Tajikistan, Pamir Highway & Wakhan Valley. Motorbike Around the World - Episode 11

Riding in Tajikistan on the Pamir Highway and through the Wakhan Valley. Traveling motorbike around the world.

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT:

CHECK OUT THIS TRAVEL SERIES FROM THE START

EPISODE 11
The motorcycle adventure through the Pamir mountains of Tajikistan continues. After a night at Karakul Lake we head all the way back to Khoroch down the Pamir Highway where we take a left turn from the M41 Silk road into the Wakhan Valley. Again we're riding next to a wide river bordering Afghanistan. The road starts out a bit boring being tarmac, wide and when there is none lots of corrugations. We've been spoiled in the Bartang valley and I know it. Second half of the Wakhan is great, wild and at some point you could walk across to Afghanistan if you wanted to. Meet riders and cyclists along the way. In the evening reach the Pamir Highway again and start running out of fuel. Make it with the last drop to Alichur. Last ride through Murghab and past Karakul Lake again but this time straight to Kyrgyz. The sun is setting and those final moments in Tajikistan feel like something surreal. A special experience which I appreciated only more as time passed by. Already I started to think about time and unfortunately these were the final days of not thinking too much about time.

Enjoy this short motorcycle adventure documentary in Tajikistan. Put together with the video footage that I recorded back in 2014.

On the way there we would take a big detour through the Middle East, Central Asia and Mongolia. Little did I know back then that this would evolve into a years long motorcycle travel further taking me through Japan, Australia, New Zealand and the American continent.

KYRGYZSTAN to CHINA| Peak Lenin, Pamir Highway, Karakoram Highway & Kashgar // The Story of B - E15

In April 2019 I left Belgium and started a big motorcycle adventure around the world. My plan is: take no highways, ride off-road when possible, wild camp and stay with the locals as much as you can and try to rock climb in every country.
------------------------------------------------------------------
PAMIR HIGHWAY - TAJIKISTAN - Second highest highway in the world!

The Pamir Highway is not your regular Highway. This highway (if you can call it a highway) crosses Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan and has a length of over 1,200 km. It is the only continuous route through the difficult terrain of the Pamir mountains and is the main supply route.

It goes all the way up to a stunning 4655m, being the second highest highway in the world. Some parts are washed away from land slides and rain, flooded rivers, extreme potholes or heavy traffic.

PEAK LENIN - Winter in Summer

Going towards Peak Lenin base camp was quite an experience. I helped out two stranded locals with a broken motorcycle to eventually arrive at the base camp at about 4000m. there, I could enjoy an amazing view of the Peak Lenin and its surrounding glaciers and peaks. I made some dinner and prepared for a cold night. The next morning I was greeted with a thick layer of snow covering my tent and the whole landscape. This server as a fantastic photographies opportunity.

Chinese's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region

Going back down the valley I go to Sari Tash to prepare for the China crossing. I meet up with 12 other motorcycle riders since crossing China on your own is near impossible. The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous region is one of Chinese's most western cities. It's mainly a Muslim occupied region, which the Chinese don't really like, so they suppress them heavily: heavy security, restrictions and ridiculous laws. Consequently, the government doesn't really like tourists to wander around and observe what's happening. Therefore we needed to have a guide and follow a pre planned-itinerary.

KARAKORAM HIGHWAY - Highest Highway in the world

Leaving Kasghar, we start riding onto the Karakoram Highway, one of the most iconic and highest highways in the world, going all the way to the south of Pakistan, crossing several big rivers and high mountain passes.

Special thanks to Constantin for guitar jamming session in the video.

Enjoy,

map of Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan ; Turkmen: Türkmenistan, pronounced [tʏɾkmønʏˈθːɑːn]]), also known as Turkmenia, is a landlocked country in Central Asia, bordered by Kazakhstan to the northwest, Uzbekistan to the north, east and northeast, Afghanistan to the southeast, Iran to the south and southwest and the Caspian Sea to the west. Ashgabat is the capital and largest city of the country. The population of the country is about 6 million, the lowest of the Central Asian republics. Turkmenistan is one of the most sparsely populated nations in Asia. Citizens of Turkmenistan are known as Turkmenistanis (where citizenship and not ethnicity is emphasized), Turkmenians or Turkmens.

