the sancoho soup - a perfect sampling of the excellent dishes that Ceviche has to offer.

. USS North Carolina - The ship was undergoing a refit during the invasion of the Philippines but took part in the later stages of the Philippines campaign and was present when the fleet was damaged by Typhoon Cobra. She took part in offensive operations in support of the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa in 1945, including numerous attacks on Japan. Following the surrender of Japan in August, she carried American personnel home during Operation Magic Carpet. North Carolina operated briefly off the east coast of the United States in 1946 before being decommissioned the next year and placed in reserve. Stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in 1960, the ship was saved from the breaker's yard by a campaign to preserve the vessel as a museum ship in her namesake state. In 1962, the North Carolina museum was opened in Wilmington, North Carolina.

. Airlie Gardens is a 67-acre (27 ha) public garden in Wilmington, North Carolina. It was created in 1886 as a private garden for the Pembroke Jones family by Mrs. Jones. It was designed as a lush, flowing, naturalistic Southern garden, with thousands of azaleas, camellias, magnolias, palms, and wisteria. German landscape architect Rudolf Topel, transformed the garden to a picturesque garden. In 1999, it was purchased by New Hanover County. Landfall - Wilmington, NC

The community of Landfall in Wilmington, NC has been one of the Southeast’s premier communities for over 30 years. Ideally situated just one mile from Wrightsville Beach, this private, gated community – known for its world-class golf and tennis – has been considered the area's premier residential address since it was developed in the mid 1980’s.

The Landfall community spans 2,200 acres along the Intracoastal Waterway and Howe's Creek, boasting luxurious homes with stunning views of both Wrightsville Beach and the natural marshes that comprise 320 acres of conservation land. Other homes are nestled near the Country Club of Landfall and its two championship golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye. Nearly 30 miles of private roads wind around mature trees and immaculate landscaping, complementing an eclectic array of award-winning architecture.

Landfall residents may enjoy an endless array of amenities: three guarded, restricted access gates; 24-hour security patrolling the private roads; sidewalks surrounding the 10-acre Landfall Lake; tennis courts, a fitness facility; an Olympic-sized swimming pool; dedicated hiking trails; and a chapel, just to name a few.
Landfall is one of the only communities of its type on the East coast. Neither a transient community, nor a resort community, most of the property owners live in Landfall year-round, adding to the unique character and ambience of this idyllic private community.

If you would like to tour the community or receive information about homes for sale, contact a Landfall expert at Intracoastal Realty today.

Murrysville Community and Real Estate

Roughly 20 miles east of Pittsburgh along Route 22, just east of the dividing line between Westmoreland and Allegheny Counties, lies the bucolic borough of Murrysville.

Known for its parks, trails, and rolling hills, this suburb of Pittsburgh has so much to offer the people who live here.

For starters is the town's famous tree sign. In 1933, local Boy Scouts planted and cultivated trees to spell out the word Murrysville along a large hillside near the Monroeville/Murrysville border. For a time, this hillside held the world record for the largest arboreal sign. This town is also proud of its Community Park, which features a ballfield created for people with disabilities and hiking trails that wind through woods. The opportunity for all residents to enjoy the outdoors is important to this community. And with golf courses and a weekly farmer’s market, residents have plenty of ways to keep busy during the warmer months.

For lovers of the great indoors, Murrysville boasts many other desirable amenities as well, including a new commercial district with a wide assortment of shops and restaurants.

Murrysville real estate offers a similar degree of diversity. From well manicured homes built in the 70’s and 80’s to newer developments constructed within last 15 years, Murrysville has never stopped growing. The selections available range widely in price, making this town affordable for just about everyone who wishes to call it home. Could Murrysville's next new resident be you?

#walkingtour #CityWalks #virtualwalk #VisitWilmington #treadmillworkout #treadmillscenery #virtualtreadmill
In our second walking tours for treadmill exploring downtown Wilmington, NC, we head to the north, see the courthouse where Matlock was filmed, find a brewpub or two, make up to the convention center, Cape Fear community college, and find a mysterious old canal. I share a bunch more memories as we explore my old home town. I hope you enjoy this tour and please feel free to share your own thoughts and memories in the comments section. That's one of my favorite parts about running this channel. Oh, and also, if I forget to put something in the description that I said I would in the walk, please remind me. -H

My Story: I'm a filmmaker by trade. In 2016, we sold our house to go traveling for the year in Europe. Since I couldn't work there, I decided to start another Youtube Channel. I love walking as a way to explore and this was an easy thing to share. It got popular and I've continued. My goal is to share these treadmill travel videos to help your work out with virtual walks.

Wikipedia:
With a population of 115,451 at the time of the 2020 United States Census, it is the ninth most populous city in the state. Wilmington is the principal city of the Wilmington Metropolitan Statistical Area, a metropolitan area that includes New Hanover and Pender counties in southeastern North Carolina, which has a population of 263,429 as of the 2012 Census Estimate. The city was founded in the 1730s, and after going through a couple of different names (New Carthage, New London, Newton), its name became Wilmington in 1740. It was named after Spencer Compton, 1st Earl of Wilmington. Its historic downtown has a 1.75-mile (2.82 km) Riverwalk, developed as a tourist attraction in the late 20th century. In 2014, Wilmington's riverfront was ranked as the Best American Riverfront by readers of USA Today. The National Trust for Historic Preservation selected Wilmington as one of its 2008 Dozen Distinctive Destinations.

Towards the end of the 19th century, Wilmington was a majority-black, racially integrated prosperous city, and the largest city in North Carolina. In the Wilmington massacre of 1898, white supremacists launched a coup that overthrew the legitimately elected local Fusionist government. They expelled opposition black and white leaders from the city, destroyed the property and businesses of black citizens built up since the Civil War, including the only black newspaper in the city, and killed an estimated 60 to more than 300 people. This coincided with broader efforts of disenfranchisement at the state level. Whereas North Carolina had 125,000 registered black voters in 1896, it had 6,000 by 1902. By 1910, Charlotte overtook Wilmington as the state's largest city.

Wilmington is the home of EUE/Screen Gems Studios, the largest domestic television and movie production facility outside California. Dream Stage 10, the facility's newest sound stage, is the third largest in the United States. It houses the largest special-effects water tank in North America. After the studio's opening in 1984, Wilmington became a major center of American film and television production. Numerous movies in a range of genres and several television series have been produced here, including Iron Man 3, The Conjuring, The Crow, We're the Millers, Fox's Sleepy Hollow, One Tree Hill, Dawson's Creek, and NBC's Revolution.
