Exploring Wilkes Barre takes us on a tour of my home city. The Wyoming Valley is at the heart of Pennsylvania where many cities lead back to Wilkes Barre. This was ground zero for anthracite coal, which was transported to almost every city in PA to build the foundations of the industrial age. In this tour we explore the best of Wilkes Barre on this foggy winter day and reflect on the many festivals of the diamond city, starting with the Public Square, then the River Commons, Kirby Park, the Stegmaier and Lions Head Brewery, and close our adventure in Seven Tubs Nature Area. Kingston is a borough in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located on the western bank of the Susquehanna River opposite Wilkes-Barre City. Kingston was first settled in the early 1770s; it was later incorporated as a borough in 1857. The Borough of Kingston lies within the Wyoming Valley of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Quick Tour of the Steamtown National Historic Site - Travel VLOG & Review (Scranton, PA)
Steamtown National Historic Site (NHS) is a railroad museum and heritage railroad located on 62.48 acres in downtown Scranton, Pennsylvania, at the site of the former Scranton yards of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad (DL&W). The museum is built around a working turntable and a roundhouse that are largely replications of the original DL&W facilities; the roundhouse, for example, was reconstructed from remnants of a 1932 structure. The site also features several original outbuildings dated between 1899 and 1902. All the buildings on the site are listed with the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad Yard-Dickson Manufacturing Co. Site.
Most of the steam locomotives and other railroad equipment at Steamtown NHS were originally collected by F. Nelson Blount, a millionaire seafood processor from New England. In 1964, Blount established a non-profit organization, the Steamtown Foundation, to operate Steamtown, U.S.A., a steam railroad museum and excursion business in Bellows Falls, Vermont. In 1984, the foundation moved Steamtown to Scranton, conceived of as urban redevelopment and funded in part by the city. But the museum failed to attract the expected 200,000 to 400,000 annual visitors, and within two years was facing bankruptcy.
In 1986, the U.S. House of Representatives, at the urging of Scranton native Representative Joseph M. McDade, approved $8 million to begin turning the museum into a National Historic Site.[6] The idea was derided by those who called the collection second-rate, the site's historical significance questionable, and the public funding no more than pork-barrel politics.[7][8] But proponents said the site and the collection were ideal representations of American industrial history.[9] By 1995, the National Park Service (NPS) had acquired Steamtown, USA, and improved its facilities at a total cost of $66 million.

Larksville, Pennsylvania, USA
Larksville is a borough in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is 2 miles (3 km) west of Wilkes Barre on the Susquehanna River (along U.S. Route 11). Larksville was formed from a section of Plymouth Township; it was incorporated as a borough on November 10, 1909. Once known as Blindtown, the community's name was changed to Larksville in honor of Peggy Lark, a former resident. The borough gained prominence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as an active anthracite coal mining community, drawing a large portion of its labor force from European immigrants. Larksville was a thriving mining town. Houses were clustered around the collieries. The collieries in the borough were Boston, Loree, Lance, Woodward, and Number 4. At its peak, in 1920, Larksville's population was well over 9,000 people. However, the mining industry in the region collapsed after the 1959 Knox Mine Disaster. The population began to dwindle after its demise. Today, the population is just over 4,000.
Scenic Pennsylvania - The Shades of Death Trail - Hickory Run State Park
The most popular trail in Hickory Run State Park, Shades of Death, is a gorgeous scenic trail following Sand Spring Creek and featuring small waterfalls, ponds, and a dense under story of Rhododendron. Although the trail is short and parallels route 534 for much of the way, it is packed with things to see and is in close proximity to the park campground, leading to it's popularity. The trail is rated as difficult due to the sometimes rocky, root filled, and precarious footing, but should be easily manageable for most healthy adults and children. On this particular January morning, a layer of snow and ice blanketed the forest floor making for slow going but providing a nice perspective on the creek, and the trees and plants beside it. Alfredo's Pizza Cafe (from The Office) Pizza Review
P I Z Z A... PIZZA! Go Pres, Go!
I stopped by Alfredo's Pizza Cafe in Scranton, PA of The Office fame on my cross-country drive. Looking back, I definitely scored a little high due to the fact that I had been eating nothing but fast food for like 3 days straight. No excuses though. The crust left the roof of my mouth all torn up the next day- too crunchy (listen to that crunch!). If possible, I would amend my score lower for the cheese coming off after and the crust. Still really good pizza. Shout out to Sandy from Along Came Polly for the greasy slice.