The area currently known as Turkmenistan has long served as a thoroughfare for many other nations and cultures. Merv is one of the oldest oasis-cities in Central Asia and was once the biggest city in the world. In medieval times, Merv was also one of the great cities of the Islamic world and an important stop on the Silk Road. Annexed by the Russian Empire in 1881, Turkmenistan later figured prominently in the anti-Bolshevik movement in Central Asia. In 1925, Turkmenistan became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union, the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic (Turkmen SSR); it became independent after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Turkmenistan possesses the world's fourth largest reserves of natural gas. Most of the country is covered by the Karakum or Black Sand Desert. From 1993 to 2017, citizens received government-provided electricity, water and natural gas free of charge.

Turkmenistan is currently an observer state in the Organisation of Turkic States, the Türksoy community and a member of the United Nations.

The country is widely criticized for its poor human rights. Notable issues were its treatment of minorities, press freedoms, and religious freedoms. After its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, the sovereign state of Turkmenistan has been ruled by two repressive totalitarian regimes. It was ruled by President for Life Saparmurat Niyazov (also known as Türkmenbaşy or Head of the Turkmens) until his death in 2006. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow became president in 2007 after winning a non-democratic election (he had been vice-president and then acting president previously). The use of the death penalty was formally abolished in the 2008 constitution. At 488,100 km2 (188,500 sq mi), Turkmenistan is the world's 52nd-largest country. It is slightly smaller than Spain and larger than Cameroon. It lies between latitudes 35° and 43° N, and longitudes 52° and 67° E. Over 80% of the country is covered by the Karakum Desert. The center of the country is dominated by the Turan Depression and the Karakum Desert. Topographically, Turkmenistan is bounded by the Ustyurt Plateau to the north, the Kopet Dag Range to the south, the Paropamyz Plateau, the Koytendag Range to the east, the Amu Darya Valley, and the Caspian Sea to the west. Turkmenistan includes three tectonic regions, the Epigersin platform region, the Alpine shrinkage region, and the Epiplatform orogenesis region.[92] The Alpine tectonic region is the epicenter of earthquakes in Turkmenistan. Strong earthquakes occurred in the Kopet Dag Range in 1869, 1893, 1895, 1929, 1948, and 1994. The city of Ashgabat and surrounding villages were largely destroyed by the 1948 earthquake.[92]

The Kopet Dag Range, along the southwestern border, reaches 2,912 metres (9,554 feet) at Kuh-e Rizeh (Mount Rizeh).[93]

The Great Balkhan Range in the west of the country (Balkan Province) and the Köýtendag Range on the southeastern border with Uzbekistan (Lebap Province) are the only other significant elevations. The Great Balkhan Range rises to 1,880 metres (6,170 ft) at Mount Arlan[94] and the highest summit in Turkmenistan is Ayrybaba in the Kugitangtau Range – 3,137 metres (10,292 ft).[95] The Kopet Dag mountain range forms most of the border between Turkmenistan and Iran.

Major rivers include the Amu Darya, the Murghab River, the Tejen River, and the Atrek (Etrek) River. Tributaries of the Atrek include the Sumbar River and Chandyr River. mapa de Turkmenistan , #turkmenistan

Bulunkul Village, Tajikistan

Windswept and bitterly cold Bulukan Village (Tajikistan) must be one of the loneliest villages on earth. Even in summer the kids’ faces are still dry and cracked from the winter cold!

Crossing a River into AFGHANISTAN? (TAJIKISTAN TRAVEL 2022)

Visit and take a trip to Tajikistan in Central Asia and travel to a former Soviet country full of high altitude mountain scenery, frozen lakes like Lake Karakul and Lake Iskanderkul and historic castles like Hisor Fort and the ruins of Yamchu. Watch as my friend and I take a road trip on Pamir Highway RIGHT across the river from Afghanistan.

A tour of Tajikistan is part of a classic 5 country tour of The Stans in Central Asia. We took a Tajikistan hokifay on a small group tour because the roads are treacherous and public transportation can be difficult. On tour we got to sleep in yurts and at homestays with locals. So Cool!

The Tajikistan landscape scenery is spectacular and the Tajik people and Tajik culture are an interesting mash-up of traditions from neighboring countries Kyrgyzstan, China, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. I especially enjoyed mixing it up with locals and kids in villages like Ptup and Karakul and tasting traditional Tajik food like plov.

Other places of interest include Khorog, Dushanbe (the capital), Langar, Murghab and Darvaz and beautiful Lake Bulunkul and Lake Yashilkul.
