Marlboro Township is a township in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The township is located within the Raritan Valley region and is a part of the New York Metropolitan Area.

Before World War II Marlboro Township was actually the nation's largest grower of potatoes and also known for a large tomato and egg industry. Following World War II, the state began to significantly build and improve the area transportation infrastructure. As the infrastructure improved, the population started to increase. The 50s and 60s saw Marlboro starting to significantly grow. Housing developments started to replace the farm and rural nature as the community expanded. After the early 1970s, Marlboro became a growing suburb for people working in New York and in large nearby corporations. The year 2000 saw continued growth of the housing trend toward larger homes. Towards the end of the decade, housing growth declined due to the Great Recession.

DRIVING IN THE RAIN IN WEST PHILLY FROM LANCASTER AVE TO COBBS CREEK - MOVE GROUPS OLD HOOD

We start towards the north side of West Philadelphia and head south, thru the bottom, then passing 52nd / 56th St and Market St Terminals.. We end our trip around the neighborhood once controlled by the MOVE group. Osage St was the sight of the MOVE Group Bombing that left 11 dead and 65 houses burned down and destroyed. Please read the story below.

The 1985 MOVE bombing refers to the May 13, 1985 incident in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, when the Philadelphia Police Department bombed a residential home occupied by the militant black anarcho-primitivist group MOVE, and the Philadelphia Fire Department let the subsequent fire burn out of control following a standoff and firefight. In 1985, Philadelphia Mayor Wilson Goode and police commissioner Gregore J. Sambor classified MOVE as a terrorist organization[1] and police obtained arrest warrants against MOVE members for various crimes. The standoff started after the Philadelphia police evacuated nearby houses and attempted to serve eviction notices and execute arrest warrants and an armed standoff ensued. Police used tear gas canisters on the building and MOVE members fired at them and a firefight followed.[2]

Incident
In 1981, MOVE relocated to a row house at 6221 Osage Avenue in the Cobbs Creek area of West Philadelphia. Neighbors complained to the city for years about trash around their building, confrontations with neighbors, and bullhorn announcements of sometimes obscene political messages by MOVE members.[5][6] The bullhorn was broken and inoperable for the three weeks prior to the police bombing of the row house.[6]

The police obtained arrest warrants in 1985 charging four MOVE occupants with crimes including parole violations, contempt of court, illegal possession of firearms, and making terrorist threats.[7] Mayor Wilson Goode and police commissioner Gregore J. Sambor classified MOVE as a terrorist organization.[1] Police evacuated residents of the area from the neighborhood prior to their action. Residents were told that they would be able to return to their homes after a twenty-four hour period.[8]

On Monday, May 13, 1985, nearly five hundred police officers, along with city manager Leo Brooks, arrived in force and attempted to clear the building and execute the arrest warrants.[8][1] Water and electricity were shut off in order to force MOVE members out of the house. Commissioner Sambor read a long speech addressed to MOVE members that started with, Attention MOVE: This is America. You have to abide by the laws of the United States. When the MOVE members did not respond, the police decided to forcibly remove the 13 members from the house,[8] which consisted of eight adults and five children.

There was an armed standoff with police,[9] who lobbed tear gas canisters at the building. The MOVE members fired at them, and a gunfight with semi-automatic and automatic firearms ensued.[10] Police used more than ten thousand rounds of ammunition before Commissioner Sambor ordered that the compound be bombed.[10] From a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter, Philadelphia Police Department Lt. Frank Powell proceeded to drop two one-pound (0.5 kg) bombs (which the police referred to as entry devices[1]) made of FBI-supplied Tovex, a dynamite substitute, targeting a fortified, bunker-like cubicle on the roof of the house.[5]

The ensuing fire killed eleven of the people in the house (John Africa, five other adults, and five children aged 7 to 13). The fire spread and eventually destroyed approximately sixty-five nearby houses. Although firefighters had earlier drenched the building prior to the bombing, after the fire broke out, officials said they feared that MOVE would shoot at the firefighters, so held them back.[5][10][11]

Goode later testified at a 1996 trial that he had ordered the fire to be put out after the bunker had burned. Sambor said he received the order, but the fire commissioner testified that he did not receive the order.[12] Ramona Africa, one of the two MOVE survivors from the house, said that police fired at those trying to escape.[13]

Eleven people in the house, including five children, died in the fire, and 65 homes in the neighborhood were destroyed.[3] One of the two MOVE survivors from the fire, claimed that police fired at those escaping the fire. The Philadelphia Commission found that the law enforcement and fire department actions were negligent, but no criminal charges were filed.

Trailside Nature & Science Center - Places to Visit in Union County with Kids

The Trailside Nature and Science Center is Union County’s environmental education center located in the Watchung Reservation in Mountainside/Summit. Not only does it offer multiple floors inside to see, touch and learn but there are also trails to hike and explore outside.

This nature center also includes a wonderful sensory trail that allows EVERYONE to learn about the environment around them.

The background music is a combination of nature sounds and my son playing the xylophone located on their sensory trail.
